  • 21、At a restaurant, a cockroach(蟑螂) suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady. She started screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to throw away the cockroach. Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group. Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama. The waiter rushed forward to their rescue. In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter. The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on his shirt. When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, I picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach responsible for their dramatic behavior? If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed? He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos. It is not the cockroach, but the inability of those people to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach, that disturbed the ladies.

I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it's my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me. It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me. More than the problem, it's my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.

  • 23、Educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune will soon make history as the first black person to have a statue in the U. S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, when her statue replaces that of a general.

Bethune, the daughter of formerly enslaved people, was an influential educator and activist who founded the National Council of Negro Women, advised multiple U. S. presidents and created a boarding school for black children that would later become Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach.

The 11-foot statue weighs more than 6,000 1bs…It was created by artist Nilda Comas, who was chosen from a field of 1,600 applicants and is the first Hispanic master sculptor to create a statue for the National Statuary Hall State Collection. Before she started sculpting, Comas conducted a four-year thorough research, which she called “a beautiful journey.”

The statue features Bethune wearing a cap and long dress and a pearl necklace, holding a black rose in one hand and a walking stick in the other. She’s standing in front of a pile of books, with a warm smile and what one local reporter described as eyes that “register wisdom kindness.”

The base of the statue is inscribed(铭刻)with her name, her home state, birth and death dates, as well as one of her most famous quotes, “Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it may be a diamond in the rough.”

The black rose represents Bethune’s work in education, as well as her belief that “loving thy neighbor” required interracial, inter-religious and international brotherhood, according to a nonprofit organization.

“Although there is no species of flower called a ‘black rose’, Dr. Bethune was attracted by beauty of a rose with a particular dark colour,” it explained. “These dark roses instantly became her favorite. She thereafter referred to her pupils as her ‘black roses’”

【1】Why has Bethune’s statue been set up?

A.Because she offered much advice to US presidents.

  • 24、In Austin, Texas, a construction technology company, ICON, claims to have America’s first 3D-printed homes for sale. Partnering with Kansas City developer 3Strands, the company is building two-to-four-bedroom homes in Austin, the Texas capital.

The 3D-printing construction technology can “precisely(精确地) control the deposition on concrete over a large print area”, so it can build a house in weeks, the company said.

In the US, the first 3D-printed housing community will be built in Rancho Mirage, a desert city in California, according to developer Palari. It covers 5 acres, includes 15 houses and is set for completion by next spring. Each house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms on a 10,000-square-foot lot with a swimming pool and deck only for $595,000.

All the houses will be made from 3D-printed panels by Mighty Buildings, an Oakland, California-based construction technology company. The company uses panelized technology, called the “Mighty Kit System”, to print a “stone-like” material. Unlike ICON, which works on the building site, Mighty Buildings ships the panels to the site, where they are assembled(聚集).

The houses in the Rancho Mirage project, which always cost three to six months using traditional methods, will take a month to install, Palari CEO Basil Starr told the Los Angeles Times. A typical project of this scale would take around three years, but they are planning for no more than a year and a half, he said.

The pre-sale campaign started in late February and sold out within days, said Starr, adding that most of the buyers were people with practical knowledge or understanding of this kind of technology and a passion for sustainability.

Apart from the construction speed, the companies also stress that 3D printing is more eco-friendly than traditional building methods because 3D printers produce the precise amount of material, while building wood-frame houses will result in construction waste ending up in landfills.

The 3D-printing technology also provides “safer” houses that are designed to withstand fire, flood, wind and other natural disasters better than conventionally built houses, according to ICON.

【1】What are the main features of the 3D-printed houses according to the passage?

    A.Affordable , eco-friendly and safe.

    B.Cheap ,comfortable and eco-friendly.

    C.Time-saving , safe and practical.

    D.Practical , comfortable and cheap.

【2】From the passage, which of the following statements is True ?

A.ICON will work together with developer Palari to build the first 3D-printed housing community .

B.The 3D-printed houses are popular with all citizens.

C.Both ICON and Mighty Buildings will transport the printed materials to the building sites.

D.3D-printing will help save building materials.

【3】What is the attitude of the author to the 3D-printing construction technology?

    A.Neutral.

    B.Positive.

    C.Negative.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】The author writes the text to tell readers ________.

A.the 3D-printed houses are much better than traditional ones

B.the 3D-printing technology is widely used

    C.3D-printing construction technology companies

    D.3D-printing technology used in construction

  • 25、   Technology is playing a vital role in preservation and ecology research. Drones (无人机) hold huge _______ in the fight to save the world’s remaining wildlife from extinction. So researchers can now track wild animals through dense forests and monitor whales in vast oceans. It’s estimated that up to five living species become extinct every day, making it urgent that universities develop new technologies to capture the data that can persuade _______ to act.

The British International Education Association hosted a conference in January to _______ the importance of technological solutions in protecting vulnerable (易受伤害的) species and ecosystems. Speakers underlined how technology can help _______: drones can circle high above the ocean to spot whales, while certain cameras can identify members of an individual species.

According to Claudio Sillero, biology professor at Oxford University, technology is changing how preservation research is done — but it’s in a(n) _______ way. As technology gets better and cheaper, researchers become better at doing what they were already doing. _______, remote sensing used to be a very technical tool but is now widespread, and everyone uses global positioning system (GPS) for surveying.

But teaching preservation and ecology courses in university _______. Some teach drone surveying methods in depth while others don’t even mention them. “The fact is, using drones is quite a(n) _______ to the interdisciplinary (跨学科的) ‘unknown’ of engineering, and potentially an area where lecturers may not feel confident to teach yet,” Serge Wich, an expert in primate biology says. “Students are taught about _______ technologies such as automatic sound recorders, but drones are often missing from university teaching. Consequently, drone use among researchers is still fairly ________ and focused on getting photos.”

Wich’s team of researchers used techniques to develop a fully automated drone technology system that ________ and monitors the health of endangered animals globally. It’s designed to be cheap, stable and simple to use, so that local communities in developing countries can operate it ________ without technical background. Yet it’s not more widely used on the grounds of researchers’ lack of skills to use this technology. In biology, where drones are used, few can program an algorithm (算法) specifically for their preservation or research problem. “There’s much that needs to be done to ________ those two worlds and to make AI more user-friendly so that people who can’t program can still use the technology,” Wich says.

________, the sad truth is that better technology alone will not save any more species from dying out, Greengrass warns. “As human populations increase, so do threats and pressure on wild places. Preservationists are ________ for not doing enough but it’s often an issue of people, conflict and governance.” Technology may help provide far greater knowledge, but governments still need to act.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

There's more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.

On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. Many associate foods from our childhood with warm feelings and fond memories, tying us to our families. On a large scale, food operates as an expression of cultural identity, Traditional cuisine (烹饪法) is passed down from one generation to the next. Immigrants bring the food of their countries where they go, and cooking traditional food is a symbol of pride for their ethnicity (民族特色) as well as a means of coping with homesickness.

Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some ingredients needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants who sell dishes have to alter the original dishes to satisfy a wider range of customers. Alterations to original dishes can create new flavors that still preserve the cultural significance of the dish.

What stays the same is the extent to which each country or community's unique cuisine reflects its unique history, lifestyle, values, and beliefs. For example, in China, harmony is a vital characteristic in almost every aspect of life. This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almost every flavour is used in a balanced way. Throughout history, Chinese people are of the belief that food not only needs to be nutritious but also needs to look appealing, so they put a lot of effort into decorating the dishes, with vibrant red as their traditional colour.

As the world becomes more globalized, it is easier to access cuisines from different cultures. We should not only accept our traditions through our culture's food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their foods. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window to culture, and it should be treated as such.
