21、Look at the keyboard of any standard typewriter or computer. “Q” “W” “E” “R” “T” and “Y” are the first six letters. Who decided on this arrangement of the letters? And why?
People tried for centuries to invent the typewriter. In 1714 in England, Henry Mill filed a patent for a machine called An Artificial Machine Or Method for the Impressing or Transcribing of Letters, Singly or Progressively one after another, as in Writing, drawing upon this way all Writing may be absorbed in Paper so Neat and Exact as not to be distinguished from Print. That machine probably didn’t sell because no one could remember its name!
The first practical typewriter was patented in the United States in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. His machine was known as the type-writer. It had a movable carriage, a lever for turning paper from line to line, and a keyboard on which the letters were arranged in alphabetical order.
But Sholes had a problem. On his first model, his “ABC” key arrangement caused the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly. Sholes didn’t know how to keep the keys from sticking, so his solution was to keep the typist from typing too fast. Sholes asked his brother-in-law to rearrange the keyboard so that the commonest letters were not so close together and the type bars would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not clash together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was the QWERTY arrangement typists use today. Of course. Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. The only efficiency it added was to slow the typist down, since almost any word in the English language required the typist’s fingers to cover more distance on the keyboard.
The advantages of the typewriter outweighed the disadvantages of the keyboard. Typists memorized the crazy letter arrangement, and the typewriter became a huge success. By the time typists had memorized the new arrangement of letters and built their speed, typewriter technology had improved, and the keys didn’t stick as badly as they had at first.

23、 We all carry fear, and accepting the type of fear you carry is the first step in punishing past it. So, here’s a breakdown of the fear archetypes(典型) and how to make them work for you. We also invited Dr. Alicia Hodge to give us her feedback in a few of them.
The procrastinator(拖延症患者)
The procrastinators often obsess(痴迷于) over the outcome of whatever they’re doing and insist on it being perfect. Because of this, they tend to spend too much time planning and researching instead of simply diving in.
For procrastinators, it’s important to push past that fear of starting. Hodge suggests setting a deadline for when your planning and researching period will end and when you’ll actually get started.
The people pleaser
Those who have the people-pleaser archetype struggle with the fear of being judged and worry most about disappointing others. They have a hard time setting clear boundaries and saying “no.”
“Having boundaries often sounds scary to someone who is used to putting others first” Hodge says. “Remind yourself that you deserve to be prioritized, just as much as other people in your life.”
The self-doubter
This archetype is dominated by the fear of not being good enough, those who self-doubt tend to feel not confident about their capabilities.
A good way to overcome self-doubt is to step outside your comfort zone every once in a while – and take note of the outcome. Practice being proactive about your life, you’ll be surprised to see just how much you are capable of.
【1】What probably is Dr. Alice Hodge?
A.An editor B.A reporter
C.A psychologist D.A teacher
【2】What is the underlined phrase “diving in” in the second paragraph mean?

C.Ignoring others’ judgement. D.Taking an active part in life.

William Flaherty was diagnosed (诊断)with HLH when he was 3. It’s an often-fatal disease where the immune (免疫的)system attacks the body’s organs.
The doctor gave William 9.5 (on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is you’re super healthy and 10 is you’re dead), which hit the family. There were days when they didn’t know if he would live through. In April of 2008, William got a bone-marrow (骨髓)transplant from his older brother Charles. The recover from it took long. He had a lot of aftereffects and even had 22 of his teeth pulled. At five, William skied for the first time. It helped a lot with low bone density (密度)and got him back in good shape.
One year later, William moved to Puerto Rico and fell in love with the island. When he brought up to represent Puerto Rico in Alpine skiing, his friends laughed. Puerto Rico doesn’t have snow. But William didn’t quit.
However, it was tough for William to balance his training with medical appointments and going to school. So he did a school program totally online. He went to a lot of camps and there were lots of early mornings like 4:00 AM alarm clock. But he has managed to maintain straight As since halfway through third grade and he plans to head to college to study aerospace engineering.
Even a cold can lay him up for two weeks, so William took extra pre-cautions over the last two years. While training, he wore an N95 mask the whole time and couldn’t ride the lift with anyone. After training, he came home directly, hid in his bedroom and stayed away from people.
In 2022, the 17-year-old boy has had more than 30 operations. Having prepared for 7 years he finally made it to the starting line at Beijing Olympics.
“Skiing is really helpful because it forces me to focus on one thing,” he said. “I really want to prove to all the other transplant survivors that they can do whatever they want in life.”
