Saturday, 17th March Today I got my dream job in New York! However, it’s far away from my home town and I’ve never visited New York before. Yesterday I took the train here and one of my workmates met me at the railway station. Then he showed me to the company. There they had a welcome party for me. Great! My company offered no living place, so I had to find somewhere to live. I stayed in a hotel while I looked for a new home. | Sunday, 1st April I’ve found the perfect flat! It’s small but very nice. It’s near my office, so I can walk to work. The only problem is that it’s $1,000 a month. That’s too much for a young man like me! I’ve soon got used to the life here. I love it! There’s a supermarket nearby and some restaurants I can go to when I do not want to cook. My workmates and new neighbours are friendly. It’s April Fool’s Day today and I even played a trick on my neighbors next door. Cool! |

22、Underwater travel is difficult and dangerous, but many people have to stay deep under the ocean. Thus, humans have come up with a few designs of vehicles to move around under the ocean. But what if there was a better way to travel?
Hilary Bart-Smith, an engineer at the University of Virginia, thinks a vehicle that travels like a manta ray (魔鬼鱼) would be able to operate for long periods at sea. Manta rays which can grow up to 29 feet long are among the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Different from animals and people pushing against water, manta rays swim by moving through the water with wing-like movements of their fins (鳍). Efficiency means using less energy to move farther.
Bart-Smith and other engineers at the University of Virginia had to find out what manta rays looked like on the inside to better understand how they move. They took X-rays to find out how a manta ray’s fins are built. They found that a web of cartilage (软骨) stretches across each fin.
Once the engineers knew how a manta ray’s fin was constructed, they could build one of their own. They made a long row of metal struts with many hinges to imitate the manta ray’s web of cartilage. The engineers put their design inside a flexible cover, shaped like a manta ray’s fin. Then they tested it in the university swimming pool. They were happy to see that it swam just like a manta ray in the ocean.
Engineers and scientists are still learning and experimenting with how to imitate these amazing animals. For now, engineers study their movements and learn from the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Perhaps someday engineers will be able to build manta ray robots that are big enough to transport people.

23、When Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico, most of the island’s buildings and homes were destroyed. When hurricanes left, much of the area was in ruins. Meital Sternthal, a sixth-grader who comes from a village in Israel, decided to help.
Meital and her parents came up with the idea to sell her things and raise money to help the rescue team on the Caribbean islands provide safe water to the communities affected by the hurricane. She started a fundraising (筹款)page and gave her business a name: Puerto Tiko, since the word “tik” means “bag” in the local language.
So with her parents’ support, Meital took to her sewing machine(缝纫机). It’s a hobby she’s had for the past three years, when she started taking sewing classes. Now, she’s using it for something bigger, something she hopes will help a lot of people. So far she has raised 70 percent of her $4,000 goal by making and selling handbags and given it to charity(慈善机构)
“When I heard about the hurricanes, at first I thought about getting in contact with artists there and delivering the bags there, so they can sell them,” the shy girl said. “But then we realized it would be too hard and they might not be able to get it. ”
Meital spoke to the volunteers there who promised her the money would be used to make sure those people get clean, safe drinking water.
【1】What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To stress the power of a hurricane.
B.To tell of the background of the story.

A.Delivering handbags there.
B.Serving as a volunteer.
C.Giving her money to charity.
D.Calling on local artists to help.

B.She wanted to earn money.
C.She dreamed of being a designer.
D.She hoped to help those in need.
【4】Which word can be used to describe Meital?
A.Honest.

24、Have you ever wanted to see your dreams after you woke up? Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may help you do this in the near future!
Researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system to recreate images in people’s heads. The pictures AI has created include a teddy bear, an airplane and a clock tower. The technology is 80 percent accurate, reported Science magazine.
Previously there have been AI models that can turn a word or phrase into images. The AI has studied lots of images and their text descriptions. Over time, the AI can find patterns and recreate pictures if you first input text.
This time, the researchers took a step further. They trained the AI to link people’s brain scan data with images. They asked four people to look at 10, 000 different images, and let the AI find patterns of blood flow in the brain. Then the patterns can be related to the images.
If people looked at an airplane, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very cloudy airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text - to - image” model. By feeding the keyword “airplane”, the AI would improve the image and make it more real.
“It’s a new method that combines textual and visual information to ‘decipher the brain’”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University told Science magazine.
Researchers said the technology could someday help people with paralysis to communicate. It might also help scientists understand dreams or even how other animals see the world.
【1】What do we know about the AI system mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.It can help train people’s minds.
B.It can fully present people’s dreams.
C.It was created for drawing people’s heads.
D.It can recreate pictures in people’s heads.
【2】How did the previous AI models turn phrases into images?
A.By understanding the meaning of the words.
B.By finding patterns in images and their text descriptions.
C.By drawing pictures according to users’ orders.
D.By finding different photos from the internet.
【3】What is the working process of the new AI system?
A.relate with image→scan blood flow→improve the text→turn into the image
B.relate with image→turn into text→scan blood flow→improve the image
C.scan blood flow→relate with image→turn into text→improve the image
D.scan blood flow→turn into text→relate with image→improve the image
【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How to know the way animals see the world.
B.How people with paralysis talk with others.

D.How AI technology affects people’s dreams,
【5】Which part of a newspaper may this text appear?
