  • 21、   We take most of our photos when we travel, but teens from Massachusetts, US, took photos of every corner of their own communities(社区). And they found things they didn’t know before. It’s part of a program to ask teenagers to care about the safety of their communities. They took photos and found problems.

“I found I was a photographer and I wanted to show people what I saw,” said Faith Blass, 15. Blass found some leaves with holes burned by cigarettes on a street, which expresses a possible smoking problem among teenagers.

“Even though I’ve lived in Somerville, from this program I got to see a new side of the town,” said Judcine Felix, 16. “I saw it more carefully and saw things I hadn’t seen before.”

Felix took pictures of broken benches and a broken light bulb (灯泡) in the areas where she used to live. She said she was surprised to see how bad the area is, compared with where she lives now.

More than 400 photos are on show in a city hall. One police officer said the photos were wonderful and caught people's attention.

“This project taught us to read between the lines. Everything is not simply what it seems,” Blass said. She said that the project is more than just adults getting children to do things, instead, it gave them a voice and taught them responsibility (责任).

  • 22、California burns every year. But among a record-breaking heatwave, 2020 was the worst burning year yet. As of the September 2020, more than 7, 600 fires burned over 2. 5m acres of land. The season ran for more than several months.

That fits a long term trend, for California's wild fires are getting steadily worse. Large fires in the 2010s burned 6. 8m acres on average, up from 3.3m acres in the 1990s. The fire season in 2020 lasted nearly three months longer than it did in the 1970s. Over the past decade, the state has spent an average of $ 3.7bn a year fighting fires. Add the cost of rebuilding, treating victims and restoration, and that is perhaps a tenth of the total cost.

The reason is a double blow of climate change and development. More homes are being built next to forests, in what experts call the “wild-land-urban interface” (WUI). A 2018 study estimated that roughly a third of American homes were in the WUI. Pricey housing has pushed people in California onto cheaper land close to the wilderness. At the same time, climate change is lengthening the dry season, which stores up fuel for fires. In California, a “huge drought”—in which dry years become more common and wet ones scarcer(稀少)—is making matters even worse.

Since neither trend shows much sign of turning around, people on America's west coast will have to learn to co- exist with more and more frequent fires. “It's not that different to building on an earthquake active region,” says Max Moritz, a wildfire expert at the University of California at: Santa Barbara. He suggests that houses should be built near water or open agricultural lands, which can offer a useful barrier.

【1】How does the second paragraph develop?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By analyzing causes.

    C.By listing figures.

    D.By following time order.

【2】Why are more houses being built next to forests?

A.People can get closer to nature.

    B.California advocates forest development.

C.Low-income people can't afford urban houses.

D.Climate change has made the dry season longer.

    【3】What does Max Moritz imply?

A.Life is hopeless for people on America's west coast.

B.Great potential danger goes with the houses in WUI.

C.Wildfire experts should study where to build houses.

D.People should live away from earthquake active regions.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A.To instruct.

    B.To warn.

    C.To persuade.

    D.To inform.

  • 23、   Your homework habits might be affecting your grades. 1 However, you can change the way you feel by taking better care of your mind and your body.

    Use a planner.

Do you know that poor organization skills can reduce your final scores by a whole letter grade? 2 Who can afford to score a big fat “0” on a paper, just because we get lazy and don’t pay attention to the due date? Nobody wants to get an “F” because of forgetfulness.

    Communicate with parents.

It sounds simple enough, but students don’t always realize how much parents can stress out about this. 3 Whenever parents see a small sign of potential failure, they may be afraid of its potential to become a big failure.

    4

Studies show that teens’ natural sleep patterns are different from those of adults. This often causes them to have trouble going to sleep at night, and have trouble waking up in the mornings. You can avoid some of the problems by changing some of your night time habits.

    Improve your memory.

A great way to improve homework habits is to improve your memory with brain exercise. 5 Ancient accounts show that early Greek orators used the “loci” method of remembering long speeches. You may be able to use this method to enhance your memory at test time.

    A. Get the sleep that you need.

    B. Parents are concerned about your success.

    C. Never sleep later than your parents at night.

    D. There are many ideas about improving memories.

    E. You may feel bored when it comes to homework time.

    F. Students often do their homework late at night every day.

    G. That’s why you should learn how to use a day planner the right way.

  • 24、   The United States’ job market has millions of unfilled jobs. Many of those jobs require technical skills. However, employers say many of those jobs are vacant because they cannot find people with the right skills. Labor experts call this paradox the skills gap. A number of efforts have been launched to better understand and solve it.

Nicholas Wyman wrote a book called, “Job U: How to Find Wealth and Success by Developing the Skills Companies Actually Need.” He calls the skills gap, “a labor market mismatch — people without jobs and jobs without people.”

In the United States, the cost of a traditional four-year college can be very high. U.S. colleges and universities produce many graduates every year. Yet unemployment rates among new graduates are high.

Nicholas Wyman says a combination of technical classes and on-the-job training — an apprenticeship (学徒) — would be a better choice for many people. He notes that, “An apprenticeship is where you learn from a specialist, you are provided guidance and you learn in an on-the-job environment. It is vital to get technical skills that are of immediate value to an employer. And it is important to get transferrable skills because technology and the nature of the workplace are changing at a faster rate than before.”

There are questions about the definition, size, and nature of the skills gap in the labor force. Iowa State University researchers studied some of these questions recently. They examined employment, education and population information, and found the evidence of a skills gap is weak.

Iowa State’s Liesl Eathington noted that many policymakers and employers say there is opportunity in “middle skills” areas, like machining. Yet she said the most recent recession (经济衰退) hit some of those job areas hard. She said students should be on guard because “our economy really isn’t adding that many jobs that require the middle skills.”

She said employers could get more well-qualified applicants if they offered higher wages. She noted that graduates of two-year training programs still generally make less money than graduates of four-year colleges.

The question of finding the night person for the right job remains a difficult one. The Department of Labor says 8.7 million Armenians are unemployed and another 6.7 million can find only part-time work.

1The underlined word “paradox” in paragraph 1 refers to ________.

    A. the large number of unemployed new graduates

    B. the demands employers make on employees

    C. people without jobs and jobs without people

    D. people disqualified for the vacant positions

2What will Nicholas Wyman probably advise new graduates to do to get employed?

    A. To receive technical training. B. To drop the costly college education.

    C. To value the job opportunities. D. To arm themselves with various skills.

3According to Liesl Eathington, what is the solution to the skills gap?

    A. Reforming the dullness of economy. B. Guarding against recessions.

    C. Updating workers’ professional skills. D. Raising employees’ earnings.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the comer from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw two women and a girl screaming on the porch (门廊).

“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell’s three youngest kids.

Entering the burning house was like running into a bucket of black paint. The thick smoke caused Surrell to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible for him to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he went outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.

“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.

Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout (布局) to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

“Baby girl, where are you?” His throat and lungs burned as if he’d breathed in fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung (使疼痛) his eyes. All he could hear was the cracking and popping of burning wood. Then a soft moan emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. A terrible thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.
