  • 23、It’s baby-animal season in the towns north of New York. But with many of the mothers gone missing, humans are stepping in to help out.

Patrick Moore, the volunteer president of Animal Nation, a nonprofit animal-rescue group in Rye, N.Y., harbors baby deer in his home shower when the facility is overcrowded.

Normally, when the mother deer is away, the fawn(幼鹿)hides in tall grass and remains vigilant-eyes open and ears pricked, listening for movement. When the doe returns, she feeds her baby milk and licks it all over to remove its scent. Her cleaning ensures that predators will not detect a whiff of her baby.

But sometimes the doe does not return-hit by a car, perhaps.

Fortunately, Mr. Moore knows how to be a doe. In his home bathroom, he cleans them imitating the mother deer. Every two to four hours, he feeds the fawns goat milk. “The hardest thing is not letting them imprint,” Mr. Moore said. A cuddled baby deer can easily come to think of itself as a human, too, making it difficult to release the animal back into the wild.

Although he is president of Animal Nation, Mr. Moore is an unpaid volunteer. But if there is space in his own home, he can’t help but help the animals. “People say, ‘Let me visit your facility,’” he said. “And I say, ‘You’re coming to my bathroom.’”

Sometimes, after being released to nature, the fawns return to Animal Nation as early as the following year, their legs broken by cars. Mr. Moore said that it was easy to spot a mature deer he looked after as a fawn. “They’ll come closer than a deer should,” he said. “And you know it's your baby.”

【1】Why would the doe lick her baby over?

    A.to keep the fawn clean

B.to remove the dirt from its body

C.to hide its smell from the predators

D.to keep it distant from the predators

【2】What's the most difficult thing in taking care of the baby deer?

    A.to avoid their misunderstanding

B.to feed them every two hours

C.to release the animal back to nature

D.to clean them like a doe

【3】Which of the following can best describe Patrick Moore?

    A.warm-hearted and selfless

    B.generous and honest

    C.devoted and loyal

    D.kind and diligent

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Mr. Moore knows every fawn in Animal Nation.

B.mature deer like coming back to Animal Nation after being released.

C.deer saved by Animal Nation are closer to people than others.

D.deer can recognize the one taking care of it.

  • 24、Eight months after China put a 10-year ban on fishing in the Yangtze River, a group of about 10 Yangtze finless porpoises (江豚) were seen in the river of Wuhan, Hubei Province. Their appearance was said to be a result of less interference (干涉) from human activities or an increase food availability.

“Rising water levels during the flood season and the fishing ban may both contribute to this rare animal’s appearance. Without interference from human activities, the finless porpoises might be more active,” said Zhang Xianfeng, an aquatic (水生的) wildlife researcher.

The finless porpoise is widely believed to be an important health indicator of the Yangtze River. Over the past 40 years, its population has declined dramatically due to many factors, such as climate change and habitat loss. In 2013, it was classified as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. However, the population has shown some stability in recent years thanks to joint protection from government organs, research institutes and other social organizations.

Zhang believes it’s a good thing that the public has become more aware of the urgency of saving the finless porpoise and protecting the ecosystem of the Yangtze River. However, the appearance of the finless porpoises cannot necessarily be seen as a sign that the population is increasing. Its total population, around 1,000, is very limited, which makes the chances for them to have babies very slim in such a long river as the Yangtze River.

To preserve biodiversity along the Yangtze River, China imposed a 10-year fishing ban in 332 conservation areas, protecting not only the finless porpoise but also more than 4,300 kinds of aquatic life living in the Yangtze River. The fishing ban, which is crucial to ecological restoration of the whole river, will significantly expand the finless porpoise’s food supply and remove the threat from fishing tools. However, the effect will be known only after three to five years.

【1】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The effect of the 10-year fishing ban.

B.The living conditions of finless porpoises.

C.The necessity of limiting human activities.

D.The reasons for finless porpoises’ appearance.

【2】What has directly affected the birth rate of finless porpoise?

    A.The limited population.

    B.The human interference.

    C.The lack of public awareness.

D.The length of the Yangtze River.

【3】What do we know about the 10-year fishing ban?

A.It was put into effect in Hubei Province.

B.It aims to protect a variety of aquatic life.

C.It increased the number of finless porpoises soon.

D.It forbids human activities along the Yangtze River.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To show the effect of a 10-year fishing ban.

B.To introduce the features of finless porpoises.

C.To record the appearance of finless porpoises.

D.To advocate the protection of the Yangtze River.
