二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Life began in Hawaii in 1985 for musical celebrity Bruno Mars. His dad, Pete, was a percussionist (打击乐手) and his mom, Bernadette, was a singer and dancer, so it seemed natural that Bruno would one day become a musician. At age 4, Bruno officially joined in a show, and audiences adored him. That early introduction to show business helped him develop confidence. He says, “Performing from such a young age just got me so comfortable on stage. Growing up performing — that was normal for me.”

After graduating from high school, Bruno decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. It wasn’t easy, though. He was used to performing regularly as a musician in Honolulu, Hawaii. But LA’s competitive atmosphere was nothing like that in Hawaii. “It’s not like in movies, where you walk into a record company and you’re given all these great songs. You have to write what the world is going to want to hear. I learned that the hard way here in LA,” Bruno said.

Though the enticement to give up was great, he never did. Bruno found that he could make money and become established by writing songs for famous singers. In 2010 Bruno caught a lucky break when he was asked to record one of his songs. It rocketed to the top of the charts. That same year he released his first original solo single, Just the Way You Are, which also hit number one. The song’s success brought Bruno instant fame and star status.

Since then Bruno Mars has received numerous music awards and honors. He has sold more than 130 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists ever. Many of his fans and peers consider him a musical genius and one of the world’s best performers.

【1】Why was Bruno’s career development hard in LA?

    A.He was lacking in confidence.

    B.Competition in LA was fiercer.

    A.Instruction.

    B.Command.

    C.Inspiration.

    D.Temptation.

【3】What made Bruno’s career take off?

A.Famous singers’ songs written by him.

B.His rich experience in performing on stage.

C.Songs he was required to record for himself.

    D.Famous singers’ direction and recommendation.

【4】What’s the main idea of this passage?

    A.Awards won by Bruno Mars.

    B.Popular songs by Bruno Mars.

    C.Bruno Mars’ struggle in LA.

    D.Bruno Mars’ road to fame.

  • 27、Until recently, several lines of evidence — from fossils genetics, and archaeology — suggested that humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia (the land of Europe and Asia) about 60,000 years ago, quickly replacing other early human species, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, that they may have met along the way.

However, a series of recent discoveries, including 100,000-year-old human teeth found in a cave in China, have clouded this straightforward statement. And the latest find, a prehistoric jawbone at the Misliya Cave in Israel dating back to nearly 200,000 years ago, which is almost twice as old as any Homo sapiens (智人) remains discovered outside Africa, where our species was thought to have originated from, has added new and unexpected twist.

The find suggests that there were multiple waves of migration across Europe and Asia and could also mean that modern humans in the Middle East were interacting, and possibly mating, with other human species for tens of thousands of years. “Misliya breaks the mould (模式) of existing assumptions of the timing of the first known Homo sapiens in these regions,” said Chris Stringer, head of human origins at the Natural History Museum in London. “It’s important in removing long-lasting-constraint (限制) on our thinking.”

Prof. Hershkovitz, who led the work at Tel Aviv University said, “What Misliya tells us is that modern humans left Africa not 100,000 years ago, but 200,000 years ago. This is revolution in the way we understand the evolution of our own species.” He also added that the record now indicates that humans probably travelled beyond the African continent whenever the climate allowed it. “I don’t believe there was one big departure from Africa,” he said. “I think that throughout hundreds of thousands of years humans were coming in and out of Africa all the time.”

The discovery means that modern humans were potentially meeting and interacting during a longer period with other ancient human groups, providing more opportunity for cultural and biological exchanges. It also raises interesting questions about the fate of the earliest modern human pioneers. Genetic data from modern-day populations around the world strongly suggest that everyone outside Africa can trace their ancestors back to a group that left around 60,000 years ago. So, the inhabitants of the Misliya Cave are probably not the ancestors of anyone alive today, and scientists can only guess why their branch of the family tree came to an end.

【1】What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 1?

A.Early human species living in Europe.

    B.Neanderthals and Denisovans.

C.People first moving from Africa into Eurasia.

D.Ancient people living in Africa all the time.

【2】What does the Misliya discovery suggest?

A.Our ancestors were powerful and kind of aggressive.

B.Our ancestors left Africa much earlier than thought.

C.The origins of modern humans are from Europe.

D.Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans once lived together.

【3】What can be learned from Prof Hershkovitz’s words?

A.Climate was a big factor in human migration from Africa.

B.There was a large-scale human migration from Africa.

C.Human migration was occasional in Africa 200,000 years ago.

D.The Misliya find is against our understanding of human evolution.

【4】What can we infer about those living in Misliya 200, 000 years ago according to the last paragraph?

A.They were ancestors of people living in China.

B.They left evidence for their mysterious disappearance in history.

C.They probably contributed little to present-day people genetically.

D.They could be traced by their remains left on their travelling route.

  • 28、We all have our ways of marking time. As a photographer, my life is measured from one story to the next. My oldest son was born in the middle of a long story about the Endangered Species Act. My daughter came along with a pack of gray wolves.

Twenty stories later, though, it’s the story in Alaska that I’ll remember best. It was the story about the loss of wilderness and the story during which my wife Kathy got cancer. That’s the one that made time stand still. I stopped taking pictures on the day when she found that tumor (肿瘤). Cruelly, it was Thanksgiving. By Christmas, she had become very weak. Some days she was so sick she couldn’t watch TV.

Early examination saves time. But ours was not early. By the time you can feel it yourself, it’s often bigger than the doctor want it to be.

Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this terrible disease, unfair as storm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to change us, for good. We learn to simplify, enjoying what we have instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t. Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is a new way of life and new way of seeing, all from the cancer.

In the end each of us has so little time. We have less of it than we can possibly imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy’s cancer has not spread, and her prognosis (诊断) is good, we try to make it all count now, enjoying every part of every day.

I’ve picked up my camera again. I watch the sky, searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come, Kathy and I gather our children and take the time to catch snowflakes (雪花) on our tongues. After all, this is good. This is what we’re living for.

【1】As a photographer, the author used to ______

    A. leave his daughter with a pack of gray wolves

    B. devote much more to his career than his family

    C. miss a great many important historical moments

    D. express his love for his family in a special way

【2】Why did the author decide to stop taking pictures?

    A. To cure his own disease.

    B. To leave the wilderness alone.

    C. To seek a better position.

    D. To spend more time with his wife.

【3】What is the biggest change the cancer has brought to the author?

    A. He takes his work more seriously

    B. He has become a stranger to his children.

    C. He treasured every bit of time with his family

    D. He focuses more on medical care.

【4】The author and his family catch snowflakes on their tongues probably because ______.

    A. they regard that as a way to enjoy life

    B. snowflakes are what they feed on

    C. the snowflakes taste very good

    D. there is beautiful light in the snowflakes

  • 29、“Baby signing” classes established to improve language skills actually make little difference to children’s development, according to new research. Scholars claimed there was no evidence that the lessons—in which babies are taught simple gestures to communicate their everyday needs—enable children to talk quicker than others.

In a threeyear study, it was claimed that the method could make mothers more responsive to their children’s behaviors but failed to actually increase babies’ vocabulary. An active home environment in which parents regularly talk to their children was much more effective, researchers warned. The findings will cast doubt on the movement—born in the United States—which has proved hugely popular among middleclass parents.

Baby signing is now a multimillion pound industry, with thousands of mothers and fathers paying for classes, books and DVDs. Young children are taught simple gestures for words and phrases to communicate their everyday needs, such as “milk” “more” “all gone” “food” and “tired”. It is claimed that the technique brings great benefits, including improving the relationship between mother and child, helping language development and even increasing a child’s intelligence.

But research from Hertfordshire University has found no evidence that using baby signing helps to improve their language development. The scholars added, “Baby signing has become big business and mothers, particularly firsttime mums or less confident parents, feel the pressure to do it. Some even think ‘if I don’t do it and everyone else does, I must be a bad mother’.”

Nevertheless, baby signing experts barely sustained the findings. Wendy Moat, 45, who has been running baby signing classes for three years, said that the classes encouraged speech development, and may help develop a higher IQ. She said, “So many mums say that their children talk so well because they did baby signing when they were babies. Parents wouldn’t say it if they didn’t believe it.”

【1】Which of the following may help improve children’s language skills?

    A.Using simple words and phrases.

B.Talking to them as much as possible.

C.Buying them more books and DVDs.

    D.Creating a serious home environment.

【2】According to Paragraph 4, some new mothers choose baby signing classes in that________.

    A.they are influenced by others

B.they are sure of the effects of them

C.they don't want to be looked down upon

D.they don't know how to teach their children

【3】The underlined word “sustained” in the last paragraph means “ ”.

    A.obtained

    B.sought

    C.approved of

    D.figured out

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.How to teach children to communicate effectively.

B.Baby signing classes increase children’s intelligence.

C.How to improve the relationship between mother and child.

D.Baby signing classes fail to improve children’s language skills.

When my father reported that he had just purchased a new house in new housing development, we were all overjoyed. For a long time, he had wished to purchase his own home. My parents had been living in several rental houses since they married. Finally, his dream had come true.

We began moving our belongings into our new home on a bright and sunny Sunday morning. My father hired a lorry to transfer our goods, and I was amazed at how much we had. The lorry had to make three journeys before most of our belongings arrived at our new home. I enjoyed sitting in the back of the lorry while it made the journeys. My parents, grandmother, elder sister, and I are the only members of our family. Nonetheless, the number of goods, both necessary and useless, was shocking.

We had a busy day loading the items onto the lorry and then unloading them at our new home, but that was not the end of the story. We had to move the things into the house and arrange them properly before we could call the house a home.

Our new house was a single—story house, the fourth in a row of identical houses. It contained three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, two bathrooms, a small kitchen, a small front porch, and an even smaller garden. Modern houses are extremely narrow for room, but it was better than nothing. In any case, it was a significant improvement over our prior home, which was much smaller than the new one.

The kitchen was the first area we started organizing things. We needed to take care of our stomach before we could do any more work, so my mother set about creating her first meal in her brand-new kitchen, preparing the greatest tasting instant lunch I’d ever tasted.

We moved on to the rest of our belongings after lunch. My parents got the largest bedroom, my grandmother and sister got the second largest, and I got the tiniest, right close to the kitchen. I was totally overjoyed. For the first time in my life, I got my own room, and it even had a ceiling fan to keep me cool.
