21、Explorations of modern literature
MODALITY | On-campus |
SESSION | July 19-August 5 |
DAY&TIME | Monday-Friday 9 am-11 am and 3 pm-5 pm |
STATUS | New |
INSTRUCTOR | Mark Blacher |
Course description
In this course we explore modern literature from early pioneers such as Emily Dickinson, Hemingway, Philip Roth and Toni Morrison. We focus mainly on shorter fiction and poetry, but may also look at excerpts (摘录) from some longer works.
We consider not only the meanings of the works but also how they are written and constructed to give them their power. While we focus largely on close reading and formal analysis, we also look at the historical contexts of the works. Additionally, we pay attention to how literature sounds and how it makes us feel.
Students are expected to write a number of informal reaction pieces, contribute actively to class discussion, take part in a few short creative projects, and prepare short papers and oral presentations on works of their own choice.
Students learn how to read actively, think analytically, present their ideas clearly, and work with others—all skills that will be invaluable to them in college and in their professional and personal lives. No previous knowledge or course work is required.
Instructor: Mark Blacher
Mark Blacher holds a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While at UCLA he taught classics of world literature, and taught students close reading and writing. Mark’s undergraduate degree is from Columbia University. 22、A Japanese company has announced the successful test drive of a flying car. SkyDrive Inc. conducted the public demonstration on August 25.The company said in a news release at the Toyota Test Field, one of the largest in Japan,“It was the first public demonstration for a flying car in Japanese history.”
“We are extremely excited to have achieved Japan’s first-ever manned flight of a flying car in the two dozen months since we founded SkyDrive...” CEOTomohiro Fukuzawa said in a statement. “We want to realize a society where flying cars are an accessible and convenient means of transportation in the skies and people are able to experience a secure, and comfortable new way of life.”
The car, named SD-03, manned with a pilot, took off and circled the field for about four minutes. It is the world’s smallest electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle and takes up the space of about two parked cars, according to the company. The company hopes to make the flying car a part of normal life and not just a commodity. More test flights will occur in the future under different conditions to make sure the safety and technology of the vehicle meet industry standards.
The success of this flight means that it is likely the car will be tested outside of the Toyota Test Field by the end of the year. “The company will continue to develop technologies to safely and securely launch the flying car in 2023,” the news release said,“No price has been announced.”

23、What if it isn’t a dog-eat-dog world? What if caring for a dog or for a mom with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) makes you stronger and allows you to live longer?
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley are challenging our long-held belief that humans are born to be selfish.
Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was misunderstood by his male followers, the researchers say. Rather than “every man for himself”, Darwin believed that humans are successful as a species precisely because of our educational, selfless and sympathetic characteristics.
Why has it taken so long for Darwin’s central revelation(揭示) to be properly understood? “We’ve had too many men in social science,” Berkeley psychology professor Dacher Keltner told me in an interview. “Female scientists acknowledge that caring for people is part of human nature according to the research, which shows the human ability to care exists in our brains and nerve systems.”
In my book Passages in Caregiving, I urge women who take the whole responsibility for taking care of an elderly parent or a sick relative to build a “Circle of Care”. Reach out to your brothers and sisters, friends, neighbors and community volunteers to help you care, because no one can perform this overwhelming role alone. You will be as shocked as I to learn how the most selfless caregivers are rewarded with longer life.
Sympathy is not a woman’s word. In fact it makes all of us stronger under stress and more highly respected by our peers. For so long we have repeated the false saying “Nice guys finish last”. But the 40 richest Americans committed to doing good by donating half their fortunes are no spring chickens. So here is my new explanation:Nice guys die last.
【1】The first paragraph serves to______ .
A. give the background of the topic B. blame the world for selfishness
C. bring out the topic of the passage D. urge people to care for a dog
【2】In Passages in Caregiving, women are advised to_______.
A. help as many people as possible B. share the responsibility of caring with others
C. learn how to live a longer life D. take good care of themselves
【3】The underlined words “no spring chickens” in the last paragraph refer to______.
A. rich people B. poor people C. aged people D. young people
【4】Why does the author mention the 40 richest Americans’ commitment in this passage?
A. To argue against offering sympathy.
B. To use it as an example to support his opinion.
C. To show their generosity to society.
D. To call on people to learn from them.
24、In some snow-covered villages in Altay district of Xinjiang, it’s common in winter to see local herdsmen (牧民) with planks attached to their feet, climb the snowy slopes without any other form of assistance. The pair of planks are wrapped with horsehide (马皮), which serves a double purpose. Remarkably, the horsehide not only can provide friction to prevent skiers from slipping while going up the hills, but also helps them slide more smoothly down the hills.
According to rock carvings uncovered in the area by archaeologists, such skis have served for around 12, 000 years as a means of transportation for the snowfield people of Altay, especially those who had to travel a long way in the snow to herd animals or hunt. The fur skis gradually lost their popularity in recent decades after paved roads linked houses to the outside world. However, in response to the nation’s goal of brightening up grassroots enthusiasm for ice and snow sports, Altay plans to protect and promote its skiing culture and better pass along its skiing tradition to future generations.
Silambek Sakish, 67, a herdsman in the village of Altay, began to learn the craft at the age of 15 from his father. He would cut high-quality pine into a plank and then bend the plank’s front end after the wood was heated in a fire. Wrapping the plank with horsehide was the last step.
Sakish was honored as an heritor of the craft of making fur skis in 2010, which had been assigned as an intangible (非物质) cultural heritage of Xinjiang. His works are exhibited in ski places, airports and train stations across Altay and also at the display center for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to promote the district's deep historical connection to skiing. More young people have come to him to learn the craft, and his youngest son, who is 31, has followed in his footsteps to carry on the tradition.
