二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   For some people, there’s no better companion than mans best friend-a dog. This four-legged pet can bring comfort and joy and provide much- needed exercise for you when it needs walkies! This probably explains why dog ownership increased last year because people spent more time at home during he CovID-I9 lockdown.

However, as demand for a new dog increased, so did the price tag. Popular breeds, such as Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels, saw even sharper price increases, and puppies have been selling for $3,000 or more.

Animal welfare charities fear that high prices could encourage puppy farming, smuggling (走私) or dog theft. An investigation found some breeders have been selling puppies and kittens on social media sites--something charities have called “extremely irresponsible”.

But despite some new owners purchasing a dog legally, maybe from a rescue center or registered breeder, they’ve proved to be ill-prepared for life with a new pet, and the pet itself has found it hard to come to terms with life in a new home.

Looking to the future, there are concerns about the welfare of these much-loved pets. Lan Alkin manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanct uary in the UK, notes: “At the moment, the dogs are having a great time, but separation anxiety could still surface when people go back to work.” And Cliare Calder from the UKs Dogs Trust rescue charity says, “The economic situation also means that some people may find they can’t afford to look after a dog.” The message is not to buy a dog in haste and to pick one that fits into our lifestyle.

【1】The greater demand for dogs can cause the following problems except ________.

    A.illegal trade of dogs

    B.less dog farming

    C.high prices of dogs

    D.online sale of dogs

【2】What does the underlined phrase"come to terms with"in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Fit in with

    B.Go in for

    C.Make up for.

    D.End up with

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Despite the problems, dogs are living happily.

B.The writer has a positive attitude towards dogs future.

C.Experts are worried that dogs will be unaffordable to people.

D.The writer advises people to think twice before keeping dogs as pets.

  • 22、After realizing students at his elementary school were going hungry at home. PE teacher Jason Watson got a wave of inspiration and a cool set of wheels.

Jason and his wife, school librarian Anne, bought a used ice-cream truck, and for the past two summers, the couple, both 39, have delivered hot homecooked lunches and icy treats to kids in need in their 1, 300-person town of Frazeysburg, Ohio, with the help of their own kids.

It all started back in 2016 when the pair started AIM Outreach, an extracurricular pro- gram for kids that included free lunches. When the tough time came in 2020, their in-person outreach was paused indefinitely. So one day Jason asked a local ice cream truck owner if he’d drive the family around to hand out free treats. What he got was something more.

“He just fell so in love with our community and what we were doing that he offered one of his ice cream trucks to us, ”Jason says. The couple purchased the truck in October, 2020 and have been hard at work since.

The family cooks all the meals themselves from scratch, posting on social media the dates and times when they will be delivering. They serve about 70 meals a week in the summer time. To date, they estimate they’ve served about 1, 500 lunches from the truck.

The couple launched a GoFundMe in June, 2022 when the truck needed both a new trans- mission and a new engine. They raised more than $ 10. 000, They’ve been blown away by the outpouring of donations.

“And we’ve been inspired to do more, ”says Anne. “Our dream is to possibly open a free cafe where we invite people to sit and have a hot dinner. Then we can sit down and share life together. That’s kind of our vision going ahead. ”

【1】What made Jason Watson start the delivery?

    A.A cool set of wheels.

  • 23、Billions will be spent trying to deal with a bargain in the approach to Christmas. But as close attention turns to whether or not the deals on offer are real discounts, instead of marketing tricks, spare a thought for the thousands of extra deliveries that will be made and the resulting crowding and blockage, CO2 emissions (释放), and stress that this shopping holiday creates.

Demand for more drivers highlights the highly seasonal nature of shopping, with similar increases on Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and the run up to Christmas. Although the industry is constantly learning from past mistakes to better serve customers, it neglects extremely important energy, ability to move around and health issues. Behind the scenes, the basic equipment that makes all this online shopping possible is huge—the extra delivery vans add to already crowded and blocked roads, and drivers suffer from stress and tiredness. Seasonal shopping events like Black Friday harm people and the planet.

One medium-sized business in London recently told us that roughly 75% of the goods received by its front desk in the run up to Christmas were personal parcels. Extremely importantly, in a hub-and-spoke (辐射状的)model, not only do these parcels arrive from different vans travelling long distances from different warehouses, but delivery results in travelling on some of the most precious, crowded and blocked and polluted streets in London—simply to service online shopping preferences.

At this early stage of the next evolution of shopping, it is important that we consider the benefits and broader societal costs of different shopping and delivery options. Or else we risk hard-wiring in a set of expectations fighting with our responsibilities to cut carbon and improve air quality in cities.

【1】What can we know about the result of extra holiday delivery?

    A.It creates less pleasure.

    B.It produces more CO2 emissions.

C.It makes people crowd in the shops.

D.It makes the drivers earn more money.

【2】What can we infer about the drivers in Paragraph 2?

A.They harm the people and the planet.

B.They are needed less on Mother’s Day.

C.They lead to crowded and blocked roads.

D.They feel exhausted during the holiday shopping delivery.

【3】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “highlights”?

    A.Emphasizes.

    B.Suggests.

    C.Recommends.

    D.Challenges.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.The benefits of holiday shopping.

B.The concerns about the holiday shopping delivery.

C.The stress and tiredness caused by the holiday shopping.

D.The holiday shopping’s influence on society and environment.

[6] The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, awful, dirty place, full of diseases. It’s just a different place.

[7] So you must go out and buy new guidebooks. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

[8] It’s just a place. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that the Netherlands …and the Netherlands has tulips. The Netherlands even has Rembrandts.

[9] But everyone you coming and going from Italy and they’re all boasting about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say, “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.

[10] And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away because the loss of that dream is a very, very significant loss.

[11] But if you spend your life regretting the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about the Netherlands.

Also, I won first prize in the English Speech Contest last month. I think there is still much for me to learn to improve myself.

Therefore, I expect to put my time and effort to good use by performing with other club members. I will appreciate it if I am given the chance.
