二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you”ll have no trouble answering these questions.

Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness, but distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear, we are numb (麻木的) to new stimulation (剌激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.

The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.

Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides , and said, a “ruby-crowned kinglet” and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.

The pressures of “time” and “destination” are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.

Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.

1According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ______.

A.anxious to do wonders B.sensitive to others’ feelings

C.likely to develop unpleasant habits D.eager to explore the world around them

2Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?

A.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.

B.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.

C.The natural beauty isn’t attractive to them.

D.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.

3In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should ______.

A.fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world

B.get rid of some bad habits in our daily life

C.open our mind to new things and ideas

D.try our best to protect nature

  • 22、Not long after the first fitness magazine was published, a list probably followed soon after, ranking the best fitness equipment. This tradition has continued, with the implied message: use this and exercise will be yours.

And that's part of the problem, says Dr. Lieberman, a professor of Harvard University. There isn't one “best” anything to achieve fitness. Besides, people understand exercise is good for them. Knowledge about exercise still doesn't motivate.

Before you can answer why, it helps to look at history. Before the Industrial Revolution, people fetched water and walked up stairs because they had to. But then technology made life and work easier. Exercise has become something that people have to carve out time for. “It's a fundamental instinct to avoid physical activity when it's neither necessary nor rewarding,” he says.

It would seem like being healthy would qualify as necessary, but a doctor's prescription to exercise “can make it like taking cod liver oil,” Lieberman says. “Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it doesn't. And it's still coming across as an order, and “not having a heart attack in five years is not an immediate reward,” says Dr. Beth Frates, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

People might not want to exercise because it's never been enjoyable. Most of us probably have memories of gym class, not being picked for a team, or being in a fitness center that's filled with in-shape people. The majority don't feel excited. They feel that exercise isn't for them, but it can be. Coaching people in an empowering and motivating way can work much better than ordering someone to exercise. It starts with an expanded definition of what counts as exercise, and an injection of what's rarely used to describe exercise, but is certainly allowed: namely, fun.

【1】What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.The magazine.

    B.The tradition.

    C.The equipment.

    D.The message.

【2】What can we infer about technology?

    A.It improves life quality.

    B.It saves people's time.

    C.It drives social progress.

    D.It makes exercise less likely.

【3】Why does the author mention “cod liver oil” in paragraph 4?

    A.To attach importance to health.

    B.To present a doctor's prescription.

C.To explain exercise is considered inessential.

D.To introduce the latest medical application.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Exercise should be made more joyful.

B.It's more fun to work out with others.

C.We may encounter bad workout experiences.

D.Orders work well to motivate people to exercise.

  • 23、Ways to save the Earth as a family

These days the news about the planet can be overwhelming for kids and their parents. Actually, personal actions can make a difference.

    UNPLUG

Don't worry—we don't mean taking a break from your phone. We’re talking about the charger. Chargers that remain plugged into the wall can suck energy even when the device is turned off. Ask your kids to remind you to unplug chargers when they’re not in use, as well as switch off power plugs for TVs and lamps.

    FRESH FRUIT

Buying seasonal, local food cuts down on the energy needed to grow and transport it. Before taking your children to the grocery store, ask them to look for fruits and vegetables in season.

    SAFE SOUVENIRS

Avoid souvenirs or other things made from animal parts like scales, teeth, feathers, seashells, and so on. Instead, take your kids to local markets where you can meet the artists and search for something made of materials like used cans, or magazine paper.

    KID SCIENTISTS

Instantly transform your kids into scientists by signing up for a citizen science project that identifies animals. Just taking a photo of an animal and uploading it to a site like iNaturalist can help biologists learn how the animal is adapting to a changing world.

It's true that sweeping collective action is needed to control climate change, but small adjustments by people help too. Plus, by taking action to protect the planet, you can help your children feel empowered in the face of these global problems. Start with these tips to get the whole family involved in protecting the Earth.

【1】Which of the following can help save electricity at home?

    A.UNPLUG.

    B.FRESH FRUIT.

    C.SAFE SOUVENIRS.

    D.KID SCIENTISTS

【2】What kind of souvenirs may the author suggest?

A.Hats decorated with beautiful bird feathers.

    B.Necklaces with seashells looking attractive.

C.Shopping bags made from some old clothes

D.Any artist's works from the local markets.

【3】What is the function of posting photos of animals on websites?

A.It enriches the website by adding more pictures.

B.It encourages kids to sign up for a science project.

C.It offers kids more chances to identify animals.

D.It can help scientists conduct scientific research

  • 24、Cigarettes aren’t just harmful when they’re being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine (尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce.

While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out, an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later.

“I was absolutely surprised,” since environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).“The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first hand, second hand and now third hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter.”

To measure emissions (排放) from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2,100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends were sealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so.

After setting the room’s temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days at a time, especially in the heat.

【1】What do the researchers say about cigarette ends?

    A.They contain little nicotine.

B.They produce no nicotine five days later.

C.They give off nicotine for days.

D.They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes.

    【2】What do Poppendieck’s words suggest?

    A.First-hand smoking does most harm.

B.The findings are within his expectation.

C.Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors.

D.Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored.

【3】Which word best describes the author’s attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days?

    A.Unclear.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Puzzled.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Used cigarette ends release harmful chemicals

B.Cigarettes are less harmful while being smoked

C.People pay more attention to the health influence of the used cigarette ends.

D.Cigarette ends produce less chemicals in the heat

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、请阅读下面文字及图片,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Many students in China regard passing the college entrance examination as the ultimate (终极的) goal of academic life. Almost all students study hard up to senior high school to get higher grades in every subject, and be in a better position to excel in gaokao and get admitted to a “good” university, fewer challenges lie between them and a college diploma. Therefore, quite a few students, over-burdened with studies since their primary school days, lose interest in studies, let alone excelling in academics after entering a university.

However, getting a college degree now requires more effort than it did before. In September, the Ministry of Education released an announcement, requiring universities to increase the difficulty of undergraduate courses and work harder to end academic misconduct in bachelor’s theses (毕业论文). Universities will reasonably increase students’ academic burden to encourage them to work harder and improve their knowledge and skill levels.

However, while the Ministry of Education’s plans aim to increase university students’ academic burden, they’re not intended to put extra pressure on them. Instead, the new requirements are meant to fulfill the basic requirements of university education.
