  • 26、Protect Children from Cyber-bullying

When you think about bullying, you might think of a child being bullied by another in the schoolyard. As more young people have access to computers and cellphones, traditional bullying has gone digital, which has not yet gained awareness in Chinese parents.

Cyber-bullying, first invented by Canadian educator Bill Belsey, is the use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other people, in an intentional, repeated, and unfriendly manner. It involves threatening text message, the spread of online rumors on social networking sites, and intentionally keeping someone out of an online group. Cyber-bullying is at an all-time high in the US. According to a study from the US Department of Justice, more than 43% of teenagers report being victims(受害者) of cyber-bullying.

Compared to face-to-face bullying, cyber-bullying is considered to have a worse emotional effect on the victims, and kids could feel more desperate and depressed. Severe, long-term or frequent cyber-bullying can leave victims at greater risk for anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Research says that cyber-bullying victims were almost twice as likely to have attempted suicide(自杀未遂) compared to youths who had not experienced it.

In traditional schoolyard bullying, at least home is a safe place for the victims. But cyber-bullying is endless——it could happen anytime. Moreover, in the digital world, bullying is much easier, as a bully can pick on people with a much lower risk of being caught. What’s wore, cyber-bullying has become a worldwide issue. Many students around the world are suffering from cyber-bullying now.

For schools and parents, safety rules should be set in the virtual world for kids, such as telling them not to let out anything to a stranger. Active steps should be taken to make the public aware of the seriousness of this problem, because it would be too late to take measures after tragedy(悲剧) strikes.

【1】According to the writer, which of the following is cyber-bullying?

    A.Attacking someone on the Internet.

B.Keeping someone out of a club.

    C.Threatening someone face to face.

B.measures should be taken against cyber-bullying.

C.there is no escape from cyber-bullying for students.

【4】Who is this passage mainly intended for?

    B.Teachers and students.

    C.Researchers and victims.

    D.Parents and educators.

  • 27、   It was about a year ago when a positive change in a community started.

I was in fifth grade, and at the time I wrote a paper about the migration of the monarch butterfly and received a perfect score. I was so happy. I called my grandmother, Nana, to tell her the exciting news. All of my talk about monarchs evoked memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl out on the farm,” she said, “those black and orange butterflies were a common sight. But there do seem to be fewer monarchs fluttering (翩翩飞舞) around the neighborhood each summer. Perhaps we should try to find out where they’ve gone.”

Nana and I decided to investigate.

That weekend, Nana met me at the public library and we started our research. Our research produced plenty of information. The best information was this: it doesn’t take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated (专心致志的) people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation. When I read this, an idea came to mind. “What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested.

“We will need several people to help us!” she replied.

The next week, Nana presented the idea to her garden club; I talked to my friends and neighbors. Nana’s garden club decided to plant a butterfly garden next to the city park. The library put together a display of gardening and butterfly books. The editor of the local newspaper wrote an informative article on how to make our community monarch-friendly. As spring turned into summer, those volunteers also worked to weed (除杂草) and care for the public gardens. We all waited and watched to see whether our plan would work—it did work! Over twenty black and orange butterflies were noticed visiting the Waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.

It happened on a day when the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue. As monarchs fluttered around us, people laughed and danced; Nana cried tears of happiness. It was truly a meaningful experience.

    A.The author’s personal wish.

B.The beauty of the monarch butterfly.

C.The author’s good performance in school.

D.The drop in numbers of the monarch butterfly.

3What can we know about the Monarch Waystation?

A.It should be built in a park.

B.It can be created and used easily.

C.It needs continued support from the government.

D.It is the best way to protect the monarch butterfly.

4How did the author’s monarch project impact the community?

A.It caused the community to miss the past.

B.It organized the community around a purpose.

C.It taught the community to use the public library.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Giving the missing words with the help of the letters given

Children have their own rules in playing games. They s1 need a referee(裁判) and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn’t seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that d2 a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compare. They also enjoyed games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.

Grown-ups can hardly find children’s game exciting, and they often feel p3 at why their kids play such simple game again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinary afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give o4, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.

It appears to us that when children play a game they can i5 a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.
