二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、To make sure everything is OK with the elderly citizens living alone, community workers on Jiangsu Street in Shanghai recently equipped them with smart devices on water taps. If an elderly citizen uses less than 0.01m3 of water in around 12 hours, the device will automatically send an alarm to the community workers, who will then rush to check. Meanwhile, they also plan to install a device on the doors of the lonely elderly citizens to remind them of shutting the doors for a certain length of time.

The move has won much applause (掌声) on social networking sites, with many praising a major example of technology serving people and calling for its application across the country.

Smart devices indeed make our lives better, but the key element in the Shanghai experience is not technology, but the human touch. Installing smart devices on water taps and doors is not difficult. All one needs is a sensor, a SIM card, and a coding allowing it to make calls. However, no one knows when an emergency occurs. One needs to ensure that a community worker is waiting behind the system to hear the alarm which could go off late in the night or at lawn. When getting the alarm, the worker must go and have a check.

To ensure that the system works smoothly, community workers have to be there on duty 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Therefore, it is the community workers’ devotion, and not so much the smart device, that plays the most important part in the whole system by caring for the elderly citizens.

Of course, the contribution of those who came up with the idea should not be forgotten. It might be a good idea to reward them so that they can be encouraged to do even better.

【1】What’s the purpose of equipping smart devices for the lonely elderly people?

A.To check the amount of water used.

B.To send an alarm to the elderly citizens.

C.To ensure the elderly’s health and safety.

D.To help the community workers to do their jobs.

【2】Which of the following best describe people’s attitude to installing smart devices?

    A.Doubtful

    B.Opposed.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Appreciative

【3】What plays a vital part in carrying out this move?

    A.The device installing techniques.

    B.The technology itself.

    C.The community workers’ devotion.

    D.The operating system.

【4】What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.How to help the lonely elderly equip smart devices.

B.How to use smart devices to care for the lonely elderly.

C.How to take care of the lonely elderly in the community.

D.How to work for the lonely elderly as a community worker.

  • 27、When I was growing up in Dallas, there was only one activity that could get me, my mom and dad, and my three siblings (兄弟姐妹) to stop going in six different directions and all pay attention to the same thing. It wasn’t celebrating holidays. It wasn’t watching Dallas Cowboys games. It was any time one of the kids had to do a science experiment for school.

Both my parents worked for NASA. I remember when my little sister tried to grow jars of mold (霉菌) in her room, my mom liked to check her progress every day. Another time, we were packed into the car in the middle of the night to watch the Apollo launches at a family friend^ house. Sure, my parents had worked on the project, but this was something our family did because we believed in exploration, whether we were exploring the surface of the moon or a jars of mold.

When I became a mom, I realized that I didn't have a carefully thought-out plan for every situation that arose. But I tried to carry on the tradition of science experiments at home. We had a habit of “Science Saturdays” for a long time. And as the kids are growing up, I am so proud of the way they look at the world, as a series of wonders to discover.

I think all children are naturally curious. But I’m not sure they all have the confidence to ask and answer hard questions. Many children worry that they aren’t creative or smart enough. That’s part of what great parents can do: help young people overcome self-doubt, awaken their curiosity, and encourage them to do whatever is in their heart.

【1】What made the author’s families get together?

    A.Having holidays.

    B.Making family trips.

    C.Watching spoils games.

    D.Doing science experiments.

【2】What is the mother's reaction when the little sister tried to grow mold in the room?

    A.She stopped her at once.

    B.She was quite supportive.

    C.She was doubtful about it.

    D.She helped her make progress.

【3】What happened to the author’s own kids?

A.They lost curiosity as they grew up.

B.They were not interested in science at first.

C.They made important discoveries in later life.

D.They were influenced by the author's love for science.

【4】What is the purpose of the author in writing the text?

A.To show the importance of science.

B.To show love and thanks to her parents.

C.To ask readers to get kids curious about things.

D.To describe how she became interested in science.

  • 28、Multiple measures have been taken to fight food waste, but a young man is making a big difference with technology.

Liu Jichen, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a Wechat mini-program called Clear Your Plate. After a meal, users can open the mini-program and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the image is recognized by the AI, students can collect points and use them to buy gifts or charity meals which will be donated to children in poor rural areas. Liu and his team launched the Clear Your Plate campaign in November, 2020 for the third year. It has swept over 1,017 universities across the country. The one-month campaign attracted almost 1.6 million participants and collectively reduced food waste by 862 tons and carbon emissions by 3,337 tons.

The idea, to develop such a mini-program came from Liu's experience in a canteen. In 2017, he found that a restaurant would give diners who finished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected. “Technological innovation is a good way to reduce food waste, ”Liu thought. He organized a team of 20 members to work on the proiect at the end of 2017. To solve the AI’s problem of identifying photos of empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples in canteens and restaurants. In 2018. the mini-program was officially put into operation. They then launched a campaign later that year.

There were so many unknowns in research and development. For our team members. the biggest psychological challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it, ”said Liu Now, they have achieved their goal, and the mini-program has more than five million registered users.

“We hope that our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation by encour-aging them to cherish their food and develop the habit of thrift,” Liu said.“ Through the campaign, we hope to inspire everyone to take action against food waste and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global food security challenges.”

  • 29、Is it possible to make paper without trees? Australian businessmen Kevin Garcia and John Tse were determined to find out. They spent a year researching a possible alternative that could serve as a possible raw material for making paper.

“What if we re - engineer how paper is made to be more in line with our environmental responsibility?” asked Garcia. Then Garcia read about a Taiwanese company making paper out of stone and inspiration struck. A year later, in July 2017, they launched Karst Stone Paper. The company produces paper without using wood, water or chemicals with terrible smell. Their source is stone waste mined from construction sites and other industrial waste places.

“If you look at the whole process of how paper is traditionally made, it involves cutting trees, adding chemicals and bleach to make pulp (纸浆), using lots of water and then squeezing, drying and flattening it into sheets of paper,” said Garcia. “It contributes to high deforestation and carbon emission (抖、放).”

The pulp and paper industry uses over 40% of all industrial wood traded globally, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Karst, based in Sydney, aims to reduce the rate of deforestation with its sustainably-made paper goods.

In 2019, Garcia estimated (估计) Karst’s paper production helped save 540 large trees from being cut down, 83, 100 liters of water from being used and 25, 500 kilograms of carbon dioxide from being emitted.

“We collect abandoned limestone from wherever we can find it, wash it and ground it into fine powder,” Garcia said, “The powder is mixed with HDPE resin (高密度聚乙烯树脂). The paste-like mixture is finally turned into thin sheets of paper. The carbon emission from this process is about 67% less than making paper from tree pulp,” he said.

【1】The first paragraph is intended to __________.

A.It develops materials for making paper.

B.It just aims to make great profits.

C.It produces paper in conventional ways.

D.It makes paper from stone waste.

【3】The underline word “deforestation” in paragraph 3 most probably mean “__________”.

    A.destroying the forests

    B.planting the trees

    C.wasting the pulp
