二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Smartphones are perhaps one of the things we like most or least. While they create a shared and communicative digital(数字的)experience, their use also greatly reduces the amount of direct communication we have. So, while we feel closer than ever through smartphones, research shows that we're actually lonelier than ever.

We see this situation most commonly among the youth who were born into the digital age. Phones have increased the level of isolation(孤立). Janet Behrens, principal of Iowa Valley Junior-Senior High School, noticed it in the lunchroom, where students had their heads down looking at their phones and had little conversation with each other.

Then, she created a lunchroom policy, which requires all students to leave their phones behind during Friday lunches and sit at a table with students they may not know. During Friday lunches, kids pick a card that shows which lunch table they will be sitting at that day. Each table provides ideas for conversation starters, in case students have trouble thinking of things to talk about with kids they might not know.

Anyone who knows teens knows that they are likely to refuse to follow this kind of forced socialization(合群). So they may not quickly agree with such an idea. However, the new program is different. After taking a few weeks to get used to the new program, kids are kinder to each other and they actually look forward to Friday lunch hour. Sahara Kanke, a ninth grader, said, “I think it's fun. I was a bit confused when I first knew the program. But I like doing it now. People are nicer to each other now because they got to know each other at lunch.”

Policies like this are important. ABC News reported that students who use phones and computers less during class scored half a grade higher than students with smartphones. Due to the advantages of reducing smartphone use among the youth, schools around the world have been testing different methods to help students overcome the difficulties.

【1】What does the author say about the smartphones?

A.They have caused a waste of study time.

B.They enjoy great popularity among young

C.They provide lots of interesting activities for people.

D.They can both improve and weaken connections among people.

【2】What does the underlined word “it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Students' dislike of school food.

    B.Students' loneliness brought by smartphones.

C.Students' refusing to follow some school rules.

D.Students' making new friends through the Internet.

【3】What can we learn about the new policy?

A.It aims to get students to share their problems.

B.It can improve students' problem-solving ability.

C.It calls on students to stop chatting online at school.

D.It encourages face-to-face communication among students.

    【4】What does Paragraph 4 suggest?

A.It is pretty difficult to get along with teenagers.

B.It is challenging to carry out the new program in school.

C.The new program has drawn students closer to each other.

D.Young students were glad to join the program at the beginning.

  • 27、The Internet has become part of teenage life. There's a report on 3, 375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet.

In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. It gives useful advice such as it's good to read news or find helpful information to study. Some students also make online friends. But if you are meeting a friend offline, let your parents know.

Teachers and parents all think the book is a good idea. It will teach students how to be a good person in the online world. It will be a guide for teens to use the Internet and keep students away from bad sites.

  • 28、   UK-based swimming pool manufacturer (制造商) Compass Pools has announced plans for the world’s first 360-degree infinity (无限) pool. Titled Infinity London, the pool would contain 600,000 liters of water, and would sit at the top of a 55-story hotel.

According to Compass Pools’ plan, the pool would feature transparent (透明的) walls and floor, offering views across London’s skyline and down into the hotel below. These walls would be made of cast acrylic, a material chosen to make sure that the material is completely clear.

The main problem with designing the pool was how to make sure entry or exit from the pool without affecting the view. Speaking about this design, Compass Pools’ technical director and designer Alex Kemsley explained“Normally a simple ladder would suffice, but we didn’t want stairs on the outside of the building or in the pool as it would spoil the view – and obviously you don’t want 600,000 litres of water running down through the building either. The solution is based on the door of a submarine, coupled with a rotating spiral (螺旋的) staircase which rises from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out.”

Take a look at early models of how the pool might look in the gallery above. At present, no contract has been made but building work could begin as early as 2020.

1What does the underlined word “suffice” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Solve the problem. B.Beautify the pool.

C.Add to the difficulty. D.Make sure of safety.

2How can swimmers get in the pool?

A.By stepping onto a simple ladder in the pool.

B.By taking a lift of the building below the pool.

C.Through a rotating spiral staircase in the center of the pool.

    D.Through a submarine door and a staircase.

3Which is the best title for the text?

A.The secret of the world’s first 360-degree infinity pool

B.World’s first 360-degree infinity pool is set to open in London

C.UK-based swimming pool manufacturer Compass Pools meet problems

D.Enjoying ourselves in the sky is never impossible

  • 29、A teacher from Relax Kids in Tamworth, UK, used two apples to show her students the damaging and often unseen results of bullying (霸凌). And her post about the powerful lesson has spread over easily.

Rosie Dutton explained that during one of her classes she introduced two red apples to the children. What the kids didn’t know was that before the lesson, Dutton had repeatedly dropped one of the apples on the floor. And yet, on the outside at least, both apples looked perfect. “ I picked up the apple I dropped on the floor and started to tell the children how I disliked this apple,” Dutton wrote.

She then encouraged the students to do the same. Some of the children looked at her as if she were crazy, but the students passed the apple around the circle, calling it names.

Continuing the exercise, the teacher then passed the second apple around the circle. This apple, however, was showered with comments like “Your skin is beautiful” and “What a beautiful colour you are!”

Dutton then showed the students both apples once again, highlighting that, “There was no change, and both apples still looked the same.”

That is, until she cut them open. “The apple we’d said unkind words to was bruised (出现伤痕) and all mushy (糊状) inside,” she said. There was, she said, an immediate ‘light bulb’ moment for her students “They really got it. What we saw inside that apple is what is happening inside everyone of us when someone mistreats us with their words or action.”

Dutton explained how important it is to teach children to stand up for one another, and to stop any form of bullying.

“Let’s create a generation of kind and caring children.” the teacher wrote, “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.”

【1】What did the teacher do to the first apple before the lesson?

    A.She coloured it brightly.

    B.She make it look perfect.

    C.She damaged it on purpose.

D.She peeled it for the kids.

【2】What does the underlined phrase ‘ calling it names’ in paragraph mean ?

    A.Shouting at it

    B.Cheering loud for it

    C.Speaking highly of it.

    D.Saying rude words to it.

【3】What did the teacher instruct the kids to do with the second apple?

    A.Drop it

    B.Praise it

    C.Ignore it

    D.Observe it

【4】What’s the purpose of the teacher’s using two apples in class?

    A.To draw the kids attention

    B.To explain her personal preference

C.To make a comparison between their appearance

D.To help the kids understand the harm of bullying

It was Christmas Eve 1949. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. After supper, I sat by the fireplace, waiting for Pa to read the Bible. But Pa didn’t get the Bible; instead, he went outside.

Several minutes later, he shouted in the yard, “Come on, Elizabeth. Bundle up. It’s cold out.” I was upset. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Pa was dragging me out in the cold. As I opened the door, a big sled(雪橇)stood before me. I unwillingly climbed up. We loaded it with wood. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder whether the horses would be able to pull it. Before we set off, Pa hurried to the kitchen and returned with a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. I felt puzzled and annoyed.

“What’s in the little sack?” I asked. “Shoes. They’re out of shoes. Little Jake had gunnysacks(黄麻袋)wrapped around his feet when I saw him digging for wood in the snow yesterday. I also brought some candy for the kids.”

We rode the two miles to the Little Jake’s place in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. Widow(寡妇)Clark, Jack’s mother, had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our concern?

We unloaded the wood and knocked on the door. Mrs. Clark opened the door. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The three children were huddled (挤在一起)underneath another blanket, sitting in front of a small fire.

Pa set the sack of flour on the table and handed her the other sack. She opened it hesitantly and took out the shoes, a pair for her and one pair for each of the children. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling as tears ran down her cheeks. She looked at Pa as if she wanted to say something, but nothing came out.

Pa turned to me and said, “Elizabeth, go bring in enough wood to heat this place up.”
