  • 26、Surviving Hurricane Sandy

Natalie Doan,14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living just a few blocks from the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the wave from her house. “It’s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.

On October 29, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’s family ran away to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridge closed.

When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie’s friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the old. Natalie’s school was so damaged that she had to go to a school in Brooklyn.

In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway revive encouraged Natalie. Volunteers came with lots of clothing and toys. Neighbors offered their spare time to help others rebuild. Teenagers climbed stairs to deliver water and food to people trapped in powerless high buildings.

“My mom tells me that I can’t control what happens to me,” Natalie says. “but I can always choose how I deal with it.”

    Natalie’s choice was to help.

She created a website page matching survivors in need with people who wanted to help. In the coming months, her website page helped lots of kids: Christopher, who received a new basketball; Charlie, who got a new keyboard. Natalie also worked with other organizations to bring much-need supplies to Rockaway. Her efforts made her a famous person.

Today, the scars (创痕) of destruction are still seen in Rockaway, but hope is in the air. The streets are clear, and many homes have been rebuilt. “I can’t imagine living anywhere but Rockaway,” Natalie says. “My neighborhood will be back, even stronger than before.”

  • 28、Growing up, Deka Ismail says she let labels define what she could be. “I was a black girl, from a refugee(难民) family,” Deka said. “It was as if I was only allowed to explore in this predetermined box.”

After a high school chemistry class inspired her to think about a career in science and gave her confidence in the field, Deka learned to live outside labels and began making big plans for her future. Now she is about to begin her freshman year at the University of California, planning to become a professor.

Born and raised in San Diego’s City Heights neighbourhood, Deka is the daughter of a Somali refugee couple. While some might say Deka’s success happened in spite of her background, she would say differently, that her experiences shaped her and inspired her to be the driven, young scientist that she is today.

When Deka was eight years old, her mother got a job by studying hard back in school in order to support the whole family. That made Deka realize that education could make a difference to one’s life. She spent a lot of time in the library reading books, and didn’t do many of the things her peers did, like partying or having romantic relationships.

“I always felt like I had to be the perfect girl for my family,” Deka said. “You have to not even do your best but two times better than everyone else. I felt like the whole world was waiting for me to mess up.”

Deka’s efforts paid off. The summer before her senior year of high school, she was accepted to the American Chemical Society Project SEED Programme. “She brought both enthusiasm and focus,” Botham, a researcher at this research institute, recalled. “She arrived every day ready to work, ready to learn and ready to deal with new challenges regardless of whether or not she had done anything similar.”

When asked what advice she would give to others like her, Deka warned them not to underestimate themselves. “Don’t tell yourself that scholarship is too big or this programme is too competitive or I’ll never get into this school,” she said. “I was not sure whether I could make it until I started seeing the acceptance letters rolling in.”

【1】What made Deka ignore labels and dream big for her future?

    A.Her black skin.

    B.Her exploration in the box.

    C.Her poor family.

    D.Her chemistry class.

【2】When was Deka aware of the significance of education?

    A.After becoming a professor.

B.After reading books in the library.

    C.After her mother’s working experience.

D.After going to the University of California.

【3】What kind of person do you think Deka is?

    A.Smart and ambitious.

    B.Hardworking and confident.

    C.Considerate and intelligent.

    D.Warm-hearted and fortunate.

【4】What can be inferred from Botham’s words?

    A.Deka underestimates herself.

    B.Deka likes doing similar things.

    C.Deka enjoys something exciting.

D.Deka is always prepared for study and difficulties.

  • 29、The companies below offer student accommodation(住宿) all around London, no matter what university you are attending. And they limit the complications (复杂) that other rental companies can have (such as paying for heat and hot water, paying your rent yearly and so on).

CRM Students has 12 different properties (房产) to choose from in London with various size choices depending on your budget and requirements. Prices start from £ 140 per week.

International Students House is unique because they offer twin, triple and quad rooms, which means they are cheaper per week than others. Of course, you will be sharing your bedroom with up to three other people. Prices start from £ 78.4 per week.

Prodigy Living has several properties in London (most of which have just been decorated) and offers en-suite (套房) rooms in flats and one-bedroom flats. Prices start from £ 209 per week.

Scape Living has properties in Greenwich, Surrey and Shoreditch, with the latter two being new apartments as of 2015, which means they will be in pretty good condition. Prices start from £ 185 per week.

Unite Students offers student accommodation in various areas of London, from en-suite rooms to two-bedroom flats, with lots of sharing choices available. Prices start from £169 per week.

These student housing associations are the best I found on the Internet for cheap student accommodation in London; however, I am aware that new ones are appearing every day. For a full list of associations like these (but most are more expensive than those listed above), I recommend checking out UCL’s alternative accommodation page.

Note: Most rooms require a small deposit (押金), which is typically the same value as your weekly rental price ( for example, £ 200 per week =£ 200 deposit before you move in).

1Why does the author recommend the companies above?

ABecause they offer all kinds of student accommodation.

BBecause they allow students to pay the rent weekly.

CBecause they mainly provide one-bedroom flats.

DBecause they avoid the need for students to pay extra for facilities (设施) in the room.

2The rent of the houses that International Students House offers is cheaper than others because _________.

Astudents have to share the bedrooms with others

Bstudents needn’t pay for heat and water

Cmost of the houses have just been decorated

Dstudents don’t have the right to choose the room size

3How much will you pay if you want to rent a new apartment?

    AAt least £140 per week.

BAt least £ 78.40 per week.

    CAt least £195 per week.

DAt least £ 185 per week.

Mr. Tai, the teacher in charge of sports at Sarasota High School in Florida, had just celebrated his 58th birthday—an age at which many would think seriously of retiring (退休). However, it was not so with Mr. Tai. He had an outstanding record of athletic achievements in leading the school’s sports team. Some of the students he had trained had become national runners. The school board agreed he continued to work as they did not want to lose the services of so meone who had successfully led the school sports tea m to the finals of the National Athletics   Championships.

In the year before, however, the school team did not get as many medals in the National Athletics Championships as expected. Mr. Tai’s hopes were fired this year by two promising star athletes, Farid and Hassan, who happened to be twins.

In the school’s sports meeting, Farid broke the school’s twenty-year record for the 100meters event. His brother, Hassan, was just a second behind. Since Hassan had an ankle (踝关节) injury, Mr.Tai decided to submit (提交) only Farid’s name to the finals of the National Athletics Championships. On the day he submitted the results of the best runner in the school, he mistakenly wrote Hassan’s name instead, without noticing it.

When Mr.Tai received the list of the finalists (参加决赛者) in event, he was quite surprised and immediately he realized that he had made the mistake. However, it was too late to inform the sports secretariat (秘书处). Apart from that, pride also did not allow him to admit his mistake at that moment. Therefore, He decided to inform Farid’s brother, Hassan, and start to train him in the final preparations for this event.
