二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Some of the most attractive pictures to come out of the Alaska earthquake are the photos that show slope (斜坡)failures, in which parts of formerly solid hills caved in,tore or let loose. And if there happened to be a road or building on top of the slopes that failed, the result was horrible.

Slopes can fail without earthquakes, as the result of pouring rain qr w:eathering. But the shaking caused by a quake — particularly a large one like what occurred near Anchorage on Friday — can either speed up the process or create entirely new failures that wouldn't have otherwise happened.

Several slope failures were documented in the Anchorage area in the hours after the earthquake Friday, the most interesting of which was on Vine Road southwest of Wasilla. It’s as if someone came along with a large destroying ball and dropped it on Vine Road, which wrinkled like a broken egg.

Scientists seemed surprised at how many slope failures occurred as a result of the 7.0-magnitude (震级)quake. The center of the quake was deep, at 27 miles below the surface — a key reason why the damage in Anchorage was relatively light. Such an earthquake would be expected to produce shaking over a large area, but probably with reasonably modest top ground accelerations, Friday’s earthquake would certainly be felt, but the surface of Earth wouldn't be moving badly enough to produce widespread landslides.

Photos from Alaska show a lot of lateral (横向的)spread, in which the ground tears open. Whatever is on top of the ground at the place it tears in half is also torn in half afterwards, like highways or buildings. The buildings surrounding the spread are also at risk of damage because of the force of the ground spreading out away from the tear. There’s also documentation of block spread,in which part of the ground breaks off a hill and slides away mostly perfect.

【1】What do we know about slope failures?

    A.They may cause earthquakes.

B.They usually happen with a road on top.

    C.They always happen with earthquakes.

D.They may pull parts of the hills apart

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A.Earthquakes have great effect on slope failures.

B.Most slope failures occur after the pouring rain.

C.Earthquakes result in slope failures immediately.

D.Slope failures occur mainly with large earthquakes.

【3】What did the scientists think of the Alaska earthquake Friday?

A.It produced shaking over a large area.

B.It caused fewer slope failures than expected.

C.It wasn’t felt for its deep center.

    D.It didn’t produce landslides.

【4】In which circumstance can we find the ground slides down a hill almost unbroken?

    A.Land slides.

    B.Slope failures.

    C.Lateral spread.

    D.Block spread.

  • 27、Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However ,the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me around at the carnival. He did not let me down.

Well, the carnival is all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its origins in Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being conquered, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here.   Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals(和声).It’s the kind of music that you couldn’t help dancing to. And I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, I couldn’t help moving my hips and shoulders.

Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come.

So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome.   We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.

【1】How did the author feel once she arrived at the carnival?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Excited.

    D.Annoyed.

【2】What can be known about samba in Paragraph 2?

A.It has a strong mixed culture.

B.Its music is always fast but soft.

C.It is not to the taste of the author.

D.It has its origins in South America.

【3】Why didn’t the author regret missing the main parade?

A.She met some amazing local people.

B.She gave her own parties in the street.

C.She celebrated the festival in a local way.

D.She didn’t have the tickets for the parade.

【4】What is the purpose of the passage?

    A.To recommend a helpful guide.

B.To encourage people to learn samba.

    C.To share an unforgettable experience.

D.To tell a cruel history of Rio de Janeiro.

  • 28、By now, it is pretty well understood that we regularly pay for things in ways other than using money. Sometimes we pay sill with cash. But we also pay for things with data, and more often, with our time and attention. We effectively hand over access to our minds in exchange for something “fee”, like email, streaming video or online shopping pages. As opposed to “paying” attention, we actually “spend attention”, agreeing to the view ads in exchange for something we really want.

The centrality of that deal in our lives makes it unacceptable that there are companies who seize our time and attention for absolutely nothing in exchange, and indeed, without permission at all-otherwise known as “attention theft”.

Attention theft happens anywhere you find your time and attention taken without permission, like the new, targeted advertising screens in hospital waiting rooms, the airlines that play full-volume advertising from a screen right in front of your face, or the advertising - screens in office elevators. These are just few examples in what is a growing category. Combined, they threaten to make us live life in a screen-lined cocoon(茧),shrunken and incapable of independent thought.

Then, what makes it “theft”?Advances in neuroscience over the last several decades make it clear that our brain’s resources are unconsciously triggered(触发)by sound and movement;therefore the screens seize rare mental resources. Meanwhile, in the law, theft is typically defined as the taking control of a resource “under such circumstances as to acquire the major part of its economic value or benefit. ” Given the established market value of time and attention, when taken without permission or compensation, it really is not much different from someone taking money out of your pocket. Thus, when the firms selling public-screen advertising to target audiences brag of rapid growth and billions in profit, those are actually earnings made by stealing from us.

【1】What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1?

    A.Preference for cash.

    B.Consumption of attention.

    C.Payments in shopping.

    D.Addiction to mass media.

【2】How does the writer show the wide spread of “attention theft”?

    A.By making a definition.

    B.By analyzing causes.

    C.By giving examples.

    D.By predicting results.

【3】Why is “attention theft” considered as a theft?

A.It brings a fortune to the thief.

B.It lays heavy burden on the brain.

C.It takes up mental resources secretly.

D.It brings about economic loss constantly.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

    A.The Crisis of Attention Theft

    B.The Price of Attention Theft

    C.Ads:Source or Theft of Information

    D.“Paying” Instead of “Spending” Attention

  • 29、When I was a high school student, mathematics looked like a big barrier(障碍)for me and several of my classmates. Mr Iyer, a strict maths teacher, was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his discipline(纪律). We had to arrive on time. pay undivided attention to his lectures, and dared not to ignore any of his homework.

Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us couldn’t sit still and seemed restless one day as the mid-term exams approached, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There’s too much to do,” we sighed. “We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.” “Nothing is impossible.” Mr Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here?” We reacted with blank stares.

“No,you don’t!” he said, answering his own question. “You have a staircase(楼梯)to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it in two giant leaps(跳跃). You simply take one step at a time. Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself if you keep at it. One step at a time. That’s the secret.” Then he wrote down an old motto on the blackboard—the longest journey starts with a single step. Having heard his staircase analogy(比拟), we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light.

Most of my classmates scored distinctions(成绩优异)in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer’s invaluable advice to my own students, they brighten up at the prospect of a lighter academic burden.

B.The reason why maths was hard for the author.

C.The students’ points of view on Mr lyer’s character.

D.The brief introduction of the author’s maths teacher, Mr Iyer.

【2】Why did Mr Iyer stop solving a mathematical problem in class?

A.Mr Iyer was a little tired and wanted to have a rest.

B.Some students made trouble and affected the class.

C.The mathematical problem was rather puzzling.

D.Some students seemed impatient and upset.

【3】What is the secret of reaching one’s goal according to Mr Iyer?

A.There is only one step between success and failure.

B.Take action quickly and make progress little by little.

C.It is important to make use of a good opportunity.

D.Don’t hesitate to ask for help when meeting with barriers.

【4】How does the author like Mr Iyer’s advice?

    A.Strange and impractical.

    B.Incorrect and misleading.

    C.Meaningful and valuable.

    D.Simple and uninteresting.

  • 30、   In the United States, there have been no deaths from commercial airline accidents since 2013. In fact, for decades, there has been a general _________ trend in the number of accidents per departure.

Complex systems are more likely to suffer from failures, but commercial aviation (航空) seems to be a(n) ___________. Since the 1960s, U.S. commercial aviation has become significantly more complex, and yet, flying has become safer. What lies behind this remarkable trend is a handful of smart approaches to_________. Here are two of them.

    1. Teach people to speak up—and to listen

A common error during airplane accidents used to be the _________ of first officers to question the captain’s poor decisions. When the captain was flying the airplane, he was hard to challenge, and his mistakes went _________.

All this began to change in the late 1970s with a training program known as Crew Resource Management (CRM). The program revolutionized the _________ not just of the cockpit (机舱) but also of the whole industry. It reframed safety as a _________ issue and put all crew members on more equal footing. It was no longer _________ to question the decisions of a superior; it was required. And CRM taught crew members the language of disagreement.

The lesson isn’t simply that people lower down in the _________ should speak up and higher-ups should listen. What CRM has shown is that people can be taught to speak up and to listen. The ability to express and embrace ____________ isn’t hardwired in our personality or cultural background; it’s a skill we can learn.

    2. Learn from small failures and close calls

In 1976, the US Federal Aviation Administration created an industry-wide system to collect safety reports. The Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) collects thousands of reports each month. Beyond receiving immunity (豁免权) for a mistake, it’s a point of ____________ for pilots to submit ASRS reports. They know the reports make air travel safer. The reports are stored in a searchable database that anyone can____________, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) highlights safety trends in its monthly newsletter, Callback.

Here, too, there is a ____________ lesson. Small mistakes and near misses can be a rich source of data about what might ____________ in our system. Mistakes shouldn’t be ____________. By openly sharing stories of failures and near failures, we can treat errors as an opportunity to learn.

NEW YORK (Reuters) — U.S. factories shrugged off weakness in the global economy in November as manufacturing activity rose to its highest level in five months, a fresh sign the 1 economy was accelerating.

Recent data on consumer spending and private-sector job creation has also boosted optimism on the pace of growth.

“The economy seems finally to be 2real momentum,” said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.

Also pointing to growth, automakers reported U.S. sales rose 13.9 percent in November from a year earlier, Autodata Corp said.

The Institute for Supply Management said on Thursday its index of national factory activity rose to 52.7 from 50.8 the month before, beating analysts’ expectations and showing the sector continues to 3.

The added momentum, also apparent in the report’s details, reduces the chances the U.S. economy will slip into a new recession, even with an expected contraction in the euro zone.

Compared to a dismal first half of the year, the pace of U.S. growth more than 4in the third quarter to a 2 percent 5 rate. While that remains subpar, economists believe activity will 6 even stronger in the final three months of the year.

The ISM 7 of new orders rose to its highest level since April, and the export index also improved, although modestly.

“That should keep some momentum going,” said Sean Incremona, an economist at 4Cast in New York. “It is good to see things are not getting worse now.”

Much of the 8 of the world, however, is getting worse, especially in Europe where policy-makers are fighting a raging sovereign debt crisis.
