二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Competition is all around us. It’s responsible for bringing the best out of people and enabling us to survive a fast-paced world. 【1】Sometimes we see young boys crying because their teams lost in inter-school tournaments. Sometimes we find young teenagers lie and cheat just to win. 【2】So it’s important to develop healthy competition in children.

When it comes to encouraging healthy competition in kids, the first thing to do is set goals for them to work towards. 【3】If you burden them with too high a goal they can’t achieve, they’ll lose confidence.

In addition, children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media. 【4】Sportsmanship and team spirit will help them grow into sound human beings who aren’t easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories. They may also dislike cheating or lying. So give the examples where one of the family members refused to cheat to win.

【5】After they take an exam, don’t ask about how much they expect to score; instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a basketball match at school, don’t ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many scores he got and encourage him to score higher next time.

A.You mustn’t push them too hard.

B.These are all effects of unhealthy competition.

C.It makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker.

D.However, children can be worst hit by competition.

E.Sending your children the right signals in life is also important.

F.Therefore, it’s up to you to develop in them, the right kind of spirit.

G.Let your kids know that you’re more interested in how they performed.

  • 23、A newspaper, a publication usually issued on a daily or weekly basis, has the main function of reporting news. Many newspapers also furnish their readers with other pieces of useful information, such as weather reports, television schedules, and stock prices. They provide commentary (评论) on politics, economics, and arts and culture. In nearly all cases and in varying degrees, newspapers depend on commercial advertising for their income.

Newspaper publishers estimate that nearly six out of ten adults in the United States and Canada read a newspaper every day, and seven out of ten read a paper each weekend. By the time they see a newspaper; most people have already heard about breaking news stories on television or on the radio. Readers rely on newspapers to provide detailed background information and analysis (分析) which television and radio rarely offer. Newspapers not only inform readers that an event has happened but also help readers understand what led to the event and how it will affect the world.

The staff of a large newspaper works under the constant pressure of deadlines to bring news to readers as quickly as their minds, bodies and the technology they use permit. Reporters, photographers, artists, and editors compile (编写) articles and graphics — sometimes in just a few hours. Page designers combine articles, photos, advertisements, and eye-catching headlines into page layouts (版面), then rush their work to the printer. Printing technicians may work through the night operating printing presses that can print out more than 60,000 copies per hour.

  • 24、   At first, the scientists wondered whether it was a mistake. Just 21 days after leaving the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, an arctic fox had arrived in Greenland. And in less than three months, it made it to Canada.

The fox averaged nearly 30 miles a day- some days, though, it walked almost 100 miles. “When it started happening, we thought 'is this really true?” said Arnaud Tarroux, one of the researchers who tracked the female fox “Was there an deviation in the data?” The scientists found the data was real as the fox kept going. The creature's travels last year, recorded in a recent paper, surprised Tarroux and his fellow Norwegian researcher Eva Fuglei, even though the animal is known for its endurance and ability to survive in extreme polar areas.

Scientists already knew that some of the foxes, native to Arctic areas all around the Northern Hemisphere, made long journeys, but the fox these researchers followed stood out for just how fast it covered more than 2,700 miles. “We didn't really know how they would do that and how long it would take for an individual to do this kind of trip,” Tarroux said.

The coastal fox the researchers tracked, also known as a blue fox, landed in Ellesmere Island in Canada on 1 July 2018. Of the 50 or 60 animals the scientists put trackers on for a study, it was the only one that dared to go outside of Norway. The researchers found the fox set off because of a food shortage. The tracker stopped working in February, so researchers no longer know the fox's location, but it was last discovered on the same Canadian island in the area of Nunavut.

1How many miles can the arctic fox travel in a single day at most?

    A.Less than 40 kilometers. B.Less than 50 miles.

    C.Almost 100 miles. D.Almost 180 miles.

2What does the underlined word “deviation” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Proof. B.Joke. C.Mistake. D.Task.

3Where was the fox after leaving Norwegian island for 3 months?

    A.In Canada. B.In Greenland. C.In Arctic areas. D.In Spitsbergen.

4What can we infer from the text?

A.The fox travelled exactly 2,700 miles. B.50 or so foxes are outside Norway.

C.The fox landed in Canada last year. D.The fox traveled because of food.
