二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Love, joy, and the warm feeling of pulling together to get through tough times don’t cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So, what’s a poor family to do?

When Christmas season rolled around again, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted was a pogo-stick (弹簧单高跷). However, my mother told me they were too expensive and that we simply couldn’t afford one.

On a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks before Christmas, my mom and dad told me we needed to go to Sears to pay our-credit card bill. While my mother and I were at the counter paying the bill, my dad said, “I’ll be right back — I need to see something in the tool department.” A little later, my dad came back with a long box. I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo-stick in that box.

When we arrived back at home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box my bright, shiny pogo-stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom. And so Christmas morning was both great and disappointing. I got some nice gifts but I didn't get the present that I really wanted.

After all the wrapping paper was cleaned up my dad said he needed to tend to something in the garage. When he came back in, he was carrying a beautiful pogo-stick. I couldn’t believe it! My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on me.

Although we didn’t have much money, my parents gave me the most important gift of all: lots of love. My dad worked hard to provide for us and my mother knew how to stretch a dollar. That was over 60 years ago and I still think about those wonderful Christmas memories every year during the holiday season. My parents were the best and I will never forget all the joy they brought into my life.

【1】Why did the author’s mother refuse to give him a pogo-stick?

A.They’re dangerous for kids to play with.

B.They didn’t have enough money to buy one.

C.She had already bought him another gift.

D.He already had too many pogo-sticks.

【2】How did the author probably feel before he opened the box?

    A.Amazed.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Doubtful.

【3】What does the author think the most valuable gift he received from his parents was?

    A.Their unconditional love.

    B.His pogo-stick.

C.The ability to get through tough times.

D.All the great memories of Christmas

  • 27、   Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported rubbish from other countries to keep its recycling plants going. Less than 1% of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills(垃圾填埋场) last year or any year since 2011.

We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is why we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under The Landfill Tax of 1996.

Sweden has a culture of looking after the environment. “We Swedish people are aware of what we need to do on environmental issues. We worked on communications for long to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and reuse,” says Anna-Carin Gripwall, director of communications for Avfall Sverige, the Swedish Waste Management’s recycling association.

Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the freezing Swedish winter.

However, some people argue that the country is escaping real recycling. Paper plant managers say wood fiber can be used up to six times before it becomes dust. If Sweden burns paper before that point, it’s exhausting the potential for true recycling and replacing used paper with fresh raw material.

Ms Gripwall describes Sweden’s policy of importing waste to recycle from other countries as a temporary situation. “There’s a ban on landfill in EU countries, so instead of paying the fine they send it to us as a service. They should and will build their own plants, to reduce their own waste, as we’re doing in Sweden,” Ms Gripwall says.

1Why is a low amount of household waste sent to landfills in Sweden?

A.A little bit of household waste is produced here.

B.Its people get waste recycled at home.

    C.Much rubbish is imported overseas.

D.They have good public environmental awareness.

2What measure is taken in the UK to deal with waste according to the text?

A.An effective recycling system is adopted.

B.People are encouraged to sell rubbish abroad.

C.People are forbidden to send waste to landfills.

D.An increasing number of landfills are being built.

3What can we infer about Sweden’s recycling system?

A.It’s being spread around the world.

B.It’s also thought to have some shortcomings.

C.It’s so perfect to receive good evaluation.

D.It solves the problems with the local energy.

4What opinion should Ms Gripwall hold according to the text?

A.It’s partly wrong to import rubbish from other countries.

B.The technology of handling waste will be developed wildly.

C.It’s possible to completely solve all environmental problems.

D.All countries should work together to protect the environment.

  • 28、   There are many differences in the way different cultures raise kids. International visitors can’t help but notice the fact that children are special in China. However, the way some Chinese people treat these very special kids may shock some foreign visitors.

When I told a Chinese mother her child was beautiful, I was nonplussed when she replied, “ No, she’s not; she’s ugly.” Since that time I have heard many similar comments, including, “No, he’s not bright; he’s stupid.” This is a huge cultural difference that needs to be understood when you talk about kids with your international visitors.

Someone explained it to me, “ We Chinese don’t want to appear too proud.” I’m sure there are other people in the world who feel the same way, but most people in my country would consider you a terrible parent if you said your kid was stupid or ugly. They would think you were destroying the child’s self-confidence. When we Americans say something good about our child we don’t think we are being proud because we are saying it about the child, not about ourselves. In this way, we separate the child from the parents as two different persons.

You may think I sound too proud when I freely say to another westerner: “ My daughter is smart and pretty.” Of course, I still have to teach her not to be proud, but I can be proud of her. It’s just the way she was made, and I’m thankful for that. So, in the US when we say something nice about our own kids, it is not considered being too proud but rather, being thankful and being a good parent.

1What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Hopeful B.Worried

    C.Regretful D.Surprised

2When US parents praise their child in front of others, they _____

A.often feel proud of themselves B.try to build the kid’s confidence

C.just say something nice about the kid D.have similar feelings as Chinese parents

3What can we infer about the author?

A.He is from the US. B.He is visiting America

C.He is a Chinese parent. D.He is an expert in education.

4What is mainly discussed in the text?

A.How different cultures in the world raise kids.

B.How Chinese and US parents talk about kids.

C.How US parents feel about themselves.

    D.How different countries treat kids.

  • 29、Every summer, my family and I visit our relatives in India and whenever we travel, my parents always remind me to drink only bottled or boiled water. On one of my trips to India, I saw children drinking water from the roadside. I was troubled to learn that millions of people, most of them children in developing countries, die each year because of water related diseases.

Living in the US, I am lucky to be able to turn on the tap and get potable water(饮用水), while one sixth of the world's population lacks access to clean water. This year, I entered the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. In late June, I learned that I was selected as one of the top 10 national finalists of this famous middle school science competition. Over the summer, I worked with Dr. Jim Jonza, my Scientist mentor(导师) from 3M, and developed a system that uses solar energy to purify water. My invention is green and cost effective, and I am looking forward to implementing this in places that are affected(影响) by harmful water pollution.

In October, my family and I flew to 3M Headquarters in St Paul, Minnesota, where the final event was to be held. For the last challenge, each of us had to present the invention we had been working on over the summer. The first place winner would win $25,000, a trip to Costa Rica, and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. At the awards ceremony, all of us waited anxiously until one of the judges, Danny Forester, started announcing “The winner of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is.... ”You could hear a pin(大头针) drop as he opened the paper with the winner’ s name, “Deepika Kurup!”

As America’s Top Young Scientist, I was given an opportunity to show my invention on national television and deliver several presentations. One of the most important things I have learned is that communication and teamwork are key to success.

When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What’s that old lady doing?” I asked Emily, pointing out the window to the street in front of the house.

Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She’s picking up rubbish around here for fun.” “Oh,” I answered. “Interesting… Why would someone think picking up rubbish was fun?” For a long time, often saw that old lady—rain or shine—on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However, I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.

Later, when I moved to college, I’d see rubbish in the grass and feel really angry about it. I’d think, “Why isn’t anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty?” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).

So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help out.

Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing it, I began to think, “If I could pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”

But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.
