21、Sending rockets into space requires sacrificing expensive equipment, burning massive amounts of fuel, and risking potential catastrophe. So in the space race of the 21st century, some engineers are abandoning rockets for something much more exciting: elevators.
Imagine hopping on a fast-spinning carousel (旋转木马) while holding a rope attached to a rock. As long as the carousel keeps spinning, the rock and rope will remain horizontal, kept in the air by centrifugal force (离心力). If we replace the carousel with the Earth, the rope with a long cable, and the rock with a counterweight, we can imagine the modern space elevator—a cable pulled into space by the physics of our spinning planet. For this to work, the counterweight would need to be far enough away that the centrifugal force generated by the Earth’s spin is greater than the planet’s gravity. These forces balance out at roughly 36,000 kilometers above the surface, so the counterweight should be beyond this height. The resultant force on objects at this specific distance is evidently zero, leaving the objects in geostationary orbit, which means they revolve around the Earth at the same rate the planet spins, thus appearing motionless in the sky.
The counterweight itself could be anything. From here, the cable could be released down through the atmosphere and connected to a base station on the planet’s surface. To maximize centrifugal acceleration, this anchor point should be close to the Equator. And by making the loading station a mobile ocean base, the entire system could be moved at will, allowing it to perform around extreme weather, and avoid satellites in space. Once established, cargo could be loaded onto devices called climbers, which would pull packages along the cable and into orbit.
But the main problem lies in the cable itself. In addition to supporting a massive amount of weight, the cable’s material would have to be strong enough to stand the counterweight’s pull. And because this tension and the force of gravity would vary at different points, its strength and thickness would need to vary as well. But so far, we’ve only been able to manufacture very small nanotube (纳米碳管) chains.

【4】How might scientists solve the cable problem?
A.By operating the elevator with more cables.
B.By making the cable flexible and strengthened.
C.By reducing the counterweight’s pull on the cable.
D.By building the elevator somewhere with no gravity.
22、 After the election day in the United States, there is a period of uncertainty. Both candidates could claim victory, and misinformation about the result would go viral. Anger, fake news and hate speech on social media could cause tensions. So what is Big Tech planning to do about it?
Twitter says after election day candidates will not be permitted to claim they have won the election before a declared result. And candidates can't tweet or retweet content that affects with the election process.
What will it do if that happens?
Twitter will direct people to resources with accurate, up-to-date information about the election status. It won't take down tweets. But these tweets will be labelled.
Reddit appears to go much further than Twitter. It says information that seeks to mislead or misrepresent the election results is not allowed and would be removed from the site.
Reddit also has an entire page committed to what happens after the election. The site will host a series of "Ask Me Anything" events from the day after the election. Voting experts will be on hand to answer questions about the vote, and what people can expect in the coming days.
YouTube
YouTube says it will not allow "misleading claims about voting or content that encourages interference in the process".
It also says it will remove false content that aims to change the results of an election. That goes further than Twitter and Reddit. Users will face the biggest punishment. YouTube will shut down the account permanently that posts misleading information if necessary.
TikTok
TikTok says it is working with independent fact checkers during the election period.
It says it will remove misinformation related to the 2020 election including the vote itself. It is also adding an election misinformation option to in-app reporting so that users can flag content.
In short, all these social media companies are treating the election, and its aftermath very seriously. We may know in a few days whether these measures are enough.
【1】What does Twitter do with the tweets?
A.It takes down tweets. B.It permits any tweets.
C.It removes misinformation. D.It guides people to reliable resources.
【2】What makes Reddit different from other Apps?

C.To remove misleading information. D.To be working with independent fact checkers.
【3】Which of the following Apps will give the most serious punishment?
A.Twitter B.Reddit C.YouTube D.TikTok
23、Regarded as the “loneliest tree in the world”, the Sitka spruce (云杉) on uninhabited Campbell Island lately has kept good company with a team of New Zealand researchers who believe it could help unlock secrets of climate changes.
The nine-meter-tall spruce holds the Guinness Record title for the “remotest tree” on the planet. It is the sole tree on the shrubby, windswept island, 700 kilometers south of New Zealand in the Southern Ocean. It’s the only tree for 222km around; its nearest neighbor grows on the Auckland Islands.
Although classified as an invasive species, for radiocarbon science leader at GNS Science, Dr. Jocelyn Turnbull, the tree could be a valuable tool to understand what is happening with the uptake of CO2 in the Southern Ocean. In order to measure CO2 concentrations, taking samples of the atmosphere is the best method, and can be complemented with radiocarbon dating samples of deep water. But it comes with limitations. “You can’t collect air that was there 30 years ago, because it is not there anymore,” Turnbull said, “So we came up with this idea of using tree rings. Plants, when they grow, take CO2 out of the air by photosynthesis (光合作用) and they use that to grow their structures and the carbon from the air ends up in the tree rings.”
This is helpful when there is an abundance of established trees, but those are a rarity in the Southern Ocean. Enter the Sitka Spruce - the south most tree, and the team could find it would offer up good data. “It’s grown a lot faster than anything else in that region and the rings are bigger and easier to separate out and get a record form.”
As for the tree’s lonely status: the description may be in the eye of the beholder. “To get to the tree you have to walk through elephant seals and sea lions, penguins and albatross,” Turnbull said. “The tree doesn’t look lonely …it looks quite content actually.”
【1】What is special about the tree?
A.It measures nine meters wide.
B.It is the only tree on a vast land.
C.It grows on the Auckland Islands.
D.It owns the Guinness title for the “loneliest tree”.

A.CO2 builds up in the tree rings.
B.The Sitka spruce is a native species.
C.Samples from water are usually inaccessible.
D.Photosynthesis stops the plants absorbing air.
【3】What may Turnbull support?
A.The tree coexists with a variety of animals.
B.The tree grows well because of suitable climate.
C.It’s unwise to use tree rings as an indicator of CO2.
D.It’s possible to measure previous CO2 concentrations directly.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Trees are of great significance to scientific research.
B.The “loneliest” tree in the world is not lonely at all.
C.Global warming has a far-reaching impact on creatures.
D.A remote Sitka spruce may help us learn about climate changes.
24、When making choices, people assume that they pick what they like. However, research suggests that we like something strictly because we have chosen it. In other words, we dislike things we don’t choose. And this phenomenon has existed since we were babies.
In an experiment, US researchers brought several 10-to 20-month-old babies into a lab and gave them two same bright and colorful soft blocks to play with. They set each block far apart, so the babies had to crawl (爬) to one or the other—a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick either the toy they didn’t play with before, or a brand new toy. It turned out that the babies reliably chose to play with the new toy rather than the one they had not chosen.
In follow-up experiments, when researchers instead helped choose which toy the baby would play with, the phenomenon disappeared. “As if they were saying, ‘Hmm, I didn’t choose that object last time, because I guess I didn’t like it very much,” said Lisa Feigenson, co-author of the study.
This is a very important phenomenon in life, Feigenson noted. Adults will less like the thing they didn’t choose, even if they had no real preference in the first place. It looks like babies do just the same.
It shows that the act of making choices changes how we feel about our options. The random choices might become our preferences. “They are really not choosing based on whether they are novel or what they prefer,” said Alex Silver, co-author of the study.
This new finding explains why adults build unconscious preference when they make choices between the same things. Justifying (证明有道理) choice is somehow fundamental to the human experience. “I chose this, so I must like it. I didn’t choose the other thing, so it can not be so good. Adults make these inferences unconsciously,” Feigenson said.
【1】What is the purpose of the experiments?
A.To test whether people choose what they like.
B.To see why babies prefer new toys to old ones.
C.To explain how babies and adults make choices differently.
D.To study if too many choices could create problems for people.
【2】What can be learned from the experiments?
A.Babies prefer bright and colorful toys.
B.Babies’ preference largely affects their choices.
C.Babies prefer adults to help them make choices .

A.It entirely changes our attitude to our choices.
B.It helps us make wise decisions in a consumer culture.
C.It promotes the relationship between adults and babies.
D.It helps us understand our unconscious preference for choices.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Babies like what they choose
B.Random choices matter
C.Too many choices puzzle the adults
D.Preference affects the choice
