24、 In difficult times, there are always people who step up and bring people hope and confidence. One of them is Zhong Nanshan.
"Please don't travel to Wuhan unless it's absolutely necessary," Zhong Nanshan, a famous respiratory (呼吸科的) expert, reminded the public when the novel coronavirus first hit Wuhan. But despite the danger, he, an 84-year-old man, took the train to Wuhan to fight the disease.
Known as the hero who defeated SARS in 2003, Zhong's image and messages are flooding (遍布) social media. Many people say they "trust every word of Zhong". He has given Chinese people confidence in winning the battle.
A great doctor and honest scholar (学者)
Growing up in a family of doctors, Zhong lives by a simple motto (信条): save lives and always be honest. In 2003, when SARS hit China, he volunteered to treat patients and asked his colleagues (同事) to send their most serious patients to him. After months of work, his treatment plan for SARS was adopted (采纳) by China and then the whole world, saving thousands of lives, People's Daily reported.
Zhong is also known for being an honest scholar. In 2003, when authorities (官方) said that the SARS virus was under control, he publicly refuted their statement. "It's not all under control," Zhong said in a later interview. His honesty won widespread praise from the Chinese public.
Back to the frontlines
Seventeen years later, Zhong is once again leading an expert team to study the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒). Although this new virus is known to be more dangerous to the elderly, Zhong doesn't seem worried about his own safety.
On Jan 18, he took a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Two days later, he became the first expert to make certain that the new virus can be spread between humans. On January 29, he and his colleagues spent over four hours online checking five patients who were in serious condition. The next day, he chose the treatment for those patients. Under his guidance, his team developed a rapid test kit (快速检测试剂盒) for the disease that can show results within 15 minutes.
As People's Daily wrote, "the 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan shows his professionalism as a scholar, courage as a soldier, and a sense of duty as the backbone (脊梁) of our nation."

25、 Polar bears(北极熊) are in great danger. And human beings are possibly the cause of the danger. As we burn gas to produce electricity or get us around town in our cars and trucks, we create tons of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This is causing global warming.
Polar bears need sea ice to live because the ice is their hunting ground. The bears’ main source of food is the meat of seals(海豹). These animals come to surface holes in the ice to breath. It is there that the polar bears catch the seals. Without any ice, there is nowhere for bears to hunt. The seals hardly come onto the land and spend their time out on the sea ice.
In recent years, the seal ice has disappeared in the Arctic during the late summer. This is dangerous for the polar bears, as they depend almost only on seals for food. Unlike brown and black bears, polar bears do not hibernate(冬眠) during the winter. Only female polar bears will go into a “little house” and stay for a long time if they are giving birth to baby bears.
It may be strange to think about, but winter is the time for polar bears to get food while summer is the time of hunger. The bears have got used to a cold world, and they need the low temperatures in order to stay alive. If the world continues to warm up and sea ice is absent for longer and longer periods of time, polar bears might unluckily go the way of dinosaurs (恐龙).
【1】Because of human beings, all the bears in the world are facing great danger now.
【2】If there are no seals on the sea ice, polar bears may have no food to eat.
【3】Unlike brown and black bears, only female polar hibernate in winter.
【4】Polar bears can get much more food in summer than in winter.
【5】Global warming may make polar bears die out in the future.

27、 An article just published says some forms of screen time are more harmful to academic(学业的) achievement than others. The researchers found that viewing television and playing video games appeared to have a negative effect on academic achievement.
Based on an analysis of the data from 58 studies related to screen time and various measures of academic achievement, it should be noted that some individual studies do find a connection between total screen time and academics. Too much screen time produces several problems, including academics, sleep, socialization as well as physical and mental health.
The findings of the new study lend support to the need to look at not only how much time teens spend on the use of digital devices but what positive and negative effects various devices may have on academic achievement. The bottom line is that parents and educational professionals should consider supervision(监督) and reduction on screen time to improve the academic performance of teens, as the academic performance of teens appeared to be more adversely affected than that of children.
Children may be obsessed with activities like playing games, while teens can even stay up all night texting or chatting. So the most important rule should be no digital devices of any kind allowed in bedrooms. Also, there should be no screen time of any type at least one hour before bedtime. The blue light from these devices causes teens to have trouble falling asleep.
Alternatives(替代品) to digital use can be physical activities or reading. There is an increase in Vitamin D deficiency(不足) in teens from not getting at least an hour per day of exposure to the sun and they need to spend more time outside. Spending time reading each day is vital(important) for all family members. It’s great to read the same book and discuss different thoughts. Research is starting to show that we comprehend more from reading from books on paper than books on screen.
Besides limiting time and encouraging alternative activities, teens are encouraged to use media creatively. This might include making videos, recording their own music, or learning to code. Apps to teach office skills or researching are great. While monitoring and setting limits are the key, parents also need to suggest and encourage alternative uses of digital devices as well as alternative activities to replace the screen time.
