21、American football was the fastest-growing sport for US young players last year, according to a survey sponsored by the sport's governing body.
But it was the game's no tackle variety that showed the biggest increase-a finding that may reflect concerns about injury. In American football, a tackle (抢断球) refers to an attempt to stop an opponent by forcing them to the ground.
The number of participants in football grew in 2015 while most other sport, except baseball, posted a decline, USA Football said on Monday, citing(引用) the findings of a survey of 30,000 children and teenagers.
Participation in flag football (a no-tackle type of football) increased by 8.7 percent among children aged 6 to 14, while tackle football rose by 1.9 percent. For that age group, the only other sport that grew was baseball, with a 3. 3 percent increase.
In the 15-to-18 age group, flag football rose by 10. 5 percent, while tackle grew by 2.5 percent.
Basketball was the third, with a 1. 1 percent increase. Participation in all other sports declined.
Tom Farrey, executive director of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program, said he was surprised that flag football participation rose so much.
“The trend suggests that parents are marching to the beat of a different drummer, in pursuing flag as an alternative for their kids," he said.
The findings come at a time of increasing concern about the risk associated with youth sports, particularly hockey (曲棍球) and football, where medical researchers have warned about the risk of concussions (damages to the brain caused by violent blows to the head) and death linked to brain injury.
USA Football, an Indianapolis, Indiana based nonprofit funded in part by the National Football League, believed that the increases resulted from better safety and health education.
"Football participation increases, even modest increases, may signal that programs such as our Heads Up Football program and practice guidelines are making a positive difference," said Scot Hallenbeck, USA Football chief executive, in a statement.
Robert Cantu, a Boston University neurosurgery professor and investigator at the school's chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center said the increase in fag football participation signaled that more parents were directing children to a safe alternative

22、They had to get many people out of the burning building as quickly as they could. So they told them to jump out of the window.
The first one out of the window was a man. He was followed by his two children. Next, a baby and then the baby’s mother came flying out of the third-storeyed window, all driven by desperation and the smoke that was coming from the apartment. Brian Smith and Corey Boykin helped them all. “We caught everything that came out of the window”. Smith said.
A fire started on the second floor. “I got my family out,” said Smith. “Then I started banging on doors on the first floor. I tried getting to the second floor, but the smoke was too black. I couldn’t see; I couldn’t breathe. So I turned around and came outside. That’s when I saw people hanging out of the window.”
Boykin was at his friend Melanie Nunemaker’s house, across the street from the apartment. He knew something was wrong when he saw a baby drop out of the window. Catching the child below was Smith.
Boykin ran to a nearby house to get a ladder and rushed back to help. He found Smith with his arms outstretched, shouting, “Jump! I get you.” He caught several people.
Boykin climbed the ladder to warn people on the third floor to turn around and come toward him because they couldn’t see through the smoke.
And he wasn’t finished. When Boykin saw his burnt-out neighbors, he took 20 of them back to Nunemaker’s house. “They gave us clothes, shoes, whatever they had —and we didn’t,” one of the neighbors Chase Ray said, “They saved us.”

23、Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive(积极的) feelings may reduce (减少) the danger of illness,” said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen's interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day. After the two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The result showed that everyone in the study was equally(相等地) likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

A. People talked about their feelings every day.

24、With a growing number of people in San Francisco choosing not to own a car, German car-making company BMW has decided to branch out into car-sharing services with 70 cars spread around the city, first in 14 locations, with a further 100 being added gradually.
“This is not an A-to-A service — it is A-to-B,” says Richard Steinberg, chief executive of the DriveNow scheme (方案), pointing out that members can pick up a car downtown for the half-hour drive to the airport for only $12, compared with about $40-50 for a taxi.
Whether that is possible in real life depends on traffic, of course. A midmorning drive from Union Square down Highway 101 to the airport takes just 22 minutes; however, driving back during the rush hour takes twice as long.
Most of the cars that are stuck in San Francisco’s traffic jams are giving off all sorts of harmful gas. But not DriveNow’s BMW ActiveE cars.
“All the cars in San Francisco are electric,” Mr. Steinberg says.
In San Francisco, handing back the car to DriveNow is easy — just pick one of its drop-off points, park and walk away. There are no forms to fill in, no time-consuming rules.
Several other carmakers and other players within the motor industry are experimenting with similar schemes, for example Daimler’s Car2go scheme, which is operated in many cities around the world.
“We picture a future where car-sharing members outnumber car owners in big cities around the world,” says Car2go spokesman Andreas Leo.
Franck Leveque, from company Frost & Sullivan, agrees.
“Car sharing is growing at a pace we have not seen before,” he says. “By 2020 we believe there will be 15 million members of car-sharing schemes in Europe alone, with 140,000 vehicles in operation.”
