26、【1】 His quotes are on cups. Lego has created a figure in his honor. There’s even a film series featuring a St. Bernard named after him. Even people who may claim not to know anything about classical music would still be able to recognize the “da, da, da dum!” opening figure from Beethoven’s Fifth.
However, it’s not only the quality of Beethoven’s music that makes him so special.
The composer changed the musical world forever. It has been said that he alone dragged music out of the Classical age and into the Romantic. But that doesn’t go far enough. 【2】
Before Beethoven, composers worked for the glory of God, or wrote on bended knee for wealthy courts. Beethoven kicked down the doors of the aristocratic (贵族的) world and made himself at home. 【3】
Beethoven knew beyond doubt that he was writing for eternity (不朽). His confidence in his abilities was the only great truth in his life and he held on to it. 【4】 With Beethoven, music became about feelings, about looking within and expressing things unsayable.
In 1805 he changed the course of musical history with his Eroica symphony composition. It was the first truly “heroic” piece of music ever created.
His sense of invention and resourcefulness never declined. His Fifth symphony was described by English novelist E.M. Forster as “the most beautiful noise that has ever penetrated into the car of man.” His music, especially that which was composed during his last ten years, is unique. 【5】
And he was deaf.
Study Shakespeare and he will show you what people are. Listen to Beethoven, who wrote simply to show his artistic and intellectual existence, and he will show you what you could be.
A.He wrote for himself alone.
B.He never abandoned hope.
C.His music is the very definition of “interiority (内在)”.
D.Out of all composers, Beethoven needs the least promotion.
E.Beethoven both defined and deserves his own musical time.
F.Nothing like it has ever been composed and nothing ever will.
G.Beethoven enjoyed a great reputation as a wonderful musician.
27、Using a toilet can pay for your coffee or buy your bananas at a university in South Korea, where human waste is being used to help power a building.
Cho Jae-weon, a professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), has designed an eco-friendly (环保) toilet—the BeeVi toilet, which is connected to a lab that uses human waste to produce biogals (沼气).
The BeeVi toilet sends human waste into an underground tank in a way that reduces water use. There, the waste is broken down into methane (甲烷) which becomes a source of power for the building.
“If we think out of the box, human waste has great value to make power ,” Cho said. He added that a person defecates (排便) about 500 g a day, which can be turned into 50 litres of methane gas. This gas can produce 0.5 point kWh of electricity or be used to drive a car for about 1.2km (0.75miles).
Cho has created a digital currency (货币) called Ggool. Each person using the eco-friendly toilet earns 10 Ggool a day. Students can use it to buy goods within the university, from coffee to fruits and books.
“I only thought that human waste is dirty, but now it has become a treasure of great value to me, ” student Heo HuI-jin said. “ I even talk about it during mealtimes, thinking about buying a new book I want.”

28、Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states (州) have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At a-bout 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful (健忘). People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s problem.

29、I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question — what is a good person?
At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students, a young man of about 30, described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his five-year-old son were decorating the Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.
So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him, “Give him one of your toys.” At the words, the little boy quickly picked up one toy, and his father said to him, “No, no, give him your favorite toy.”
And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!” He cried; he refused. But the father, like a big tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.”
And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited in the living room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited and waited.
What do you think happened?
After a couple of minutes, his son came running back into the living room, his face lighted up. “Daddy,” he said, “can I do that again?” I think I have got the answer to the question.

When I was laid off (失业)in 2015, I told people about it the way any young people would: by tweeting it. My hope was that someone in my social network would point me to potential opportunities.
