二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again.

Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death.

Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.

Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.

The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains(M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. It takes beneficiaries who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.

Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.”

【1】What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about?

A.Jackson was tired of ball games.

B.Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life.

C.Jackson was well respected for his survival skills.

D.Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors.

【2】What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in the third paragraph?

    A.Give up.

    B.Figure out.

    C.Move on.

    D.Look through.

    【3】Why did Jackson start M2M?

    A.To educate sports lovers.

B.To raise money for the disabled.

    C.To encourage safe mountain climbing.

D.To help people with similar experiences.

【4】What kind of person is Jackson probably?

    A.Enthusiastic but impolite.

    B.Creative but impatient.

    C.Adventurous and inspiring.

    D.Responsible and humorous.

  • 27、From VOA learning English, this is the Health & Lifestyle report.

Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to let it cool down a bit before drinking. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer.

In fact, the United Nations' cancer research agency decided to list hot drinks with lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes as  “possibly carcinogenic.” In other words, each one could cause cancer.

Researchers at IARC(The International Agency for Research on Cancer) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食管).

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, researchers said “this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.”

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60 degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers.

In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as “possibly carcinogenic.” WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.

Christopher Wild is the director of the IARC. When he spoke with the AFP news agency, he said the results “suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.”

But how common is esophageal cancer? Worldwide, it is the eighth most common cancer. Cancer of the esophagus killed about 400,000 people in 2012.

    I’m Anna Matteo.

2According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the possible cause of cancer?

    A. Lead   B. Petrol

    C. Exhaust fumes   D. Drinks.

    3The new research tells us________

    A. Drinking coffee may cause cancer.

    B. Smoking and alcoholic drinks are related with esophageal cancer.

    C. Esophageal cancer is the most common cancer.

    D. Hot drinks have something to do with esophageal cancer.

4The relationship between “coffee” and “beverages” is just like________

    A. Rose and flowers   B. Tea and milk

    C. Fish and water   D. Cancer and doctor

  • 28、The idea that red means stop and green means go affects more than just traffic light colors. We have been taught from a young age that red means danger, while green means safety. 【1】For something we have to look at every day, why couldn’t they have been prettier colors? You’re about to find out.

Before there were traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railroad companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go and green to mean caution. But train conductors ran into a problem with the color white meaning go — bright white could easily be mistaken for stars at night. 【2】 It has been that way ever since.

【3】 That means that as it travels through the air, it gets diffused (分散) less than other colors, so it can be seen from a greater distance. For example, think about how the light turns red as the sun sets. Even though the human eye is most sensitive to a yellowish-green highlighter color, it can see red from further away. But this could happen by chance. It’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural connection of red with things like blood. 【4】

Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is noticeable the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away — a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop.

However, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. 【5】 Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school areas, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the color. Keep these safe driving tips in the back of your mind whenever you see a yellow light.

A.Railway companies eventually moved to the color green for go.

B.It could be a mix of all three!

C.But why were those particular colors chosen for traffic lights?

D.Employ these driving rules and know that traffic lights have certainly come a long way.

E.Red is the color with the longest wavelength.

F.When you’re impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don’t get mad.

G.Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born.

  • 29、Making Your Memories Last

“My father wrote me a lovely letter before he died. It is the most cherished thing I own.” Have you ever heard someone say so?

As you all know, your houses, cars, jewels or even money are your financial properties, which are relatively easy to pass along because they are in a physical form. But don’t let your possessions become the only representations of your life. Your thoughts and life journey are equally valuable. 【1】

Studies have shown that kids who know about their family’s past are more empathetic, have better coping skills and higher self-esteem.【2】So how can you turn those feelings, thoughts, and insights into something that can be passed on? These tips can help get you started.

    Create a catalogue

Before you begin, check what you’ve got. If you want to pass along family stories or wisdom, list everything available to you, such as photos and letters from your parents.【3】 You could, for example, interview your parents about their lives or write an article about your academic progress.

    Make a plan

Once you know what you’ve got and what you need, make a list that details how you’re going to produce what you’re missing and how to record it. 【4】You don’t want the book of your life stories lost in an attic!

    【5】

You can’t possibly get everything done at once. By taking active steps and starting with the easiest-to-create projects, you can bring memories to life. For example, you can write a short article about your childhood or film a two-minute video about your wedding day. When you see the results of these smaller projects, you may well be inspired to create more.

    A.Take simple steps

    B.Get more specific

C.And it’s also significant to consider how to keep it.

D.Then figure out what you still need to add to your collection.

E.For older adults, passing on their life stories helps decrease depression.

F.They become the foundation on which family members build their lives.

G.But they can always get a head start equipped with those precious memories.
