21、 What is celebrity (名人)? The word is mostly used for the famous people in the world of entertainment (娱乐图). Film stars and pop musicians become celebrities if they are very popular or successful. In most (but not all) cases, they become famous by being good at what they do. Their names and faces are familiar (熟悉的) to most people, who have either seen them on stage or read about them in the newspapers and magazines.
Over the years, other groups of people have become eligible for celebrity status (地位). These include sportsmen and sportswomen (such as footballers, tennis players and racing drivers), especially if their success makes them rich. Things are a little different now. It seems that anyone can become a celebrity, no matter whether they have any skills or talent. In fact some usual people have become famous just for performing badly on TV shows.
I do not envy (羡慕) these people. They may be rich. but they have no private (私有的) time and they are not that happy. No matter where they go, they will always be followed by some people, waiting for the opportunity to take an ugly picture that they can share with all over the world.
【1】What do we know about celebrities?

22、 As I enjoyed the soft sunshine in the pool, my 8-year-old daughter swam up behind me.
"Guess who, Mommy?" she said.
"No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?" I joked.
The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.
"Remember this," I told myself. "You are happy, right here, right now."
Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.
"Just keep going," I would think, or, "How many sleeps until the weekend?"
I didn't like what I was like—someone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.
My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.
When she was really young, I loved the freedom of going to work as the sun was rising, happy that my family was still sound asleep. Then later, my daughter would set her alarm (闹钟) so she could wake up early with me to chat in the dark together.
The morning I planned to tell everyone I was quitting (放弃) my job, we sat together on the couch. I told her how nervous I was about sharing my news in a few hours' time. Stroking (抚摸) her hair, I asked my daughter what she thought about my decision. "We'll be so much happier, Mommy," she said.
Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.
Besides, I'm not disappearing— there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.
Who knows what's ahead?
Nobody knows what the future holds, but when it comes to my own, I can make sure it will be filled with long afternoons in the pool with my daughter.

23、
Most people of the world do not bow(鞠躬) to each other, but Japanese people do. They often bow when they meet. Men bow to men and to women. Men and women may also bow to each other, but usually only if they do not know each other. The younger, or more junior person bows more deeply than the older, or more senior person. The Japanese also bow to say “thank you” for something, or to apologize for something.
Schoolchildren do not bow to each other. Schoolgirls say goodbye to each other by waving their hands and saying “bye bye”. Schoolboys may copy Westerners and pat each other on the back or make “high fives” with their hands.
Many types of hand gestures(手势) have special meanings. You may see Japanese people put their thumb and index finger together to form a circle. This circle represents(代表) a coin and this gesture is the sign for money. If the Japanese want to indicate(表明) “me” without using words, they point to themselves by putting a finger to their noses, but Westerners would point to their chests. All young Japanese children learn to make a “V” sign with their middle and index fingers when someone takes their photograph. In Japan, this sign means “peace”, but in England this sign means “victory”. To say “No”, “I don’t know” or “I don’t understand”, Japanese people wave their hands in front of their faces, so it may be difficult to understand exactly what someone means.
Nodding of the head may also be confusing. When Japanese people nod their heads, it does not mean they agree with what you are saying. It means that they understand what you are saying. You must also be careful not to misunderstand a smile. When the Japanese smile they may not be happy, in fact they may be embarrassed(尴尬的).
As in most countries in the world, Japanese people use a lot of body language. Some of it you will understand and some of it will be new or confusing to you.
