二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、For anyone connected with a school, the last couple of weeks should have been a pile-up of plays, choir (合唱团) performances, and talent shows. But a report found, alarmingly, that 53% of primaries and 63% of secondaries that normally hold a festive concert at the end of the first term did not do so.

It is deeply troubling that music is no longer being taught to 11-to-14-year-olds in more than half of state secondaries. And some children get as little as one day of music lesson a year. If this situation is allowed to continue, music-making will become the preserve (保留地) of those who can afford it. And the intense competition for better academic performance has only sped up this trend. A survey published this month of more than 1, 300 music teachers found that a third of British primary schools are not singing, while a quarter have stopped instrumental lessons. Almost three-quarters of primary and two-thirds of secondary schools have cancelled extracurricular music. Though a sharp decline of music provision is due to various social factors, Ofsted appeared to put this down to schools themselves, rather than pointing the finger at the government’s silence to educators’ appeal.

This is very sad and shortsighted. On the most basic level, music aids academic achievement. Research suggests that music-making improves speech and literacy. But academic progress is too narrow a standard of success. In her book, Joan Koenig argues that music is fundamental to a well-functioning society. Besides that, music-making nurtures sympathy and belonging. “People stand a much better chance of finding meaning and happiness in their lives if they feel that they belong,” as Koenig puts it. “Studies show that group musical practice can create and increase this feeling. It is when people don’t have a sense of belonging that things go wrong.”

In this time of uncertainty and fear, ensuring that all children can access music-making is a cause deserving meaningful backup and help from the government.

【1】What docs Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.Music plays an important role in schools.

B.Music lessons are nearly absent from classrooms.

    C.Schools only value academic achievements.

D.Parents cannot afford students, music lessons.

【2】According to Ofsted, who is to blame for the affected music provision?

    A.The government.

    B.The educators.

    C.The schools.

    D.The researchers

【3】What does the underlined word “nurturest” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Worsens.

    B.Ruins.

    C.Symbolizes.

    D.Promotes

【4】What does the author mainly convey in the last paragraph?

A.Music education calls for support and attention.

    B.Music education is uncertain.

    C.Music-making is tough.

    D.Music-making makes sense.

    Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains

The book mainly presents us with the American Indian leaders of the past. It features many profiles and biographies including Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Little Crow and Lozen Quanah etc. written by author Charles Eastman, and I’m sure you will be interested in it.

    Name: Sitting Bull

    Birth: 1831

    Death: 12-15-1890

He was a great hero and is respected by many American Indians. In a 1997 documentary (纪录片) — The Great Tribes, he was known as a holy man, a composer of songs and an artist. Under him, the Sioux and Cheyenne Nations unified. He was advised to go on a European tour in 1887, but he turned it down to defend these two nations from being separated again. He led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies and was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

    Name: Crazy Horse

    Birth: 1842

    Death: 9-5-1877

Crazy Horse was a legendary warrior(勇士) and a gentle leader as well as a brave man who stood for the highest ideal of the Sioux, celebrated for his battle skills as well as his efforts to preserve Native American traditions and way of life. Resisting efforts to force the Sioux on to reservations, he fought alongside Sitting Bull and others in the American-Indian Wars. Charles Eastman described him in his book Indian Heroes as “a man of deeds and not of words”.

    Name: Red Cloud

    Birth: 1822

    Death: 12-10-1909

He was against the movement of the white settlers into the Black Hills. In 1868, he refused to sign a treaty (条约), which stated that the Black Hills didn’t belong to people. The treaty also stated that these areas couldn’t be entered without the government’s permission. According to Eastman’s book Indian Heroes, he was said to have fought against the treaty, forcing the government to give in and pull out of the area.

    Name: Lozen Quanah

    Birth: late 1840s

    Death: 1890

Known as the youngest sister of Red Cloud, she devoted herself to the people. She was described in Peter Aleshire’s Warrior Woman as a heroine good at riding horses and using a bow and arrow to drive attackers away. • 28、Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question.

    How to Be Prepared

Electricity, water, gas(煤气) and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You’ll need food, water and so on. It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.

If you’re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you’re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses.

    After an Earthquake

Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve(阀). If there’s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency (紧急情况).Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right ,generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location.

【1】What is advised to do before an earthquake?

A.Making a date with your family the way of reuniting.

B.Preparing enough food for more than a week.

C.Making sure of your telephones in hand.

D.Calling your distant relatives to help.

【2】What is the main idea of paragraph three?

    A.Never drive when in earthquake.

    B.Keep calm when in earthquake.

C.Never run away when in earthquake.

D.Do and don’t when in earthquake.

【3】Why is asked to close the main valves and control boxes?

    A.To reduce the resources.

    B.To avoid the possible fire.

    C.To better the environment.

D.To avoid the outbreak of earthquake.

【4】What will we do after an earthquake?

A.It’s a good idea to drive to a safe place.

B.Stay near a door to protect you.

C.Get hold of the latest information.

    D.Call everyone to help you.

  • 29、A heartbroken dog whose owner died two months ago is missing her so much that he attends services every day at the Italian church where her funeral was held, patiently waiting for her to return.

Tommy, a seven-year-old dog, belonged to Maria Lochi, 57, and had been her faithful partner after she adopted him when she found him in fields close to her home. Mrs. Lochi adopted several dogs she found but friends said she developed a close friendship with Tommy and would walk to church with him every day, where he would be allowed to sit patiently by her feet.

Father Panna said, “He’s there every time I celebrate Mass and is very well behaved. He doesn’t make a sound, and I’ve not heard one bark from him in all the time he has been in. He used to come with Maria and he was obviously devoted to her. I let him stay inside as he was always so well behaved and none of the other people ever complained to me. He’s still coming to Mass even after Maria’s funeral, he just sat there quietly. I didn’t have the heart to throw him out. I’ve just recently lost my own dog so I leave him there until Mass finishes and then I let him out.”

Tommy’s been adopted by everyone in the village now and he is everybody’s friend. Everyone looks out for him and leaves food for him, although it would be nice to find a proper home for him.

The story of Tommy is similar to the 2009 Hollywood film Hachi which told of how a faithful Akita dog waits patiently for his master after he also dies. It was based on the true story of a Japanese Akita called Hachi, whose owner died in 1925 but for the next nine years he waited patiently at the railway station for his owner from where they regularly caught a train.

【1】The dog Tommy still goes to the church every day to ________.

    A. attend his owner’s funeral

    B. wait for Lochi to come back

    C. stay together with Lochi

    D. celebrate Mass with Father Panna

【2】According to the passage, Maris Lochi ________.

    A. is an old woman who likes dogs

    B. is Father Panna’s wife

    C. is the owner of the Italian church

    D. is devoted to the Father Panna

【3】What does the writer want to tell us by quoting what Father Panna said?

    A. Why the dog can stay in the church every day.

    B. How the dog came to Mass with Maria.

    C. What Father Panna usually does in the church.

    D. Where Father Panna allows the dog to stay.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A. A dog fond of Mass    B. A faithful dog like Hachi

    C. A Hollywood film Hachi   D. Maria Lochi’s story
