Charles Blackman is famous for his beautiful painting of dreams. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary tale of Alice in Wonderland –the story of a Victorian girl who falls down a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experience all kinds of things. At that time, Blackman’s wife was suffering form progressive blindness. The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.

  • 27、One of the things I want to plan well this year is how to manage my weight during the holidays. Because, let’s face it, the next few weeks are some of the toughest weeks of the year when it comes to eating well. 【1】 ? If so, join me in taking these four steps to better health, less guilt and more peace of mind.

    【2】

Yes, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas provide a lot of opportunities to eat at family dinners, parties, church events, shopping trips, and many others. But those events don’t happen every day—many days between now and New Year’s Day are normal work, school and family days. So don’t let every day become a “holiday eating event” and try to manage your weight.

Eat the holiday foods you really love, and avoid the ones you don’t

Everyone has favorite holiday foods. Three of mine are pumpkin pie and ginger cookies and sweet potatoes. Maybe for you it’s your mother’s Christmas cookies, your neighbor’s homemade candy, or your special coconut cake. So enjoy those foods, the ones that make the holidays special for you. But many holiday foods don’t hold a special place in your heart. And some of them are worthless junk that doesn’t deserve to be eaten. 【3】 .

    Move your body every day

Regular physical activity helps you deal with some of the downsides of the holiday season, including worry, fatigue, the “blues”, and too many calories. 【4】 . At this busiest time of the year, you’ll think you don’t have time for it. But make time—it’s worth it.

Drink lots of water and eat real food most of the time

Carry water with you wherever you go, and keep a bottle or glass handy at home or work. If you don’t like plain water, make fruit waters. 【5】 . When you’re not enjoying your favorite holiday foods, eat primarily fruits, vegetables, lean protein, nuts, whole grains, and healthy fats.

    A.So avoid those foods

B.Are you trying to keep a balanced diet

C.And eat as much real food as possible

D.Are you looking for a way to manage your weight too

E.Time permitting, I do hope to taste different kinds of food

F.Don’t allow the holiday season to become a six-week “eating season”

G.It reduces stress, helps you feel energized, burns calories, and generally makes you feel great

  • 28、Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks(卡车)are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. Americans won’t live without cars!

Most Americans would find it hard to think what life could look like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution that is caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous (有毒)and dangerous to health.

One way to get rid of the polluted car is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field(领域) has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by car, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and to go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.

But this change doesn’t come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment(失业).

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

1How many ways to get rid of air pollution are suggested in this article by the writer?

    A. One   B. Two

    C. Three   D. Four

2Large car factories are trying to build a clean car, ___________.

    A. which is clean itself

    B. which is used to clean streets

    C. which does not pollute the air

    D. which is easier to make

3If the number of cars is cut down, the most serious problem to American workers is _______.

    A. to have no work to do   B. to keep the air clean

    C. to get a better life   D. to go work by bike

4What is the conclusion of the writer?

    A. Bicycling is the only way out

    B. The number of cars must be cut down

    C. Cars bring us nothing but serious problems

    D. Cars bring us not only a better life but serious problems

    The Floating School

Life on the islands can feel a bit isolated due to a lack of electricity and internet connectivity.

Although some of the islands have primary schools, most young people must travel to the larger islands or to the mainland to attend high school. Schools on the islands follow the 1 curriculum (课程). They don't teach subjects such as maritime skills, swimming or local fishing traditions, and so the curriculum isn't always 2 with students' everyday life.

So, we 3 the Floating School after winning funding through a US State Department grant competition called Seeds for the Future. Before we started the school, we spoke with young people, community leaders and teachers on the islands to find out the topics young people are most interested in. We also learned about the various 4 of students and young people who don't go to school. Thus, we 5 our own non-formal educational programme that fits with the context of life on the islands. For example, those working in fishing have responsibility 6 the marine life, so we teach environmental protection and discourage destructive fishing practices.

The Floating School is a wooden boat that can 7 up to twenty people and it goes to the students, not the other way around -- we use it to transport educational materials, tools, and teachers to young people living on the islands. Our teachers are local young 8— so far we have had journalists, photographers, computer engineers and musicians — and students who want to 9 their skills.

At first, many of the young people thought the Floating School would be the same as their schools on the islands. They had thought of the teachers to be 10. But our students learn through art, media and literature. They don't have to wear uniforms or shoes, and the teachers treat the students as equals, without judging them. This means our students can be themselves.

My wife and I went to the Animal Emergency Hospital on a Good Friday last year. We ended up there with Jack, a beautiful dog.Any pet that is there on a Good Friday is in bad trouble as most vets(兽医诊所) are closed .

Jack was seriously ill and they helped him. Before we left we said we were not rich but we wanted to do an act of kindness and gave $1,500 for someone they thought really needed the help.

Within 18 hours the money ended up helping a single mother whose dog had been bitten(咬) by a snake. She had at least one child with serious illness, so the decision had to be made to help the child with the treatment the mother had booked,or to help the dog. We were able to help the dog so she could support her family. The hospital gave her my phone number and I received a heartfelt message from a stranger saying thank you. The vets also said it restored their faith in humanity and good people, which was nice.

Sadly I lost my best friend Jack almost 2 months ago. He was such a beautiful dog that I feel honored to share my life with him.

A few days later,I went again in the morning to the Animal Emergency Hospital and gave $1,500—something intended for my beautiful dog Jack. And we are still not rich, but acts of kindness are important. The fact is that emergency vets are not cheap for ordinary pet owners.I hope the money can help someone who finds themselves in a terrible situation tomorrow and it helps their family stay together.I talked with some pet owners there and they said that sometimes they really couldn’t afford treatment for their pets.I realized that I should do more then.
