二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The way to a man's heart trough his stomach. This is what Chin offed me he moment my feet touched its ground. As someone who loves food, I couldn’t help worrying about eating food which is foreign to my tongue. I love my country’s food. Being far away from home for the first time, finding good food was my priority.

Clearly, the beginning of every journey can be rough. My experience at Chinese restaurants left a lot to be desired. I had yet to explore Nanjing and I would often eat at cafeterias around my university. My first date with Chinese food was not a happy experience. I thought it did not suit my taste.

However, one day my Chinese classmates took me to a Chinese restaurant near our university. It looked like a place for special occasions or family gatherings of some sort. My classmates then called the waiter to take our orders.

One dish after another arrived until the table was full. It was the first time I had witnessed such a meal, with more than 10 dishes on the table. Because of my past experience of Chinese food, I was quite hesitant(犹豫的) about trying all the dishes. I thought that I should only pick what I could eat. But one of my classmates sitting next to me convinced me to give each of the dishes a try. I tasted them one by one and my whole concept of Chinese food changed after that. Each dish appealed to my taste, and I forgot to slow down.

It cannot be denied that food is one main source of our happiness and it is indeed our thirst for survival. China won my heart when the food got through my stomach.

  • 27、Television's favorite red-headed female characters

There are many incredible female characters on television, but perhaps the most impressive are the redheads. Here is a list of some popular red-headed characters and the actresses who played them.

Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones

Sansa started out as an innocent child, but over the seasons, she grew to become a strongwoman and eventually the Queen in the North. As the character grew, so did the red hair, and by the last season, Sansa's hair reached all the way to her waist.

Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway on Mad Men

Joan mostly wore her short hair up, but when she was going to parties, she would letdown the red curls to frame her face. Joan exercised power as she rose in the ad company from head secretary through the ranks to one of the top people there, breaking the glass ceiling of the boys’ club.

Rose Leslie as Ygritte on Game of Thrones

As another actress on Game of Thrones, Leslie played the warrior Ygritte. With her beautiful red hair, she was loved by Jon Snow (Kit Harington). While Ygritte was killed in Season 4, Harington and Leslie's love story began and lived on as the couple married in 2018.

Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery on Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice

This red-headed doctor was so successful on Grey's Anatomy that the broadcasting company gave her a spin-off series called Private Practice, where the character finally achieved success in love and career. • 28、Last year, things didn’t go well to me. Like many people during the pandemic, my husband Paul, lost his job. I was working, but only part-time. I was worried about money, COVID and our future. That’s when our mailboxes really started getting to me.

I’d never liked our mailboxes much, which was already in rough shape and stood at the end of our long driveway with the paint faded and the metal pole rusted (生锈).

One day, someone had driven into the pole, which was now bent slightly. However, because the boxes could still hold the mails and the postman wasn’t complaining, there was no need to replace them. But every time I saw them lately, they reminded me of all the problems in my life.

“Lord, I wish we had better mailboxes,” I found myself thinking one day on my way to work. It was more of a passing thought than a prayer. I probably would have forgotten all about it if it were not for the news we got the next morning.

“Our neighbor just sent a message,” Paul said. “A girl drove her car right into the mailboxes, completely breaking them down.”

    “Is she okay?” I asked.

“She wasn’t hurt, but really upset. Shihiem saw it happen. He said she’s just a teenager. He gave her our number and information.”

“That certainly wasn’t in the budget,” I thought. As much as I wanted new mailboxes, getting them would be expensive.

I glanced out of the window. There was an unfamiliar car at the end of the driveway. It was too far away to see what the driver was doing. Surprisingly, about two hours later I found on the spot where rusted mailboxes had once stood was a solid, white post with new, shiny mailbox sitting on each arm—one black, one white. Paul handed me a note.

“Dear Neighbor, I am so, so sorry I hit y’all’s mailbox. I bought and replaced them with new pretty ones. Again, I am so sorry. Have a wonderful, blessed day!”

The writer had included her phone number and address in case we needed anything else.

We did—we needed to thank her! We also wanted to make sure she hadn’t been injured.

【1】Why didn’t the writer replace her mailboxes?

    A.She was busy working.

    B.The postman liked them.

    C.They could still be used.

D.They reminded her of the difficulties in life.

【2】Which of the following can best describe Audree?

    A.Clever and beautiful.

  • 29、The common use of Google Maps, a navigation (导航) app on smartphones, raises the age-old question we meet with any technology: What skills are we losing? But also, importantly: What abilities are we getting?

People who are good at finding their way around or good at using paper maps are usually confused about digital (数字的) maps. For example, they may mess up the direction of north and south. But consider what digital navigation apps have meant for someone like me. Although I travel often, I’m so terrible at finding my way that I still use Google Maps almost every day where I have lived for many years. What seems unnecessary to some has been an important part of my own abilities.

Part of the problem is that reading paper maps requires a special skill set. There is nothing natural about them. In many developed nations, street names and house numbers are meaningful, and instructions such as "go north for three blocks and then west" are usually understandable. In Istanbul, however, where I grew up, none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals hardly use street names, and house numbers often aren’t sequential. After buildings 1,2 and 3 were built, someone might put in another house between 1 and 2, and that’s 4. Therefore, instructions as simple as "go north" would require a helicopter. I got lost all the time.

But since I used Google Maps, I travel with a lot more confidence. As a result, my world has opened up and my native navigation skills have improved, too.

That brings me back to my question: while we often lose some skills after seeking convenience from technology, this new setup may also allow us to gain more abilities and do something more confidently. Maybe when technology closes a door, we should also look for the doors it opens.

【1】What do we know about Google Maps from the first two paragraphs?

A.It confuses users like the writer.

B.It helps people read maps better.

C.It is a technology welcomed by all.

D.It is popular but brings doubts as well.

【2】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “sequential” in Paragraph 3?

    A.In a usual order.

    B.Easily noticed.

    C.of the same kind.

    D.Clearly written.

【3】What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce the use of Google Maps.

B.To share his opinions on Google Maps.

C.To show the influence of Google Maps.

D.To tell the great popularity of Google Maps.
