26、Felix “Andarin” Carvajal was a born runner. As a boy, he spent his childhood running up and down nearby hills. Years later, as a postman, Carvajal became well-known in the city of Havana, and finally, he began to put his fame to use for donations, so he might represent Cuba as a marathon runner at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, there was no state support for Olympic athletes in Cuba.
But even with the money, Carvajal nearly didn’t make it there. His journey to the Games took him first to New Orleans, where he lost all the money he had saved up for the trip. In a foreign city, Carvajal began to walk north up along the Mississippi River to St. Louis. It was hundreds of miles, but between walking and hitching (搭便车) rides, he was able to reach St. Louis in time for his event.
It was August in St. Louis and Carvajal stood in the staging area, hungry and out of shape and tired. Carvajal took off to a commanding early lead despite the fact that he had not eaten for two days. Carvajal had never particularly believed in pacing himself. Carvajal was mostly self-trained and his ideas about running had always been straightforward: to run far and run fast and run until you can’t go anymore. But 26.2 miles is a long distance. Carvajal was reported to have picked and eaten five green apples while running and became badly ill with a stomachache. Miraculously, Carvajal managed to return to the race and finish in fourth place.
The 1904 Olympics was the peak of Carvajal’s international career. But he remained a runner for the rest of his life. At 55 years old, Carvajal ran the entire length of Cuba along the country’s main highway, a distance of nearly 700 miles. Toward the end of his life, he performed a short running demonstration (演示). “This is to show you that I still run.” he told the crowd.

28、When I was eight years old, I entered an art contest hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and I won. I was so excited, but I didn’t even know what “endangered” meant at that time. That night, I asked my mom and we found out there were over 6,000 endangered species (物种)! I felt sad and angry. I told my mom I would like to help save them. She asked me, “How?” And I told her my plan.
She said once I painted ten, she’d create a Facebook page for me. To my mom’s surprise, I had 10 paintings done in 5 days. My Facebook page becomes a platform where I publish new works, share my opinions and raise people’s environmental awareness.
Facebook reporters came to interview me and wrote my story in the Community Voices and then many other websites shared it, making me shoot to fame overnight. My Facebook followers increased rapidly and some offered me money for an art exhibition. One of my paintings was sold at the Wolf Conservation Center by auction (拍卖) for $25,000 this summer.
At the age of 13, I have created more than three hundred paintings of endangered species. I use my website to sell them, and I also donate (捐赠) them and auction them to raise money to support the organizations I work with like IFAW, The Wolf Conservation Center in New York, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots and REST. I did a lot of research before choosing those organizations because I wanted to make sure the money I donated would be used for protecting wildlife and their natural homes. Those organizations have helped my dreams come true. Up to now I have donated $69,000, and my goal is $100,000.
We all have an important role to play and if we work together, we will change the world. We need to be brave and original; we should stand out and speak up. It isn’t always easy or popular but being true to ourselves is the bravest thing we can do.
【1】What plan did the author most probably tell her mother?

【3】Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Talented and caring.
B.Patient and brave.
C.Independent and creative.
D.Friendly and curious.
【4】How does the author work with organizations like IFAW and REST?
A.She sells her paintings to them.
B.She does a lot of research about them.
C.She offers them money to protect wildlife.
D.She paints endangered species for them.

A.We should learn to be more creative.
B.We should express our opinions bravely.
C.We should raise money to support organizations.
D.We should try our best to make the world a better place.
29、Luciano Baietti, a retired school headmaster from Italy, holds the Guinness record for the most university degrees. The 70yearold currently has 15 bachelors or masters degrees from various universities across Italy, and is getting ready to get his 16th.
Getting more than one college degree is not exactly unheardof, but 15 is apparently quite impressive, since it's only been done by one man. Although he spends his days working around his house and garden, like most people his age, at night, Baietti turns into a student again. Every morning, at 3 a.m., he wakes up and studies by the light of his desk lamp.
“Thanks to books, I feel free. After all, the words share the same root,” he says, referring to the Italian words libro (book) and libero (free). He is inspired by the 19th century French essayist LouisFrancois Berlin, whose portrait is also on display in his study, alongside his many framed university degrees, and whom he describes as “a man of culture and knowledge”.
Baietti first made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2002, after his eighth degree. Then he spent the next 15 years adding seven more bachelors and masters degrees to his collection.
“Each time I set myself a new challenge to see how far my body and my brain can go.” At 70 years old, Baietti thinks he has enough energy for at least one more degree, this time in food science.
Probably the most important thing about Baietti's achievement is that he managed to get most of his university degrees while working as headmaster of a secondary school, and volunteering with Italy’s Red Cross. The secret was always getting up at 3 in the morning to make sure that his thirst for knowledge didn't affect his professional activity and his family life. He spent 3 hours studying every day, and that was apparently all he needed to pass his exams and write his theses.
【1】Why does Baietti want to get his 16th degrees?
A.Because he wants to be the first Italian to break a Guinness record twice.
B.Because he is retired and has a lot of free time.
C.Because his wife urges him to do so.
D.Because he challenges himself to open up a broader world.
【2】What is the intention of Baietti’s hanging LouisFrancois Berlin's portrait in his study?
A.To learn from him.
B.To discourage him.
C.To witness him.
D.To curse him.
【3】Baietti can be best described as ________.
A.honest and caring
B.optimistic and generous
C.determined and hardworking
D.reliable and imaginative
【4】What lesson can we learn from the story of Baietti?
A.Well begun is half done.
B.Never too late to learn.
C.Take things as they come.
D.Strike the iron while it is hot.
