二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Lord Robert Winston was sitting on a train, when he found himself becoming steadily angry. Winston is normally a fairly amiable man. What was driving him slowly crazy was the particular behavior of another passenger. Ignoring the child with her, the woman had picked up her phone and begun what would become a very loud conversation filled with boring facts.

Winston did try to ignore it, but there is something fundamentally unignorable about a loud, one-sided conversation. It was then that Lord Winston made a mistake. He began to tweet (网上发) about the woman. He took photos of her and sent them out to his more than 40,000 followers.

When the train had finally arrived at its destination, Winston quickly ran off. He had had enough of what he described as her "rudeness." But the woman faced an unusual surprise. The press had picked up on Winston's tweets. They were waiting for her on the platform. When they excitedly showed her Winston's messages, the woman's face fell. She also suddenly found herself using just one word to describe Winston's actions: "rude".

We find ourselves living at a time of incredible rudeness. Social media has taught the world that it needs to have an opinion, on everything,at all times. Reality television has taught us to celebrate meanness (不友好), so long as that meanness is delivered as “honesty.” So what can we do about the rising tide of rudeness?

Winston shone a spotlight on that woman's behaviors, but he did not confront it, and he did not stop it. Instead, that spotlight was shone weakly from afar, shaming her by taking an almost rudimentary (原始的) form of revenge. Often, the trick to handling rudeness is far more elegant, and can be done with the gentle delivery of a sentence as simple as “just stop.”

When we see it happen in a store, we must step up and say, "Just stop." If it happens to a colleague, we must point it out. Because once a rude person has had the looking glass held up to them and can see their actions through the eyes of others, they are far more likely to end that behavior themselves.

【1】What does the underlined word "amiable" most probably mean?

    A.Selfless.

    B.Open-minded.

    C.Cooperative.

    D.Mild-mannered.

【2】Which of the following does the author agree with?

A.Winston should have pointed out the woman's rudeness to her face.

B.Winston is actually as rude as the woman with his behavior.

C.The woman shouldn't have ignored Winston's anger over her behavior.

D.Being rude is widely accepted as being honest in the society.

【3】What is the purpose of this text?

A.To argue against a point of view.

    B.To introduce a social phenomenon.

C.To offer solutions to a social problem.

D.To express concerns over a social problem.

【4】What's the best title of this article?

    A.Before You Are Rude

    B.When Someone Is Rude

    C.If They Can End It

    D.Unless You Can Stop Rudeness

  • 27、Noise created by humans, such as car traffic, quieted by about 30% between late March and early May, 2020, when Governor Greg Abbott closed schools and restaurants across Texas, according to analysis by researchers at Southern Methodist University (SMU).

“There was quite a big change in some areas,” said Stephen Arrowsmith, a seismologist at SMU, who took on the project with a class of undergraduate and graduate students. Arrowsmith and his students looked at data from a dozen seismometers (地震仪) across North Texas. Seismometers are used to detect earthquakes, but they are sensitive to just about everything that makes the ground vibrate, such as strong winds, ocean waves, construction and traffic.

The innovative idea of using seismometers to track urban noise gained popularity last March when Belgian seismologist Thomas Lecocq posted some of his urban noise data from Brussels on Twitter. Lecocq, of the Royal Observatory of Belgium, received such an enthusiastic response from scientists that he launched the group “Lockdown Seismology” online. “It’s where bored seismologists around the world are working together,” Arrowsmith joked.

Arrowsmith hopes his findings will contribute to a growing list of creative ways in which researchers are using seismometers. In his course, Arrowsmith teaches students how seismic stations can help investigators solve crimes, like terrorist bombings, aid scientists in tracking nuclear tests or assist inspectors in investigating accidents, like chemical plant explosions. One potential application of his research is to better understand the shallow layers of Earth beneath cities. “That could be useful in places where there’s a real seismic hazard, like San Francisco or Los Angeles,” he said, “where just knowing what that shallow structure is tells you a lot about how it would respond in a big earthquake.”

【1】What did the researchers do to obtain the data of noise in Texas?

    A.They observed car traffic.

    B.They surveyed their students.

    C.They consulted the governor.

    D.They employed Seismometers.

【2】What is a direct result of Lecocq’s posting some of his urban noise data?

    A.Urban noise is reduced.

    B.Crime investigation is simplified.

    C.Seismologists are attracted.

    D.Earthquake detection is improved.

【3】What does the underlined word “hazard” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Risk.

    B.Spot.

    C.Assistance.

    D.Report.

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning the seismometer?

    A.Its possible risks.

    B.Its potential applications.

    C.Its appeal to the public.

    D.Its market value.

  • 28、In Singapore, authorities are looking at the possibility of digging deeper underground to create new space for human activity. The demand for underground lighting is therefore expected to rise in the future. Fortunately, a team of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) researchers has designed a “smart” device to harvest daylight and relay it to underground spaces, trimming the need to draw on traditional energy sources for lighting.

To develop the daylight harvesting device that can sustainably handle the problem, the NTU team drew inspiration from the magnifying (放大) glass, which can be used to focus sunlight into one point. The device sits above ground and just like the lens of a magnifying glass, the acrylic ball acts as the solar concentrator, enabling the sun’s rays to form a sharp focus at its opposite side. The focused sunlight is then collected into one end of a fiber cable (电缆) and transported along it to the end that is fixed underground.

As the sun moves across the sky throughout the day, so will the position of the focused sunlight inside the acrylic ball. To ensure that maximum sunlight is being collected and transported down the fiber cable throughout the day, the system uses a computer chip-based mechanism to track the sun’s rays. The Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the device location are preloaded into the system, allowing it to determine the spot where maximum sunlight should be focused at any given time. Two small motors assisted by computer chips are then used to adjust the position of the fiber to catch and transport sunlight from the focused spot.

Assistant Professor Yoo Seongwoo, lead author of the study said, “Our innovation is made of commercially available off-the-shelf materials, making it potentially very easy to produce at scale. We have intentionally designed the device to be lightweight and compact, which makes it convenient for our device to be combined with existing facilities in the urban environment.”

Moreover, the NTU researchers found the device’s luminous (发光的) efficiency far exceeds that of commercially available LED bulbs recorded in experiments. The quality of the light output of the NTU smart device is also comparable with current commercially available daylight harvesting systems which are far more costly.

【1】What does the underlined word in Paragraph I mean?

    A.Meeting.

    B.Reducing.

  • 29、In many regions of Ghana, it can take hours to get to the nearest hospital. As a result, many people lose their lives to treatable illnesses. Osei Boateng experienced this personally when he lost his grandmother and aunt. Feeling an urgent call to help, Boateng decided he would make it his life mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana.

Boateng started his nonprofit, OKB Hope Foundation 2 years ago, he converted a van (厢式货车) into a mobile doctor’s office and started bringing health care directly to those in need. A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distance to remote communities in Ghana and provide free routine medical care.

On each trip, Boateng’s team consists of a nurse, a physician’s assistant, a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork as well as prescribe and provide medications. “It’s like a one-stop shop for people,” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another.

Since its launch, Boateng says the Hope Health Van has served more than 4,000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don’t have easily accessible medical care. Boateng has big plans for the future. He hopes to expand to provide more consistent and high-quality mobile medical care not only to those living in remote areas of Ghana but in other countries as well.

Boateng has gone all in on his OKB Hope Foundation, recently quitting his job to dedicate his time to bringing health care to his home country. I got off the bus and ran all the way home. It was officially Christmas vacation. Opening the door, a wave of warm air and smells of pine and oranges welcomed me. I smiled, removing my coat and bag-Christmas was just about here.

Just then I heard an exciting voice. "You're home! Come play with me!" Melissa, my baby sister, sat on the living room floor, surrounded by an army of Barbies. She looked at me eagerly, waiting for my response.

I was going to be in high school in just two years. I felt too old for Barbies and other childish things. I hesitated, trying to think of an excuse that wouldn't make her cry, when a sudden idea came to my mind. "I'll play with you," I said, "if you let me play with the red car." The red car was what Melissa loved most.

Melissa quickly grabbed the car. "No!" she screamed. She never let anyone else play with the car. "Well I said, pleased with my cleverness," "I guess I can't play with you today." As I started walking to my room, Melissa called out to me, "Have you got my Christmas present yet?"

"Not yet, but I will," I said. "I've got what I'm giving you," said Melissa She smiled and added. "it's going to be the best present ever!" "I' m sure it will," I said flatly. I still remembered the handful of candies she had wrapped and handed to me the year before.

The days leading up to Christmas went by quickly. The whole family spent Christmas morning exchanging gifts. I had bought Melissa a cheap toy cat at the local Dollar Store. It was not a surprise to her, but I was pleased that she liked it. When the process of exchanging gifts was over, Dad joked, "We need a dump truck for all of this wrapping paper." He held the broom, preparing to sweep the floor.
