  • 21、The Sanxingdui Museum in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province enjoyed huge popularity during the three-day Qingming Festival holidays by receiving nearly 20,000 visitors on the peak day, after the new archaeological(考古的) discoveries brought international attention.

According to media reports, the museum saw over 15,000 visitors on Saturday, the first day of the Qingming Festival holidays, breaking its record for daily visitors. And on the next day, more visitors swarmed into the museum to exceed 19,800. To cope with the large flow of people, on Sunday afternoon, the official Weibo account of the Sanxingdui Museum released a message to remind visitors of avoiding rush hours or rescheduling their visiting time.

The Sanxingdui Museum showcases various kinds of precious cultural relics unearthed at the site, such as the 2.62-meter-tall standing statue, 1.38-meter-wide bronze mask, and 3.95-meter-high bronze tree. Earlier on March 20, Chinese archaeologists announced some new major discoveries made during the 37th excavation (挖掘) since its last excavation 35 years ago. The ruins were first discovered in the late 1920s and first excavated in 1934. More than 500 important cultural relics have been unearthed in the six newly-found pits. Since the new discoveries were known to the public, the number of people visiting the Sanxingdui Museum has increased sharply.

The museum said although it was open as usual, the newly-found pits had not opened to the public yet and the newly-excavated cultural relics were still under restoration and couldn’t meet the public currently. But a hall for cultural relic conservation and restoration would be in pilot operation in April and officially opened on May 18. Visitors to it can see how the relics are restored, according to Zhu Yarong, vice director of the Sanxingdui Museum.

  • 23、A breed of upstart apps is taking on an internet function that might seem unneeded or even ill- advised: helping teens talk to strangers.

Branded as “social discovery” services, these apps pitch themselves as alternatives to outlets that already specialize in online connections, like Facebook and Instagram. They say they are better at helping young users meet like-minded people outside their existing circles. And they say they have safeguards, such as separating users by age and using artificial intelligence, to protect against the inappropriate or unsafe behavior that has plagued previous attempts to connect young people online.

Their user numbers suggest that, whether they succeed in striking the right balance, apps like Yubo and Hoop are tapping into a need among young people for new ways to branch out online.

“There is no place today to socialize online,” says Sacha Lazimi, the 26-year-old French co-founder of Yubo, which connects strangers with messaging and live, streaming.

It is a counterintuitive statement for anyone who had seen teens sending Snaps rapid fire to their friends, responding to videos on TikTok, Face Timing for hours, or using Instagram. But Mr. Lazimi thinks those platforms allow for too much passive participation. “Snapchat, Instagram and Tik Tok are all about performance, content and individual”, he says.

Yubo features a swiping interface similar to that of Tinder. But Mr. Lazimi insists it is not a dating app. The point, he says, is to facilitate communication between people all over the world who share mutual interests. Yubo isn't present everywhere in the lives of American teens yet —and maybe never will be —but the company says the app has 25 million users signed up, with nearly half of daily use now coming from America.

But some of these apps have also been the subject of safety concerns. Yubo has also faced its own safety challenges. In Florida, law-enforcement officially say they arrested a man who reportedly kidnapped a teenager through Yubo.

In a statement, Yubo said that the prevention of child abuse has been a key priority for the past three years. “Yubo recognizes its responsibility in protecting young people using its service and has gone far beyond many of the main social media services.”

However, actually teens are doing more to protect themselves than many give them credit for, says Dr. Hinduja. “They are doing something to keep themselves safe or we would have strikingly more victimization than we do.”

【1】In terms of what Facebook and Instagram can do to help and protect the users, which one is NOT mentioned?

A.Sending appropriate notifications to specific users.

B.Separating users by different age groups.

C.Using artificial intelligence to ensure internet safety.

D.Helping users find people with common interests.

【2】In this passage, the word “plagued” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to ________.

    A.highlighted

    B.justified

    C.troubled

    D.extended

【3】In paragraph 5, the writer mentions “Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok” in order to ________.

A.compare the various functions different apps boast

B.state the necessity for the emergence of apps like Yubo

C.clarify the reason for their being replaced by other apps

D.prove the importance of active participation in communication

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Instagram has already lost its appeal to the young users.

B.Yubo fails to do what it promised to protect teenagers.

C.Hoop is intended for communication among colleges.

D.TikTok is a video-sharing app exclusively used in America.

【5】What's the author’s attitude towards apps like Yubo?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Prejudiced.

    D.Negative

    Red Sorghum

Top reviews from the United States

jklm                    It was interesting and vivid, but not…

This is a ‘history’ of a family recalling various exploits of family members. I liked the realism but the jumping about backwards and forwards from decade to decade makes me confused.

There is a distinct lack of ideals or kindness, but it did lead me to reflect on the charm that gang leaders can have. So it was interesting and vivid, but not a page turner or a pleasant read.

    K.N.R.                    A New Classic

War cannot destroy all. This family stretches three generations and the bonds are as strong as the sorghum, though perhaps suffering from storms. His style of writing is very pretty, sometimes too much and sometimes just perfect. The novel switches lawlessly back and forth. The use of third-person always enables the writing to adjust to different scenes with ease. The only bad part is the end. Mo Yan tries too hard to force a feeling of filial (孝顺的) devotion and ancestral respect on the reader. Otherwise it is an exciting, intense book with violence, horror, and shooting. An extraordinary achievement.

【1】What do we know about Red Sorghum?

A.It is a non-fiction for those who lived in late 1930s China.

B.George Backman is one of the authors.

C.The novel gives us the story in order of time.

D.It tells the history of three generations struggling during the war-torn time.

【2】Which aspect does K.N.R. feel pity for?

A.He/She can’t understand where the novel was heading.

B.The book can only be listened.

C.The author tried hard to show blind respect to parents and ancestors.

D.The war that Chinese people were faces with was too harsh.

【3】You are most likely to read this on ______.

    A.travel website

    B.short video website

    C.shopping website

    D.news website
