二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Two teenage girls have been honored by the Indian government after it was discovered that they had pretended to be boys for five years to run their father’s barbershop when he became too ill to work.

Jyoti Kumari, 18, and her 16-year-old sister, Neha, took over their father’s salon in their village in Uttar Pradesh after he became ill in 2014. The shop closed at first but it was the family’s only source of income, forcing the girls to try to run it themselves.

“Customers were skeptical about having their hair or moustaches trimmed by young women, while others did not behave well towards us,” Jyoti told The Guardian. “For them, girls running a male salon were unacceptable, so we decided to change our whole get-up so that none could identify us.”

The girls cut their hair shot, wore men’s clothes and adopted the male names Deepak and Raju. Several people in their village of about 100 houses knew their real identities, but for the next few years, most customers from surrounding areas had no idea. Neha said, “You could not identify me even today.”

They earned at least 400 rupees ($4) a day, enough to pay for their father’s treatment and support the family.

As the years passed, they have slowly revealed their real identities to more customers. “Now we have gained enough confidence and don’t fear anyone,” Neha said. “The majority of the customers have come to know that we are girls.” Jyoti has started to let her hair grow.

After a journalist from the nearby city of Gorakhpur published a story about the girls in a Hindi newspaper, they were honored by government officers.

“It’s a brilliant story of how one can survive by battling against all difficulties,” said Abhishek Pandey, an official. “The sisters should be the inspiration for society and their story must be made known to the public.”

【1】Why did the girls run the barbershop?

A.They expected to hide their identities.

B.They had no other ways to make a living.

C.They wanted to earn others’ respect.

D.They carried out their father’s last wish.

【2】What made the girls pretend to be boys?

    A.The pressure from their father.

    B.The experience in doing business.

    C.The discrimination against women.

    D.The requirement of some customers.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.The story of the girls’ made the public frightened.

B.A paper from their city first reported the girls’ story.

C.Most customers now refuse to accept the girls’ service.

D.The girls are highly thought of for their efforts of survival.

  • 22、   A new study has found that cats can connect with people in the same way as dogs and children. The research, published in Current Biology, suggests the social abilities of cats to form human attachments has been greatly underestimated. The study notes that more cats live with humans than dogs do worldwide. But historically, more scientific research has centered on the social relationships between people and dogs.

The researchers designed experiments similar to methods used to measure human attachment behaviors. For example, other studies have observed how babies react to being reunited with caregivers after being separated for short periods.

About 70 cats were studied. The hehavior of the animals was observed by experts who divided them into two groups.64 percent were judged to be “securely attached”to caregivers, while 36 percent were found to be “insecurely attached.”The cats with secure attachments showed several signs of “reduced stress”levels, the study found. These cats were found to be more comfortable and effectively balanced their attention between the person and their surroundings. However, the cats with an insecure attachment showed clear signs of stress. These included shaking of the tail, repeated licking or staying completely away from the caregiver.

She added that the results showed that the level of secure and insecure attachments in cats is very close to those measured in human babies. In humans, research has found that 65 percent of babies are also securely attached to their caregivers. The researchers also were interested in finding out if socialization training would change the results.

But after a six-week training program for the cats, there were no major differences. “Once an attachment style has been established between the cat and its caregiver, it appears to remain relatively stable overtime, even after a training and socialization intervention(干预), ”Vitale  said.

1What does the study mentioned in this passage show?

A.Catssocial ability is little thought of.

B.Dogs have more sociable personalities than cats.

C.Historically, dog is much smarter than cats.

D.Cats have bad social relationships with dogs.

2What will happen if the cats feel unsafe?

A.They tend to attack their caregivers.

B.They are going to shake their tails.

C.They will stay close to their caretakers.

D.They are likely to balance their attention.

3What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Attachment level in babies is higher than in cats.

B.Training program plays an important role in the results.

C.Researchers feel insecure when experimenting with cats.

D.Its hard to make changes to attachment styles between cats and caregivers.

  • 23、Critics of higher education often complain that universities offer too many worthless degrees with little value in the workplace. Since top universities tend to produce higher-earning graduates than less selective institutions do, you might expect them to teach more practical courses. Yet data from Britain's department for education show the opposite. Undergraduate students at leading universities are more likely to study purely academic fields such as philosophy and classics, whereas those at less choosy ones tend to pick career-related topics such as business or nursing.

What could explain this seeming contradiction? One reason is that employers treat a degree from a top university as an indicator of intelligence. This means that students at top institutions can study bookish subjects and still get by financially. The average Cambridge graduate in a creative-arts subject - tho university's least profitable group of courses, including fields such as music - earns around £25, 000 ($32, 400) at age 26. Economics students from less well-known universities, such as Hull, make a similar amount.

Yet even though Oxbridge students can pretend to read "Ulysses" for years and still expect a decent salary, they end up paying a large opportunity cost by pursuing the arts. That is because employers reserve the highest starting wages for students who both attended a leading university and also studied a marketable subject. Cambridge creative-arts graduates earn £11, 000 more at age 26 than do those from Wrexham Glyndwr University, whose arts graduates are the lowest-earning in Britain. In contrast, Cambridge economics graduates make £44, 000 more than those from the University of Salford, where the economics course is the country's least profitable.

Many gifted arts students would struggle to deal with numbers. But for those who can manage both, the cost of sticking with the arts, in terms of future wages, is steep. Cambridge creative-arts students have A-level scores close to those of economics students at Warwick, but earn about half as much. That is equal to giving up an annual income worth £50, 000.

【1】What do critics think of British higher education?

A.There are not enough qualified university graduates.

B.University should produce more higher-earning graduates.

C.All universities degrees are of little value in the workplace.

D.Universities should offer more practical education to their students.

【2】According to the passage, which student probably gets the highest starting wage?

    A.A Hull economics graduate.

    B.An Oxford arts graduate.

    C.A Cambridge economics graduate.

    D.A Salford arts graduate.

【3】What can we can infer from the last paragraph?

A.Cambridge creative-arts students struggle to deal with numbers.

B.Studying a "useless" field at Cambridge costs a fortune in future earnings.

C.Economics students at Warwick can expect an annual income worth £25, 000.

D.Economics students at Warwick have A-level scores close to Cambridge students.

  • 24、“We need to shampoo the patient s hair,” said Kristen, a physician assistant. Operating room nurse Jess seconded the idea. With the two of them advocating, it needed to happen.

Somehow for the last 23 years, as a man with short hair, I’d always considered a wash with water to be enough to clean a patient’s hair after surgery. We would wash it the day after. That’s just how we’d done things. But why not wash it in the operating room before the patient wakes up? The literature suggests no danger, so I went along with Kristen and Jess, and bought good shampoo.

The first time we did it, it seemed a little time-wasting. If it was about surgical cleanliness, it wasn’t required. As we continued to wash the patient’s hair, I began to notice the effect it had on everyone else in the room. The shampoo transformed the room to a spa for just a few minutes. The patient was the subject of the cleansing, but we benefited too. It was a quiet, collective feeling, knowing that we were finishing our work well. The sweet smell of washing fixed that in our minds.

Patients say they don’t care about hair, but they do. It can be a symbol of power or beauty, as with Samson or Rapunzel. A contemporary example, hair in Namwali Serpell’s novel The Old Drifts serves as a symbol of individual and personality. People definitely care about their hair.

Washing the hair with nice shampoo symbolizes the beginning of some kind of recovery, a return to a new normal for the patient, cleansing away the misfortune that caused them to need me.

We sent the patient out of the room with clean hair, knowing and showing that we’d cared for them well. The patient is more than a case—they’re a fellow human, after all. A postsurgical shampoo seems like a good talisman (护身符), and it’s not time-wasting.

【1】What can we learn about the first hair-washing experience in the operating room?

A.The patient was a man with short hair.

B.The idea was first put forward by Jess

C.The experience was a total waste of time.

D.The author realized various benefits afterwards.

【2】What’s the author’ s purpose in writing paragraph 4?

A.To explain the power of beauty.

B.To show what hair means to people.

C.To introduce a classic book about hair.

D.To discuss the effect of hair on personality.

【3】What will the author probably do in the future?

    A.Wash patients’ hair before surgery.

    B.Stop wasting time on hair-washing.

    C.Continue to shampoo patients’ hair.

D.Give patients talismans for good luck.

【4】Which of the following best describes the author as a doctor?

    A.Honest.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Caring.

    D.Generous.
