22、We use a huge amount of single-use plastic each year-we buy one million plastic bottles each minute around the world.Plastic waste,a material that can take centuries or more to disappear, is causing great damage to the planet. However, plastic waste produced in many countries typically ends up in open, uncontrolled landfills(垃圾填埋池),most of which finally enters the ocean either by wind or through waterways.
Now,Nzambi Matee,a 29-year-old woman from Nairobi,Kenya,is dealing with this global, crisis by recycling bags, containers, and other waste products into bricks(砖头)used for construction projects. Before founding her company -Gjenge Makers,Matee worked as an oil-industry engineer. After seeing plastic waste along Nairobi's streets, she decided to quit her job and built a small lab, testing sand and plastic combinations(结合)Matee managed to study in the materials lab at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she in the end developed a machine that produces the new bricks.
Made from a combination of plastic and sand, the bricks have a melting point higher than 350℃ and can be used for a longer time than traditional bricks. Matee and her team gain much of the raw product from factories and recyclers, and sometimes it's free, which allows the company to reduce the price point on the product and make it more affordable for schools and homeowners.
“There is waste that recyclers cannot deal with anymore. That is what we get,”Matee said. Her factory produces 1,500 bricks each day, made from a mix of different kinds of plastic. These are polyethylene(聚乙烯)used for milk bottles, sandwich bags, and ropes. But she does not work with polyethylene terephthalate or PET,commonly used for plastic bottles, which can be made into the same form easily again and again.
The plastic waste is mixed with sand, heated and then pressed into bricks, which are sold at different prices, depending on thickness and colour.

24、 We'd all like to believe that career success is strictly a result of talent, drive, and skill set. But have you ever wondered whether factors unrelated to your work performance, such as personal appearance, influence your chances for advancement?
We have — and to find answers to this question, career-intelligence.com sought the opinions and advice of a number of workplace experts, as well as women themselves in various industries. Do looks affect getting hired, getting promoted, and making more money? And if so, what can you do about it?
Now let's see what's behind the Scenes.
Research gives us a few clues into how a woman's appearance may influence her advancement ability. A study conducted by NYU sociologist Dalton Conley and NYU graduate student Rebecca Glauber found that women's weight gain results in a decrease in both their income level and job prestige. By contrast, men experience no such negative effects.
A more recent study designed and executed by researchers at Harvard University, Boston University, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that women wearing more makeup were judged to be more competent than those wearing less makeup or no makeup. Makeup was found to increase people's perceptions of a woman's likability and trustworthiness as well.
Despite these research implications, many are reluctant to admit that a woman's personal appearance influences decisions around hiring and promotion, according to Steve Stroum, president of Venmark International. Stroum explains a key reason for this is that personal appearance falls into the subliminal(下意识的)judgment part of the brain. He compares the situation to the automotive industry placing bright red convertibles(敞篷车)in their showrooms, only to sell white cars. "In the same sense, a woman's personal appearance is a hidden persuader, says Stroum. "Nobody will admit that something as trivial will impact their decision-making process... but it does.”
Marc L. Resnick, Ph.D., professor of human factors at Bentley University College of Business, reinforces this position. "My research finds that when making decisions, people are influenced by a variety of factors that are explicitly conscious and unconscious," says Resnick. "So even for a hiring manager that knows of this tendency and forces him/herself to suppress it, it is still an influence."
【1】According to the studies, what kind of women could get more advancement?
A.Women with more weight.
B.Women wearing makeup.
C.Women having convertibles.
D.Women with talents.
【2】Why do many people deny that a woman's personal appearance influences her career?
A.Because it is irrelevant to her career.
B.Because it is too superficial.
C.Because it is the subconscious part in the brain.
D.Because it can arouse women's jealous emotion.
【3】What does explicitly in the passage mean?
A.clearly
B.indirectly
C.extensively
D.ambiguously
【4】What is the main topic of the passage?
A.Whether people's personal appearance influences their job career.
B.Whether people's consciousness influences making a decision.
C.Whether colors influences automotive industry.
D.Whether people's talent influence their promotion.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once upon a time, there lived a young man who wished he could support himself. While exploring what business he would take on, he met a very well-traveled man. The man told the young man great tales of his travel, and then he talked about a country that had no onions.
Without any further thoughts, he bought onions, filled his cart and set his journey towards this wildly fantastic land without onions. Finally, after several days he arrived in the onion-less country. “I bring you a great gift from my country,” the young man proudly announced. “The plant is native to my place but new to yours. It has the unique ability to improve the flavor (滋味) of any food. It would be great if I could offer you this magic plant which you, in turn, introduce to your people.” The emperor was a little cautious about letting the strange plant in at first, but he later allowed the young man to prepare some foods using the onions.
The young man used all his skills to prepare the feast using the onions. All the empire’s ministers, the nobility and senior officials were invited to the dinner that night. After the young man did the initial tasting, the feast began. Then, everyone in the room started eating the food. It didn’t take long for the hall to get into a great noise of excitement. All praised the smell and the taste of the food. The emperor thanked the young man a lot, demanded all of the onions, and paid him its weight in gold.
On his journey back home, the young man met a trader. For hours that night, the young man told what he had seen in that faraway land, where gold was worth less than onions. He also told the trader that he learned that the country did not have garlic (大蒜). The trader was excited.
