  • 21、TOKYO—Lonely astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be getting a robot friend from Japan.

Japan's space agency is considering putting a talking humanoid(有人的特点的) robot on the ISS to watch the work while astronauts are asleep, monitor their health and stress levels and communicate to Earth through the microblogging site Twitter.

Japan's space agency JAXA announced this week that it is looking at a plan to send a humanoid robot to the space station in 2013 that could communicate with the ground through Twitter—primarily feeding photos, rather than original ideas —and provide astronauts with “comfort and companionship”.

Following up on US NASA's “Robonaut” R2 program, which is set for launch on the Discovery shuttle next week, the Japanese robot would be part of a larger effort to create and refine robots that can be used by the elderly, JAXA said in a statement.

Japan is one of the leading countries in robotics and has a rapidly aging society with one of the world's longest life expectancies.

Improving robot communication capabilities could help elderly people on Earth by providing a nonintrusive(无干扰的) means of monitoring the robot owner's health and vital signs and sending information to emergency responders if there is an abnormality, JAXA said.

“We are thinking in terms of a very humanlike robot that would have facial expressions and be able to talk with the astronauts,” said JAXA's Satoshi Sano.

The robot was being developed with the advertising and communications giant Dentsu Inc and a team at Tokyo University.

The NASA project has a humanlike head, hands and arms and uses the same tools as station crew members. The “Robonaut” called R2 is intended to carry out maintenance tasks in the station's Destiny lab.

NASA says it hopes that humanoid robots could one day stand in for astronauts during spacewalks or perform tasks too difficult or dangerous for humans.

For now, the $2.5 million NASA robot is limited to activities within the lab.

【1】 According to the passage, a humanoid robot, put on the ISS, shall carry out the tasks except ________.

    A. keep in contact with Earth

    B. get a friend for astronauts from Japan

    C. take care of the ISS sometimes

    D. keep an eye on the health of the astronauts

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?

    A. NASA is planning to communicate with the space station through Twitter.

    B. Japan has the largest number of elderly people.

    C. The robot program will eventually benefit the elderly.

    D. R2 program is in the charge of Japan's JAXA.

【3】From the passage we can know ________.

    A. robots could completely take the place of human astronauts in the future

    B. the robot program, having cost $2.5 million, can carry out all tasks

    C. many Japanese universities joined in the robot program

    D. future astronauts will become less lonely and more comfortable with the help of the robot

  • 22、The increased popularity of eating organic produce is driving interest in planting an organic garden. Those backyard gardens give peace of mind that our families are eating chemical-free vegetables. 【1】 our tips will ensure your success.

    Soil Amendments and Organic Matter

In order to get a healthy harvest, you need healthy organic garden soil. Soil consists of minerals, organic matter, water, and air. For a successful organic garden, the soil needs plenty of organic matter to improve the workability and structure. Organic matter helps break apart tightly packed clay particles, allowing water and air to move through the soil. 【2】

    Adding Earthworms

Another way to improve soil is to welcome earthworms. 【3】 Their tunneling keeps soil loose, and their production of nitrogen-rich excrement adds fertility. Earthworms flourish in an organic garden. Earthworms will make your organic plants smile from leaf to leaf and is one of your best organic gardening supplies.

    【4】

Practice a little bit of hand-weeding every day. Many gardeners find weeding to be relaxing and even therapeutic. Regular weeding keeps weeds small and prevents large ones from setting seeds, creating hundreds of new weed problems in your organic garden layout. Make sure you know what to actually pull by checking our Weed Identification Guide.

    Organic Garden Pest Control

【5】 Some act as tiny patrolling guards. The bad guys can strip your plants and still not be satisfied until they take all your neighbor’s plants, too. Diseases and even deer and rabbits can be considered pests. The easiest approach to pest control is to prevent problems from the start. Give plants the right organic soil, sun, and moisture. As you work in the garden, check for any sick-looking plants, and use a trusted source, such as a local university extension service, to identify the pest.

    A.Getting Rid of Weeds.

    B.Keeping from Regular Weeding.

    C.They are a gardener’s best friends.

D.Some bugs are good; others are not so good.

E.Given that gardening techniques are considered quite essential now,

F.Although there are some challenges associated with organic gardening,

G.It also improves sandy soil, enabling it to better retain water and nutrients.

  • 23、   Nowadays, cars are playing an increasingly important role in daily life and many societies would stop functioning without them. So, the claim that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe. But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by governments but also by car manufacturers.

The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. The team there believes that by 2040 all cars will be computerized, which will mean extremely large fuel savings, no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself and it will not be owned by one individual. Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.

According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air and caused more deaths turn both world wars put together.

Davis says cars will be fitted with intelligent cruise control devices to regulate the distance between one car and another. Brakes and accelerators will become redundant (多余的) because the car will automatically speed up or slow down to match the speed of the car in front. Computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people so that the roads can be made the best of.

By 2030 Dr. David Davis believes car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road whatever the weather conditions by projecting an image of the road ahead onto the car’s windscreen. And by 2040 cars will travel in convoy linked to each other electronically. Cars will be connected by an electronic tow (牵引) bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the ordinary fuel” says Davis. “But all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”

1We learn from the passage that governments and car manufactures_____________.

A.don’t believe the prediction that no one will own cars by 2020

B.are devoted to the technological innovation in car industry

C.consider the predictions made by the researchers seriously

D.have put the super-intelligent car into mass production

2Which of the following will NOT be the characteristics of the cars of 2040?

A.There will be no brake and accelerator in cars.

B.We will own as many cars as we want.

C.All cars will be driven by computers.

D.Car accident will no longer happen.

3Davis believes that the present car culture will change because_____________.

A.cars play an important role in daily life

B.many societies would stop working without cars

C.cars should not be owned by one individual

D.it causes more and more pain to human society

4Which of the following sentences can explain better use of roads by 2040 mentioned in the passage?

A.Computer-driven cars can drive much closer together than cars driven by people

B.Motorists can have a clear view of the road whatever the weather conditions are.

C.We can change our own cars as frequently as possible

D.Intelligent cruise control devices can regulate the distance between one car and another.

5The underlined phrase "in convoy" in the last paragraph probably means_____________.

A.in group B.on road C.side by side D.one by one

6What will happen if cars are linked to each other electronically in 2040?

A.Cars will slow down to match the speed of the cars in front.

B.The weather conditions won't have effect on motorists.

C.There will be a decrease in the pollution caused by car.

D.All trains will burn less fuel than present

  • 24、With researchers suggesting that sitting is the new smoking, sit-stand desks (SSD) have become a common tool to interrupt long sitting in an office or classroom environment. As this furniture becomes popular, conflicting opinions have arisen on whether they can work as successfully as they are intended. Dr. April Chambers from the University of Pittsburgh worked with teammates to gather data from 3 studies and published a review article listing present information on the benefits of SSDs.

“There has been a great deal of scientific research about sit-stand desks in the past few years, but we have only scratched the surface of this topic,” said Chambers. I want to gather what we’ve known so far to figure out how we can use these desks to better benefit people in the workplace.

This work was done with Dr. Nancy A. Baker from Tufts University. The review examines the effects of a sit-stand desk in the following aspects: behavior, physiological(生理的), work performance, psychological, discomfort, and posture. Their work showed that using an SSD effectively got participants to sit less and stand more and that the device made users more comfortable at work. However, many frustrations (沮丧) with SSDs came from the physiological outcomes. According to the review, physiological effects were the most studied, but there were no significant results with regards to fatness.

There are many considerations about using an SSD most effectively, such as desk height, monitor height, and the amount of time to stand. Chambers believes that the overall arrangement of the workplace or study place and the amount of work are two factors that should be further studied.

Chambers noted that present research is limited because many of the studies were done with young and healthy subjects who were asked to use the desk for a week or a month at most. Since some of the significant benefits are with heart health or muscle discomfort, it may be beneficial to perform additional studies with middle-aged or overweight workers.

【1】The arguments about SSDs mainly lie in .

    A.their side effects

    B.their popularity

    C.their practical results

    D.their original intentions

【2】Why did Chambers publish the article?

A.To call on people to stand more.

B.To suggest ways to better use SSDs.

    C.To contradict the existing opinions.

D.To find out the drawbacks of SSDs.

【3】What’s the researchers’ attitude to SSDs’ physiological result?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Content.

    C.Positive.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What needs to be further examined according to Chambers?

A.The height of the desk and the monitor.

B.The time people spend in standing.

    C.Behavior and psychological aspects.

D.A broader range of the participants.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Break was almost over. Normally, I didn’t bother to keep track of Michael Peterson. I tried to ignore him. But today was Valentine’s Day, a special day for children to exchange “valentine cards” with each of their classmates. No way was I going to let him play a mean trick today.

Michael Peterson sits next to me in class. He’s also my neighbor. So I know him. And I was sure he was up to something, because he always is. Last week, he put a sign on my back that said Sing to Me! It was terrible. Sure, maybe it was funny at first, if a little confusing. Everywhere I went, people I didn’t even know started singing to me. But once I realized it was just because of the sign on my back, I was extremely angry. Michael played tricks like that all the time. So I knew what he was doing now — ruining someone’s Valentine’s Day.

I was going to stop him. But where was he? He wasn’t on the playground for break as supposed to be. “Have you seen Michael?” I asked Josh, who swung down from the monkey bars and said, “Which Michael?”

“Michael Peterson,” I said. I had forgotten about Michael Rogers, the new kid in our class.

Josh shrugged. “Haven’t seen him.” Then he grinned. “He’s probably off playing a funny trick.”

I sighed. “That’s what I’m afraid of.” I headed for the classroom. There was Michael Peterson — at Michael Rogers’ desk, digging in his box of valentine cards! “Michael, leave that box alone!” I ordered.

“Hurry and help me,” Michael said.

I stared at him in amazement. He wanted me to help him? “No way!” I said, thinking that he was stealing valentine cards from Michael Rogers’ box. Then, after watching him for a moment, I added, “What are you doing, anyway?”
