26、 Today, when we read books, road signs and posters, it’s probably hard to imagine that only half a century ago, about 40 percent of the world’s adults were still illiterate (文盲的), according to data from UNESCO. In response to this situation, UNESCO decided to name Sept. 8 as International Literacy Day, starting from 1967.
Every year, the day is celebrated to stress the importance of literacy and the progress that has been made, which itself is huge—in 2019, the global adult literacy rate rose to 86 percent, while the youth literacy rate was as high as 91 percent, according to UNESCO.
This raises a question: If the mission to promote literacy has basically been accomplished, why do we still celebrate this day? The truth is that the definition of “literacy” keeps changing. For example, the theme for 2007 and 2008 International Literacy Day was “Literacy and health”, which targeted people’s ignorance of diseases like HIV and malaria (疟疾). For 2017, the focus was on “Literacy in a digital world”, because not knowing anything about the Internet in today’s world is just like lacking basic reading abilities in the 1960s—it’s the “new illiteracy”.
The focus for this year’s International Literacy Day is “Literacy and skills development”. But the skills in question are not job-specific skills, such as those required to be an electrician or a chef. Instead, the focus will be on “transferable (可转移的) skills”—communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity, to name a few. These are the things that allow us to do our job well—any job.

27、SMART Goal
The SMART goal is one of the most valuable methods used by high achievers today to realize their life goals. SMART is an acronym (首字母缩略词) that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. 【1】
Every goal ought to be specific. Being clear about your goals and expectations is the first step in reaching them. 【2】 For example, “I will start planning toward retirement” is vague (含糊的). Instead, you could say, “I will start planning toward retirement by building up a nest egg (储备金).” This is more specific. When you are specific about your goal, it’s easier for you to identify all its components and work accordingly toward achieving it.
【3】 If you can’t measure something, you can’t tell if you’re performing well or if you’re off track. Setting measurable goals lets you evaluate your performance and stay on track.
Goals should be achievable and realistic. 【4】 It’s also important not to get carried away and use unreachable goals as motivators. Allow yourself to feel motivated by the satisfaction of achievement and real progress.
Each goal has to be time-bound. 【5】 Actually, it’s incredibly important to make your goals time-bound. The act of having deadlines set for your goals is a motivation that drives you into action. Without a deadline, it is not possible for you to know if you’re making headway with your goals.
A.Your goals must be measurable.
B.That is because your goals are not specific enough.
C.It is the final letter of SMART that is often ignored.
D.When goals are too wide or vague, they are easy to miss.
E.To make your SMART goal work, use the following tips.
F.You may wonder if this is achievable in the given time frame.
G.It’s important to set goals that are within realistic capabilities.
28、 We shouldn’t judge a person by their appearance but we do. In fact, the experts say that when we meet someone for the first time we make a decision about what that person is like in three seconds. 【1】 One of the most important things we look at is clothes, but it isn't the brand of clothes that people wear that is important. The important thing is to wear the right clothes for the right places.
Schools have always understood this and a lot of them ask their students to wear a uniform. Why? A lot of teachers think a uniform makes students feel that they are part of their school and that their form helps them to be serious about their studies. 【2】 If all the students wear uniforms, they can’t judge each other because of their clothes. It also stops gossips about who or what is fashionable.
【3】 We all have fixed ideas about what the people in a certain job should wear. If we visit a doctor, we hope to see respectable clothes under the doctor’s white coat. 【4】 Police officers wear uniforms to make themselves easily identifiable to non-police officers. In fact, a lot of companies have dress codes for their staff because they know that the customers hope to see them dressed in certain types of clothes.
But can our clothes really tell people what we are like? 【5】 When people see us in the right clothes, they think we are serious about what we are doing. Furthermore, if we are clean, smart and polite, people will believe us a lot.
A. Maybe not, but they can show our attitude to what we are doing at the moment.
B. Some of the teachers hold different opinions.
C. But what do we look at?
D. Teachers say that uniforms can help in other ways too.
E. Our clothes stand for our attitude.
F. However, it is not only schools that want people to dress in a certain way.
G. When we go into a bank we expect the staff to wear suits or dresses.

Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a ship out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stages of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed an open-heart operation. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.
The night before my operation, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed, praying (祈祷) and thinking about the events in my life. I remembered how I had loved Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago...
The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”
The store owner and his wife helped me wrap (包) some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with shining brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.
The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa thank you from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but they, and the other folks I met in town, helped give Huron a lifelong place in my heart. A heart that now needed fixing, badly.
