As of March 21, all forms of physical punishment against children, such as slacking, hitting, slapping and shaking is illegal in walks. The law change is hailed as “historic” by the Welsh government and a number of child protection champions, who call for England to follow suit. “Today is a historic moment for children and their rights in walks as we make physically punishing children a thing of the past,” said Julie organ, the deputy minister for social services, who has campaigned for the law change for more than two decades.

According to Welsh Government surveys, parents of young children in walks have shown a significant shift in attitude over the past decade. For example, in 2019, 70 % of parents and guardians of young children in walks disagreed that it is sometimes necessary to shack a child, compared with 39 % in a similar survey in 2018.

“In walks, as in more than 60 countries around the world, we will no longer tolerate physical violence against children,” said via Laing, the policy and public affairs manager at NSPCC Cymru walks. “Until now, children were the only group in our society who it was acceptable to strike in certain circumstanced. We don't allow the physical punishment of adults or animals, so it is absurd that we have for so long with children.”

28、In the countryside in Fuzhou, Fujian, there is a girl, her little brother, their grandma and a cat named Hua Juan. In the eyes of Hua Juan, the grandma treats the boy and the girl very differently — she saves milk for the boy and feeds him as if he were a baby, not paying much attention to the girl. One day, Hua Juan falls asleep and starts to have a dream. Everything begins to change.

This is the story told in the short film I’m Hua Juan, which explores a heavy topic -the traditional preference for sons over daughters. The film helped 18-year- old Zhu Manlin win the best director award at the 2021 International Teen Short Film Festival. The competition aims to encourage middle school students internationally to look at the world around them through images and pay attention to their position within it.

Zhu, a student at Fuzhou Senior High School, said she got the idea of the film from stories she heard. “Gender (性别) preference is still a common thing. Three out of the five members of our filming team have such families with older sisters and younger brothers,” said Zhu. “Many people may take it for granted, but not for a cat. I tell the story from the viewpoint of a cat to encourage the audience to take another look at reality.”

As the director and photographer, Zhu together with her teammates spent about two months writing the script (剧本), shooting the video and editing. She used several key scenes to show the grandma’s preference for the boy: more meat in his bowl, gentler words and interesting toys, while the girl is ignored and accompanied only by Hua Juan. The strong comparison can help viewers better emotionally connect with the girl and reflect on the unfavorable situation of other girls in the same situation. Zhu also set a scene in which the girl looks through the crack of a door and sees a part from the film Sister, which describes An Ran, a girl who struggles to pursue her own dream while having to raise her younger brother after their parents died in a car crash. “I want fewer girls to have to bear such burdens as An Ran and instead bravely fight for their own rights,” said Zhu.

While the theme is realistic, the visuals are artistic. In the film, real life is in black and white while dreams are colorful. Zhu also shot the film in a square format to give it an unusual feeling as well as a sense of seriousness. She wants viewers to focus on the main story, using close-up shots to resonate with the emotions of the young actors while ignoring other unimportant factors.

Zhu said her favorite director is Lee Chang-dong from South Korea, who cares about reality but also stays poetic. “I wish I could make such films one day,” she said.

29、   Japanese officials say they are pleased with the quality of the asteroid (小行星) material collected by a spacecraft and returned to Earth.

Last week, officials from Japan described the samples (样品), which were collected from the Ryugu asteroid in July 2019. Ryugu sits more than 300 million kilometers from Earth. Japan’s unpiloted Hayabusa2 spacecraft removed the material after making a hole into the asteroid.

The space agency said the July 2019 mission (任务) aimed to collect samples from below the surface of Ryugu. During an earlier operation in February 2019, Hayabusa2 collected material from a different part of the asteroid. The second collection effort resulted in sample pieces as big as 1 centimeter. The black material looked similar to charcoal and was very hard. It did not break apart when picked up or poured into another container.

Earlier this month, space officials described the samples Hayabusa2 removed on its first mission as smaller, sandy pieces. They were collected from the surface of Ryugu. Hayabusa2 was launched in December 2014 and arived near Ryugu in June 2018. The Japanese space mission aims to use the samples to learn more about how our solar system formed.

To get the second set of samples in July, Hayabusa2 used an impactor to knock the asteroid’s surface. The aim was to collect material unaffected by space radiation or other environmental conditions. The size differences suggest different hardness of the bedrock of the asteroid. One possibility is that the place of the second touchdown was a hard bedrock and larger particles broke and entered the container.

Hayabusa2 is now on another mission to a smaller asteroid, called 1998KY26. The Japanese government expects the aircraft to take 11 years to reach that asteroid. Hayabusa2’s new mission aims to study possible ways to prevent large meteorites (陨石) from hitting Earth.
