二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When young, I loved going on trail (小路)runs. It was my favorite way to escape stress. So, When I was back in my hometown after a tough first year of my Ph.D. program, I thought a trail run was just what I needed. But instead of helping me relax, the run did just the opposite.

After I moved to the city for college, where my runs were on flat concrete paths instead of winding dirt trails, I used a GPS watch. When I went on trail runs again in the country, it constantly reminded me of the fact that I wasn’t keeping up with my usual pace. I turned my watch off, thinking that would allow me to enjoy my surroundings and find the peace I expected, but I worried I was underperforming. Why cant I let go and just enjoy myself? I wondered. But after some introspection(反省), I realized why I was struggling ——both on trail runs and in graduate school.

Going into my Ph.D., I had thought that my solid undergraduate track record would set me up for instant success. To my surprise, I was wrong. I lacked confidence in my research abilities which I thought stopped me performing well and I constantly felt my progress was too slow. Other students’ self -confidence and their excellent results made me feel insecure. Finally, one day I broke down in tears in my adviser’s office.

Then came my visit home: I was having trouble because I hadn’t properly adjusted my expectations to the differences between an urban run and a trail run.

A Ph. D. is like a trail run: Sometimes you can run fast. Sometimes you might find yourself climbing up a steep, winding trail at a snail’s pace. And that’s OK. Barriers are unavoidable and success looks and feels different on a challenging trail than it does on a smooth, flat path. Sometimes it’s best to take a deep breath and do your best to meet the challenge.

【1】How did the author feel when he was on trail runs again?

    A.Relaxed

    B.Tired

    C.Anxious

    D.Happy

【2】What resulted in the authors poor performance in Ph.D.?

    A.His lack of confidence

    B.His lack of hard work

    C.His poor research abilities

    D.His poor track record

【3】What does the author want to tell us?

A.Failure is the mother of success

    B.Working out regularly is beneficial

C.It's important to make necessary adjustments

D.It's vital to turn to others for help

  • 22、When interviewed on the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s 2019-20 season, Mark Tatum, deputy commissioner of the NBA, said,"It's been a challenging year. Apart from being distressed by the pandemic and social unrest, we also lost two of our icons - David Sternand Kobe Bryant. It's been our longest season in NBA history, and so much was thrown-at us" . However, he added that the NBA was incredibly blessed with being able to restart its season four months after its initial shutdown.

The NBA shut down on March 11 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Later, it became clear that resuming the NBA's season was far more complex than simply rescheduling games. The NBA community, like the world at large, has lost friends and family to the virus. It has wrestled with economic hardship job losses and mental health issues. It has gone from trying to escape risk to understanding how to live with it. Michele Roberts, executive director of the National Basketball Player Association (NBPA), made it clear.“It's really been an evolution of emotional reactions from one extreme to another. Complete disbelief, ignorance (无知) and not taking it seriously, to gradually coming to a point where, "OK, what are my real options here?"

Roberts attributed the reopening of the NBA season to the strong, long-standing relationship between the NBA staff and Bob lger, executive chairman of the Walt Disney Company. Adam Silver, NBA commissioner, similarly pointed out that their mutual trust helped push the process forward. Eventually, they agreed that playing without fans and out of the home arenas would be a workable choice. After numerous calls for months among NBA and NBPA committee members, business leaders, public health officials, the managers and presidents of the teams, they finally struck a deal with the Walt Disney Company to use the resort (度假胜地) near Orlando, Florida to build a single bubble site for the games, training and housing for all the players, coaches and media staff.

Their endeavour paid off. On July 7, 22 teams gathered on the bubble campus in Florida where they lived and isolated themselves from the world outside in the following three months. Reflecting on their path, Silver believed that a sense of unity from top to bottom is the key."Without it, the financial disputes and the safety protocols (协议) would never be settled."

【1】How did Mark Tatum feel about the 2019-20 season?

A.Being able to resume the season was delightful.

B.It was too hard to bring the season to an end.

    C.Controlling the pandemic was impossible.

    A.Cooperated.

    B.Continued.

    C.Struggled.

【3】Why was the restarting of the 2019-20 season possible?

A.Fans supported their players at the bubble site.

B.Business leaders invested a lot on the home arenas.

C.Walt Disney Company provided training for players

D.Relevant units cooperated with each other closely.

    【4】Which proverb best describes NBA's 2019-20 season?

  • 24、   Supermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives(可代替品)to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products are popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’ milk for health reasons, as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to making milk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!

Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in 2014 after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’ milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative originated from his love of cheesy pizza. Pandya was motivated to take action after being forced to eat some “really bad” dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich.

The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab, the pair spent nine months first isolating(分离)cow DNA then inserting it into yeast(酵母). This genetic change enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats.

The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf life and, most important of all, is Earth friendly. According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional(常规的)milk production, their process uses 65% less energy, creates 84% less greenhouse gas emissions and requires 91% less land and an amazing 98% less water! Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian consumers will no longer have to deal with the unpleasant cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas.

The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already many good cows’ milk products available to consumers.

1What does the underlined word “those” in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.Actions. B.Products C.People. D.Reasons.

2What motivated the company’s founders to make the new product?

A.Their deep concern for the environment.

B.Their worry that farm animals were poorly treated.

    C.The over-consumption of the dairy-based products.

D.The poor taste of dairy-free cheese presently available.

3What can be inferred from paragraph 4?

A.The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.

B.Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.

C.The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.

D.The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.

    4What’s the passage mainly about?

A.Producing healthier Cheese. B.Protecting the environment.

C.Making milk without cows. D.Reducing the waste of food.
