  • 26、Robots are smart. With their computer brains, they help people work in dangerous places or do difficult jobs. Some robots do regular jobs. Bobby, the mail carrier, brings mails to a large office building in Washington D.C. He is one of 250 mail carriers in the United States.

Mr. Leachim, who weighs two hundred pounds and is six feet tall, has some advantages as a teacher. One is that he does not forget details. He knows each child’s name, the parents’ names and what each child knows and needs to know. In addition, he knows each child’s pets and hobbies. Mr. Leachim does not make mistakes. Each child goes and tells him his or her name, then dials an identification number. His computer brain puts each child’s voice and number together. He identifies the children with no mistakes. Then he starts the lesson.

Another advantage is that Mr. Leachim is flexible. If the children need more time to do their lessons they can move switches. In this way they can repeat Mr. Leachim’s lesson over and over again. When the children do a good job, he tells them something interesting about their hobbies. At the end of the lesson the children switch Mr. Leachim off.

【1】The first paragraph of the passage tells us________.

A.human beings are not as smart as robots

B.robots will take the place of man to rule the earth

A.To meet the needs of each student.

B.To talk to the students in different languages.

C.To keep everyone’s interest in his lessons.

D.To introduce more hobbies to the children.

【4】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.There are 250 robot teachers in the United States.

B.Mr. Leachim is run and controlled by electricity.

C.Bobby works in a large office building in Washington D.C.

D.The lessons taught by Mr. Leachim are given on a TV set.

  • 27、Black rhinos (犀牛) have terrible eyesight. Even so, these large African animals can fight against hungry lions and hyenas. With big sword-like horns, their large and thick-skinned body plan has proved to be good enough to survive in a place full of huge predators (捕食性动物). But those protective features are no match for humans with guns.

Today, the species is seriously endangered largely due to illegal hunting. But the rhinos may have an unlikely partner against hunters: the red-billed oxpecker (牛椋鸟). The chatty, sociable birds often hang out on the backs of rhinos, feasting on the ticks (虱子) on their bodies.

“And actually, research has shown that the tick is the favorite diet of an oxpecker. And if they feed on ticks, that is a good thing,” said Plotz, a behavioral ecologist. He suspected that the rhinos put up with them because the oxpeckers make loud alarm calls whenever they see humans approach-giving the rhinos an early warning to flee.

To test whether the oxpeckers do, in fact, act as noisy lookouts, Plotz and his team placed radio transmitters (发送器) in the rhinos horns. The researchers found that rhinos without oxpeckers detected an approaching human only 23 percent of the time, at an average distance of 27 meters. But when oxpeckers were present, the birds warned the rhinos 100 percent of the time. And they sensed the human 61 meters away on average. And the more oxpeckers on the scene, the greater the detection distance— which means the earlier the warning.

It makes sense because the more eyes you have on your back, looking out for you, the more chance that you can pick up anything coming. What we think is going on, fundamentally, is that the rhino is listening to the alarm call. There can be no doubt of that. Listening to oxpecker alarm calls brings a really strong anti-human benefit.

Plotz thinks the oxpeckers may have gradually changed and developed their behavior because it protects their convenient food source. And the more lookouts, the better in what seems like a win-win for both species: the birds thrive and the rhinos survive.

【1】What can we learn about black rhinos?

    A.They have terrible survival skills.

    B.They are almost dying out.

    C.They mainly feast on ticks.

    D.Their biggest threat is lions.

【2】Why can black rhinos stand oxpeckers?

A.They can sense danger with the help of the birds.

B.They can do nothing about the tiresome birds.

C.The birds are main food for black rhinos.

D.The birds help rid rhinos of the ticks on their bodies.

【3】How does the author show oxpeckers’ anti-human benefit?

    A.By giving an example.

    B.By telling a story.

    C.By listing some data.

    D.By asking a question.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

A.The reason for black rhinos’ extinction.

B.Measures possible to protect black rhinos.

C.Some facts related to red-billed oxpeckers.

D.A win-win for black rhinos and oxpeckers.

  • 28、If humans do want to set up communities on the moon or other planets, what will they eat? A new test has begun to see if meat cells can grow.

Growing meat from cells even on Earth isn’t easy. Cells from a cow(though it could be any animal)are fed the things they need to grow, like amino acids and carbohydrate. The cells multiply until muscle tissue forms, and eventually becomes meat that you can eat. This process is called “cultivation (培养)”. The meat is grown in tanks that look more like what you’d find in a brewery than a farm yard. The life-cycle of an animal raised for meat — birth, life and kill — is completely ignored.

“Animal cells grow slowly,” says David Humbird, a chemical engineer. “If bacteria were to get into the cultivation, they would grow much faster from animal cells and they will just take over so you aren’t making the animal cells anymore. You are making bacteria. And you have to throw them away,” says Mr Humbird. “Those cells that are themselves grown on eatable material are going to be sugar, amino acids and water. And the caloric value of the cells that you make will always be less than that. At the best case you could probably recover 25% of the calorie and eat them as food. So the question is, why would you drag all those calorie into space just to waste 75% of them?”

Karen Nyberg is a former astronaut. She says food plays a crucial role in space missions. “Food like powdered milk and that sort of thing comes as a regular source for astronauts, and meat produced in space is just something we don’t have. So anything like that makes us feel great and eases our pressure.” For Ms Nyberg, fresh food and vegetables are vital if humans are expected to be away from Earth for years at a time.

Certainly if humanity is serious about putting people on Mars, how to feed astronauts with nutrient-rich food that doesn’t spoil—and tastes good — is an important and difficult mystery.

【1】What is the second paragraph mainly about?

    A.The taste of lab-grown meat.

B.The reasons for growing meat in space.

C.The potential benefits of growing meat.

D.The process of growing meat from cow cells.

【2】What is David Hum bird’s attitude toward growing meat in space?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Indifferent.

【3】What can we infer from what Karen said?

A.Eating is always a problem for astronauts.

B.Food tastes much better in space than on Earth.

C.Growing meat does good to astronauts’ mental health.

D.Astronauts suffer from mental illnesses after long space tasks.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Can meat be grown in space?

B.Can astronauts enjoy meat in space?

C.Can meat in space be delicious to eat?

D.Can lab-grown meat help tackle climate?

  • 29、I was in a shopping mall recently, and I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from the first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it.

There was a young man in front of me in the line also waiting to be served. The young man handed the servant a twenty-dollar bill and asked for an orange juice as well as a favor. The servant looked at the young man with a little surprise, not fully understanding him. The young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Later, there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.

As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I thought he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for the old man as well. Thinking of the happy smiles on the old man’s face, I felt how worthwhile it is to help others.

【1】The underlined word “favor” in Para. 2 refers to________.

    A. passing the young man a cup of orange juice

    B. buying lunch for the old man

    C. exchanging meals with the old man

    D. giving the juice to the old man

【2】Which of the following can be used to describe the young man?

    A. Kind and considerate   B. Generous and proud.

    C. Rich and friendly.   D. Humorous and helpful.

【3】 In the author’s opinion, the young man asked the servant to take the juice to the old man so that____________.

    A. the old man could probably accept it

    B. he would become famous for his good deed

    C. more people would be inspired to do good deeds

    D. he would become a friend of the servant
