26、How I failed my Oxford interview
As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I’d made a mistake. “You think Jane Austen is… soft?” the man opposite me asked in disbelief. Then, he and his colleague took turns to challenge my claim, finishing each others sentences as they stressed that Austen’s novels were, in fact, savage.
“I just mean …” I said in a bright voice, trying to keep the tone light, “that she’s not as biting as Virginia Woolf.”
The two professors this idea around, too, like a couple of cats toying with a frightened bird — giving specific examples of how Austen’s work was, on the contrary, more biting than Woolf’s. With no more defensive action to take. I simply smiled and said, “Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?” And at that moment, my dreams of going to Oxford University disappeared in a puff of smoke.
Part of my problem was a lack of confidence. Even though I was a straight A student and had prepared for the interview to the best of my ability. I wasn’t a skilled debater. When faced with two experts who told me that I was wrong, instead of defending myself. I rolled over and accepted defeat.
To pass the interview, you need more than confidence, of course. You also need a burning passion for your subject, not just a keen interest. In other words, don’t put comments on your personal statement that you’re not prepared to back up in person.
So, months later, I already knew the contents of my thin envelop when it appeared on my doormat. Naturally, I felt a pang of disappointment. I had wanted to go to Oxford since I was 13. I used to look up images of my favorite college with the same eagerness of a bride-to-be browsing wedding dresses.
Ultimately, I didn’t have what it took — but, looking back, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Instead of going to Oxford, I found a university that was a better fit for my interests. I loved my eclectic (兼收并蓄的) course, where I could write an essay comparing Jane Eyre to 50 Shades of Grey.
Failing my Oxford interview also provided a valuable life lesson. I’m not more confident in my opinions, more passionate when it comes to debate, and I try to back up my point with hard evidence. What’s more. I have never since ended a discussion by giving a foolish smile and saying, “Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?”

27、Going to the zoo is an all-time favorite activity for children and families. However, there are some who argue against keeping wild animals in zoos for a number of reasons. In order to make a decision, we must consider the arguments for and against keeping wild animals in zoos.
【1】We can observe animals at close range and learn more about them than we can from books and TV. It also provides an opportunity to promote the conservation of endangered species. In addition, zoos allow scientists to study animal behavior more easily. This helps them to come up with better ways of protecting animals from harm in their natural habitat.
【2】Many zoos do not have large enough enclosures (围栏)to keep animals comfortable. The animals have limited freedom to move around.
Another thing we need to take into consideration is the cost of maintaining a zoo. A lot of funds are needed to run a zoo. Money is needed to stock the zoo with all kinds of animals. Staff must be hired and trained to take care of each species of animal.【3】Special spaces need to be built to house each type of animal. More staff are needed to clean and maintain the zoo grounds. Even with all the money and effort spent in keeping animals in a zoo, these animals are still not getting the best.【4】
In conclusion, while zoos do have some advantages in the areas of education and conservation, it is cruel and selfish to keep animals in an unnatural prison.【5】For conservation and research, we can set up sanctuaries (保护区)like the Sepilok orangutan sanctuary in Sabah. It is kinder to leave the animals in their natural home — the wild.
A.This is a very big difference.
B.The animals need food and medical care.
C.If you want to see animals, I advise you to go on a safari (猎游).
D.The money and effort are better used for conservation programs.
E.On the other hand, keeping animals in zoos is similar to a prison sentence.
F.One benefit of zoos is that they are useful for educating people about animals.
G.Many animals are mistreated because their caregivers lack the knowledge of caring for them.
28、New research has shown that you might not just be feeling blue; you may also be seeing it differently. Your mood may affect how you see the world around you, according to a new study. A team of researchers has proved that sadness could have an effect on the way we see colors.
The team, led by psychology researcher Christopher Thorstenson of the University of Rochester, found that people who had a sad mood were less accurate in identifying colors on the blue-yellow axis (轴), compared to people who weren’t feeling sad.
“We were already deeply familiar with how often people use color terms to describe common phenomena, like mood, even when these concepts seem unrelated,” Thorstenson said in a statement. “We thought maybe a reason why these metaphors (比喻) appear was that there really was a connection between mood and identifying colors in a different way.”
Thorstenson and his team are not the first to identify a link between a depressed mood and a difference in recognition. In 2010, Emanuel Bubl and his team at Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg in Germany first proved a link between mood and identifying colors. This was supported by a 2013 paper by Johnson Fam of the University of Singapore.
The team conducted two studies. In the first, 127 participants were chosen randomly to watch one of two video clips, which had been proved in previous studies to feel either sadness or amusement. They didn’t do that in a specific order. The entire group was then tasked with identifying the colors in 48 continued color changes. The group that had been shown the sad clip was measurably worse at identifying colors along the blue-yellow axis.
For the second study, 130 participants were randomly assigned to watch either a sad clip or a neutral (中性的) one. The sadness group showed reduced ability to identify colors along the blue-yellow axis than the neutral group.
【1】If one _______, the colors he sees might be different from those in others’ eyes.
A. is in a good mood B. has an eye illness
C. attends a speech D. doesn’t feel happy
【2】Who were the first to find out the link between mood and identifying colours?
A. Thorstenson and Johnson. B. Thorstenson and his team.
C. Johnson and his team. D. Emaneuel and his team.
【3】The sadness group in the second study _______.
A. felt happy when watching the video
B. performed better than the other
C. were less able to identify some colours

29、If you read the news about honeybee survival, it’s all very confusing.
The Hoover Institution’s Dr. Henry Miller notes, “The reality is that honeybee populations are not declining. According to the U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistics, the world’s honeybee population rose to 80 million colonies (群落) in 2011 from 50 million in 1960.”Meanwhile, Jennifer Sass of the Natural Resources Defense Council points out. “The number of managed honeybee colonies in the U.S. has dropped from 4 million hives (蜂群) in 1970 to 2.5 million today”
Surprisingly, both of these claims are correct. Miller points to the “global” commercial honeybee hive count, which has grown considerably. Sass points to domestic colony numbers only, which have in fact declined.
Far more bees are farmed for making honey than for pollination (传粉) services. Since more honey is now made overseas than it was in the past, more hives are kept overseas, and fewer in the United States and Europe. And the global number of commercial hives and the amount of honey they produce have grown to meet the demands of an expanding world population. Such shifts offer no evidence of a honeybee hive “crisis”. They simply represent the market forces of supply and demand.
The FAO data also clarifies that national or even regional declines in the size of the managed honeybee population cannot prove claims of a global pollinator decline or a pollination crisis. However, it emphasizes that solutions to those problems must be motivated locally, rather than globally.
Solutions will follow only if we take a non-subjective look at the issues, so we can address them appropriately rather than have a crisis mentality. As I highlight in a recent post for TheHill, a big part of the solution lies at the very local level: with the beekeepers, farmers, and communities that surround them.
【1】What makes the news confusing?
A.Various species.
B.Contradictory conclusions.
C.Complicated statistics.
D.Different effects.
【2】What contributes to the growth of commercial hives?
A.The claims of the FAO.
B.The shift of honey export.
C.The more services of pollination.
D.The increasing demands for honey.
【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the honeybee population issue?
A.Objective.
B.Supportive.
C.Confused.
D.Doubtful.
【4】What is true about the solution to the issue of honeybee population?
A.It lies at the global motivation.
B.It causes a crisis mentality.
C.It arises with a non- subjective view on the problem.
D.It highlights the communities of the local farmers.
