26、Growing up in Puerto Rico, our family was no different from so many others. My parents got married after my father came back when the war ended. Both of my parents were struggling with the hard economic realities of the time. But somehow, they found time to cherish those cultural values that shaped our everyday life.
In our daily life, we celebrated together with our friends or family members every birthday, every graduation, and all holidays with music and dancing, and typical foods. When we visited our family in the countryside—a trip that took about two hours in a car, with five children fighting as to who would get a window or the front seat —we would break into song, and somehow the trip would turn into one full of happiness and fun. We would sing not only interesting children’s songs but also beautiful love songs — songs about the love of our country though we didn’t understand the meaning of the words many times.
I came to Philadelphia for the first time in 1973 to do a residency(实习) in family medicine. I remember the many hours of work. I was facing issues of life and death and suffering the clearly social unfairness and issues of poverty and race. These were all worsened by my feeling of cultural differences.
An important turning point in my life happened one Saturday night when I attended a concert of Puerto Rico singer and composer Antonio Caban Vale. The music showed my familiar rhythms, and the words spoke to my heart. I had found a space to express, celebrate, and share my culture in Philadelphia. Therefore, I believe diversity is seen as an advantage and not as a disadvantage. As a Puerto Rican, I am a mixture of races and I believe in my strength because of this.

27、I was born into a family of five children. As the youngest child, I didn’t have many new clothes. Though my parents worked very hard, we could hardly make ends meet. The only time we would receive new clothes was at Christmas.
The family across the street lived a much better life. They just had two daughters and they were often seen wearing new dresses. The younger girl named Anna was of my age. One afternoon, she walked on the street wearing a beautiful white dress. She looked like an angel in that dress. I, together with many little girls, followed her. We just couldn’t keep our eyes off her dress. We all wished we would have such a dress one day!
That day, after coming back, I told my mom that I wanted a dress like that. My mom frowned(皱眉) she thought such a beautiful dress like that must cost an arm and a leg, but my mom kept that in mind. She worked five days a week at that time, but when Christmas was getting close, she worked even on every Saturday.
However, several days before Christmas, I changed my mind. It was Anna’s birthday that day and I was invited to her home with some other girls. After that party, I asked if I could try on her white dress. “Of course,” she said, “and you can take it if you like it.” I couldn’t believe my ears. How could she give such a beautiful dress to someone else? After trying it on, I knew why.
The dress looked beautiful, but it was uncomfortable to wear. As a matter of fact, my back was quite itchy(痒的) after I put it on. From that day on, I stopped admiring what others had. They may not be as good aswe think.

29、Scientists since Galileo have tried to understand other planetary (行星的) bodies from an earthly angle. Recently, however, researchers have recognized planetary exploration as a two-way street. They have realized that exploring space can also bring us back insights about Earth's past, its complicated relationship with life and our planet's future.
Planetary bodies can help to show how frequent Earth-like bodies are in the universe and what, exactly, makes Earth so different from the average planet. "By studying the variety of outcomes that we see on other planetary bodies and understanding the variables that shape each planet, we can learn more about how things might have happened on Earth in the past," explained Sonia Tikoo-Schantz, a geophysics professor at Stanford Earth.
Consider, she suggested, how studies of Venus and Earth have helped scientists better understand plate tectonics (板块结构学). "Venus and Earth are about the same size, and they probably formed under fairly similar conditions, "Tikoo-Schantz said. But while Earth has tectonic plates moving around and abundant water, Venus has a mostly solid ground, no water on its surface and a very dry atmosphere. "From time to time, Venus has some kind of disaster that has almost destroyed everything, followed by a new appearance of much of the world," Tikoo-Schantz said, "but we don't see this continuous steady state tectonic environment that we have on Earth."
Scientists are increasingly convinced that water may explain much of the difference. "We know that subduction (俯冲带) of tectonic plates brings water down into the Earth," Tikoo-Schantz said. "That water helps smooth the upper layer of the earth, and helps convection (对流) happen, which helps drive plate tectonics."
This approach-using planetary bodies as grand experiments-can be applied to answer more questions about how Earth works. "Imagine you want to see how gravity might affect certain processes," Lapotree, a PhD student at Caltech said. "Going to other planets can let you run an experiment where you can observe what happens with a lower or higher gravity - something that's impossible to do on Earth."
