26、In August 2020, Kate Wilson, a 16-year-old from Shrewsbury, posted on the social media video platform TikTok a series of sentences from books she had read. Set to a piece of soft music, the short video plays out as Wilson holds up copies of the books. “You have been the last dream of my soul,” from A Tale of Two Cities(双城计). “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” from Wuthering Heights(呼啸山庄). It has been viewed more than million times.
These posts, called BookTok, can attract millions of views, and light an appreciation of books in young readers again. “I started reading again after six years when I came across BookTok for the first time last October,” says Mireille Lee, 15.
Adam Silvera’s 2017 novel They Both Die at the End is one of the books to have benefited from the BookTok effect. In March, it shot to the top of the teen fiction charts, selling more than 4,000 copies a week. The book has sold more than 200,000 copies in the UK after thousands of posts about it.
Publishers are watching with interest. Publisher Horrox says: “There’s something about the fact that it is under a minute. People who are consuming this content watch a 32-second video and someone’s like: ‘This book has romance, and it’s really heartbreaking. Thankfully, it’s only a fiction.’ And then the viewers think: ‘Those are all things that I’m interested in. I’ll go and buy it.’” By December 2020, Wilson was being contacted regularly by publishers, who had realized that TikTok “really does sell books.”
Jenny is 22, and says: “I thought Tiktok was ridiculous last year before the first lockdown(限制). I really did think it was just for 14-year-olds, but BookTok is such a lovely community. There are people who like the same books as me, and I can talk about the books that I like. It just seems a little bit magical.”

27、India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday developed a series of new high-producing rice species, including herbicide-tolerant(耐除草剂的)rice that can be directly planted into the soil, cutting the huge expenses on water and farm workers.
In India, the world's biggest rice exporter, the traditional method of rice growing requires farmers to grow seeds in nurseries, and then wait for 20 to 30 days before transplanting the small plants by hand into the fields that are ankle-deep in water.
With the new seed species, developed by the state-run Indian Agricultural Research Institute, farmers only need to water the field once to moisten(使湿润)the soil before planting the rice. Besides, the traditional method also uses a lot of water to control weeds as herbicides are costly and often do not distinguish between the rice and the unwanted weeds.
Government scientists said the new rice species contains a gene that would allow farmers to use a common, inexpensive herbicide without worrying about any side effects. “Our focus is very high on new seeds that can be adapted to new conditions, especially in changing climates,” Modi said.
Water conservation is likely to be the main attraction of the new rice species in India, where farmers rely heavily on monsoon(季风)rains. “The traditional method uses 3,000 to 5,000 liters(升)of water to produce 1 kg of rice. The new species could cut water use by at least 50% to 60%,” farmers and government officials say. "For farmers like us, the main concern was the management of water, and the new species takes care of that concern," said Ravindra Kajal, who grows rice on his 9-acre farmland in the northern state of Haryana.
【1】What is the advantage of the new rice species?
A.It can remove all the weeds.
B.It can be planted in any field.
C.It needs less water to grow.
D.It needs less soil to grow.
【2】Why can farmers use a common herbicide to the new rice species?
A.Because the new crop species contains herbicide itself.
B.Because the new crop species resists a common herbicide.
C.Because the common herbicide is relatively cheaper.
D.Because the common herbicide can moisten the soil.
【3】What makes India consider planting the new rice species?
A.Its climate.
B.Its plentiful funds.
C.Its tradition.
D.Its lack of herbicide.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.India has completely changed its rice species.
B.The farmers prefer planting new rice species.
C.India is trying to promote its new rice species.
D.The new rice species produces the most rice in India.
28、Is it your dream to fly and to work in space? Do you want to be a NASA astronaut? Like many jobs, the first thing would be to fill out the application. A record-breaking 18,300 people filled out applications recently when NASA announced it was filling its 2017 Astronaut Candidate program. But out of those 18.300 applicants, just eight to 14 will be hired by the U.S. space agency.
It will take 18 months to decide who will be in the new class of astronauts. NASA will review all of the files, which will later go to its current team of astronauts, to make sure they meet the basic qualifications.
The first requirement is the applicants must be U.S. citizens. They need a college degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. They also need at least three years of experience in a similar field or at least 1,000 hours as a jet airline pilot.
There are requirements to pass a physical test. And then there are personality qualities tests as well. What kinds of personalities is NASA looking for in an astronaut? NASA’s Selection Manager Anne Roemer said, “I think leadership , teamwork, the ability to not only work on a team, lead a team, but also follow, be a follower on a team. Communication certainly plays a role, so it’s some pretty common skills that I think translate into even other professions.”
About 120 applicants will be invited to the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, for a first round of interviews, about half of whom will go back for a second round. Once selected, they must complete two years of training in everything about spaceflight-things like learning about all the systems used by NASA, walking in space and Russian language training. Until the U.S. has a working vehicle to launch into space, NASA still depends on Russia to get astronauts into space.
【1】What is the percentage of employment among the applicants?
A. About half of them B. About 8 to 14
C. About 120 applicants D. Less than 0.08 percent
【2】Which do you think is the most important personality quality according to NASA’S Selection Manager?
A. Devotion B. Team spirit
C. Communication D. Perseverance
【3】Which is NOT the basic requirement the applicants have to meet?
A. A college degree in required areas.
B. Related experience.
C. Speaking Russian fluently.
D. Passing physical and personality tests.
【4】Which may be the best title for the passage?
A. What is takes to be an astronaut?
B. What an astronaut should train in?
C. NASA welcome its most applicants ever.
D. NASA 2017 Astronaut Candidate program.
29、 Millions of Americans are living in areas at high-risk of river flooding, many of whom are completely unaware of the danger.
While the risk of coastal flooding from extreme storms and rising seas rightly attracts plenty of attention, Americans are being urged to look inland for a similar threat receiving far less recognition: river flooding. New research conducted by the University of Bristol has shown that as many as 41 million Americans are highly at risk from river floods – more than three times the number previously estimated – with real estate (住宅区) in areas such as Louisiana, Florida, Arizona and West Virginia found to be especially at threat.
For the first time, it has been possible to produce super quality flood risk maps that cover the whole United States, while previous Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood maps cover no more than 60 per cent of the country. The fine details provided by these new maps also makes it possible to predict the powerful effects of flooding on many smaller streams than before, thus raising concerns about the increasing number of people potentially threatened.
“We were all surprised by how many Americans we find are exposed to flooding from rivers,” says Oliver Wing, from the University of Bristol’s School of Geographical Sciences. “It’s particularly worrisome considering that most of these people aren’t even aware of the risk they face.”
Additionally, there is the possibility that this lack of awareness means construction in high-risk river flooding areas will continue to rise, despite the threats. Estimates (估量) suggest that projected population growth, continued urbanization trends (城市化趋势), and the unpredictable threats caused by climate change will leave over 60 million Americans vulnerable (易受攻击的) to a 100-year flood by the middle of the century. ‘All of this highlights the urgent need for large areas of floodplain and flood risk management planning,’ adds Wing.
【1】Which paragraph best supports “the risk of river flooding”?
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2.
C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.
【2】Which is true about the new maps?
A.They cover over 60 per cent of the United States.
B.They contain details of the flooding effects.
C.They make the river flooding under control.
D.They make the threats of rivers clear for the public.
【3】What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A.People need management planning against the risk.
B.Most people are aware of the risk of the river flooding.
C.Climate change is the main cause of river flooding.
D.The threats keep people from construction near river flooding areas.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.A research on the risk of river flooding.
B.The rising threats of coastal flooding.
C.Unpredictable threats caused by climate change.
D.Reasons for people’s unawareness of the risk.
