21、 There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University. Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.
【1】According to the study, moderate heavy exercise________.
A.makes people’s heart better than their heads
B.helps people keep a younger brain
C.makes people ten years younger
D.makes people look like potatoes
【2】What’s true about the study?
A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C.High-intensity exercise is better.
D.Ten people scored best on the test.
【3】How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A.By observing people exercise. B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison. D.By doing a brain MRI.
【4】What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to keep healthy B.Ways to make your brain work better
C.To exercise or not D.Moderate exercise keeps your brain younger
22、 Adults perform better when they have a lot to gain or lose. But scientists did not know whether teens did too. To find out, Insel asked 88 people between the ages of 13 and 20. She had them try a game. The participants looked at pictures of planets on a computer screen. They had to click as fast as they could when they saw a planet with designs. They were not supposed to click if a planet had no designs.
The participants could earn 20 cents for right answers but lose 10 cents for wrong ones. In other sessions, they’d get a dollar for right answers, and lose a half dollar for wrong ones. Players of all ages wanted to win the money, and cared more about bigger rewards than smaller ones.
As Insel expected, adults performed better when the stakes were high. But teens 13 to 18 played just as well whether they stood to win 20 cents or a dollar. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes.
Insel’s team published this work November 28, 2017, in Nature Communications.
Brains change and mature during adolescence. And not all parts grow at the same rate. Insel was interested in two areas in particular. One is deep inside the brain and just above the ears. Called the ventral striatum (腹侧纹状体), it helps the brain calculate rewards. The ventral striatum becomes mature during the teen years.
The brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶) takes longer to mature. This area is important for planning and setting goals. It may not mature until early adulthood.
Nerve pathways - think of them as the brain’s “wiring” - connect the ventral striatum and prefrontal cortex. This lets the two regions communicate to make decisions. But because the prefrontal cortex matures later, the wiring between the two may not be complete until adulthood.
【1】Which of the following can explain Insel’s research?
A.Teens ignore key points in many aspects.
B.Adults behave better with higher rewards.
C.Teens give more attention to exams than usual work.
D.Adults behave more maturely than children in every way.
【2】What does the underlined word “stakes” refer to?
A.The final results of games or experiments.
B.The things that can be gained or lost in races.
C.The ambitions or energies that one experiences in games.
D.The powers that make one feel less pressure or pain.
【3】From the passage, we can know ___________.
A.the experiment aims to find out adults’ behaviour facing high stakes
B.teens have better performances in the first rounds
C.adults care less about the experiment at first
D.adults and teens show differently with high stakes
【4】Which is the best title of the passage?
A.Unlike adults, teens don’t perform better with high stakes
B.Who perform better, adults or children?
C.Stakes are the key points in promoting one’s passion
D.Whether low stakes or high stakes, one behaves similarly
23、Science fiction pioneer and writer Wu Yan won this year’s National Outstanding Children’s Literature Award for his latest work China Orbit. The book focuses on the development of the Chinese aerospace (航空航天) industry, and it was inspired by the planning and preparation for China’s first but canceled manned spacecraft, “Shuguang 1”, also known as Project 714, during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“I collected many historical documents and stories and started writing decades ago,” Wu remembered. Partly based on Wu’s own experiences in the 1970s, the book is a combination of reality and fiction, and in some ways his own memoir (回忆录) was added into the science fiction. This innovative and unique writing method makes the book stand out and has even stirred up a debate on how to categorize it. Is it science fiction, popular science, children’s literature, or aerospace literature?
His fellow science fiction writer Liu Cixin, author of The Three-Body Problem, sees it more deeply, and believes China Orbit is not really children’s science fiction or popular science. He thinks it is too complicated to be classed under a single category. He speaks highly of China Orbit as a unique science fiction novel that vividly shows a child’s real-life experience in a military camp of a specific era.
In Wu’s opinion, China is a big market for children’s science fiction, but it still lacks extraordinary works. He warned people not to try to earn quick money from it after The Three-Body Problem frenzy and movie blockbuster The Wandering Earth because Chinese science fiction still has a long way to go. “We need to build Chinese science fiction step by step, with an accumulation (积累) of really great works. We need to innovate, and treat it as part of building China’s new culture,” Wu said.
【1】What is the book China Orbit mainly about?
A.The space industry in China.
B.The introduction to Project 714.
C.Stories about Chinese outstanding astronauts.
D.Preparations for China’s first manned spacecraft.
【2】What is Wu’s approach to writing China Orbit?
A.He organizes the writing by time.
B.He tells the story in the form of debate.
C.He focuses on creating the role of children.
D.He combines his personal experiences with fiction.
【3】What is Liu Cixin’s attitude to China Orbit?
A.Doubtful.
B.Unclear.
C.Favorable.
D.Tolerant.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.China Orbit has great commercial value.
B.Chinese science movies are of poor quality.
C.Innovation is crucial to Chinese science fiction.
D.Wu Yan is disappointed at the Chinese film market.
24、 There is certainly evidence that actors experience a blending of their real self with their assumed characters. For instance, Benedict Cumberbatch said, “My mum says I'm much more impatient with her when I'm filming Sherlock.”
Mark Seton, a researcher at the University of Sydney, has even coined the term “post-dramatic stress disorder” to describe the lasting effects experienced by actors who lose themselves in a role. “Actors may often prolong habits of the characters they have embodied,” he writes.
A recent finding doesn't involve acting, and it indicates that merely spending some time thinking about another person seemed to rub off on the volunteers’ sense of self led by Meghan Meyer at Princeton University. Across several studies, these researchers asked volunteers to first rate their own personalities, memories or physical attributes, and then to perform the same task from the perspective of another person. For instance, they might score the emotionality of various personal memories, and then rate how a friend or relative would have experienced those same events.
After taking the perspective of another, the volunteers scored themselves once again: the consistent finding was that their self-knowledge was now changed—their self-scores had shifted to become more similar to those they'd given for someone else. For instance, if they had initially said the trait term “confident” was only moderately related to themselves and then rated the term as being strongly related to a friend's personality, when they came to rescore themselves, they now tended to see themselves as more confident. Remarkably, this morphing of the self with another was still apparent even if a 24-hour gap was left between taking someone else's perspective and re-rating oneself.
“By simply thinking about another person, we may adapt our self to take the shape of that person” said Meyer and her colleagues. That our sense of self should have this quality might be a little discouraging, especially for anyone who has struggled to establish a firm sense of identity. Yet there is an optimistic message here, too. The challenge of improving ourselves—or at least seeing ourselves in a more positive light—might be a little easier than we thought. By roleplaying or acting out the kind of person we would like to become, or merely by thinking about and spending time with people who embody the kind of attributes we would like to see in ourselves, we can find that our sense of self changes in desirable ways.
“As each of us chooses who to befriend, who to model, and who to ignore” write Meyer and her colleagues, “we must make these decisions aware of how they shape not only the fabric of our social networks, but even our sense of who we are.”

Jeremy Savage aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, were close friends. They grew up together because their parents were friends, too. Every autumn, the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves next morning and promised to back before dusk.
Next morning, the boys set out with a backpack packed with food and water, the autumn breeze pinking their cheeks. Along the winding path, they glanced at a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Jeremy and Ian decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Jeremy shouted. NO REPLY. “Help!Help!” Jeremy almost cried. But still no replies. If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag, Jeremy mouthed, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Ian was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Jeremy used an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.
