  • 26、As often as possible, high school students should face challenges. 【1】 Giving a speech in class forces students out of their comfort zone (区), especially if they must take a stand on a social issue. The following tips for giving a speech in class can benefit high school students.

【2】 Before practicing public speaking skills, high school students should consider the audience. Students should ask a few questions: Am I speaking to teenagers, adults, or both? How big is the audience? What is the context of my speech?

Stick to the topic. Young speakers will not have time to cover every part of the topic. 【3】 They can write a clear thesis statement(主旨句) that serves as a road map for the whole speech. Then, the speakers should identify two or three central points they can explain.

Ask for feedback (反馈). High school students should rehearse (排练) the speech before an audience of one or two people. 【4】 In this way, they get a feel for the size of the room. The listeners should sit at the back of the room to know whether they can hear the speaker clearly. 【5】 Eye contact holds the audience responsible for listening and gives a speaker the chance to check if the audience is tracking the central points properly.

    A.Honor time limits.

    B.Know the audience.

C.Instead, students should narrow their focus.

D.Listeners can remind the speakers to make eye contact.

E.And public speaking is an excellent way to do just that.

F.If possible, students should practice in the room where they will be speaking.

G.Students should take advantage of opportunities to learn how to communicate.

  • 28、Jack was born without eyes. He was very lucky as he grew up having other kittens (young cats) to socialize (交往) with, and was used to people from the moment he was born. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up.

That’s when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There’s one here with no eyes and no one would like to take him”. Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten.

When we first brought him home, Jack stayed mostly in my room. After about a day he had no issues running around and climbing on everything. At times he gets lost in the house, he’ll stop. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn’t long before he finds his way back to us.

A few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new cat named Bear. Jack and Bear have become best friends. It doesn’t matter that he can’t see. He always knows when Bear is around. He’ll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. They run after each other around and wrestle (摔跤). They’ll lie down in the grass together when tired.

Jack is truly an inspiration. I’ve owned lots of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest and most playful. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He doesn’t need pity. I think Jean, owner of Gumbo, another eyeless cat, said it best when she told me that cats don’t have disabilities; they have adaptability.

【1】Why did Jack come to the author’s home?

A.The author cared for an eyeless cat.

B.The author didn’t mind whether he was blind.

C.No other young cats kept him company.

D.The author’s friend begged the author to take him home.

【2】What does the underlined word “issue” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Trouble.

    B.Fun.

    C.Luck.

    D.Business.

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Jack often wrestles with Bear indoors.

B.Jack likes to play with a new eyeless cat.

C.Jack quickly adapts to the new environment.

D.Jack is good at talking and playing with people.

【4】What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A.A cat has nine lives.

B.All is well that ends well.

C.God helps those who help themselves.

D.A good beginning makes a good ending.

  • 29、As Valentine ’s Day is coming, many of us start thinking of creative and thoughtful ways to express our love to our family and friends. 【1】Here are several ways to show love to strangers.

Practice compassion (同情). As humans, we often forget about the feelings of others. The people counting out all their coins to pay at the grocery store (杂货店), may be using every last penny they have to feed their family.【2】Maybe you can offer help by paying for groceries or helping them put their groceries in the car. An ounce of compassion goes a long way to show others that you care.

【3】Hold the door for others, offer to help a neighbor lift a heavy box, or pick up something someone has dropped and return it. Say “Thank you”, offer to help someone standing on the side of the highway with a broken-down car, or ask people you meet how their day is going.

Make someone smile. A sweet smile is the best way to show your kindness and start a conversation. Go out of your way to make someone smile daily. Give praise to people you come across, pay for a stranger’s meal or even tell a small joke to make a person laugh.【4】

Offer encouragement. 【5】They may need some words of encouragement. Reach out to these people. Talk to them and give them the motivation (动力) they need to keep moving forward with their lives.

    A.Give meaningful gifts.

B.Be polite to others through kindness.

C.Pick up rubbish on the street or at the park.

D.In situations like this, put yourself in other people ’s shoes.

E.We all meet people in public who may be down on their luck.

F.All of these may be just what they need to get through a difficult day.

G.But the holiday also gives us an opportunity to show love to others we don’t know.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sometimes I just felt like there were two of me. On the night of our school science fair, Mum and Dad both came because I was getting an award (奖励). They didn’t sit together but they each told me how proud they were of me. It was the first time in a long time that I’d seen them in the same room.

When I went back to Mum’s the next day, I was feeling sad and wasn’t paying attention as I rode my bike down the street. My bike hit a rock, and I fell down hard into the street, twisting (扭伤) my leg.

Mum rushed me to the emergency room calling Dad on the way. Someone put me on a bed and took an X-ray of my leg. My leg really hurt, but I almost forgot about it when I saw Mum and Dad both standing next to me. When the doctor said my leg wasn’t broken and I could go home, I went back to being the same old rubber band (橡皮筋).

At least at school nothing had changed, and I could be just me. My best friend, Trish, was in my class and we told each other everything, our deepest, darkest secrets. But one day Trish decided to pick Lisa instead of me to be on her softball team. I was so mad! So I hid her lunchbox. No one could find it. Later that day the teacher asked the kids again if anyone knew what had happened to the lunchbox. When she got to me, I couldn’t lie. I was sent to the principal’s (校长) office, and the principal called my parents. We had a meeting. Mum gave me her disappointed look that said, “How could you embarrass (使难堪) me like this?”

Tears filled my eyes. “I know. I feel terrible. ” Then the words kept coming out of my mouth like rocks rolling down a hill. “I hate that you get divorced (离婚)! You don’t even talk to each other unless I’m having a problem. My whole life has changed. I have two different homes, and two different sets of rules. And Tm always afraid that if you get mad at me, you’ll divorce me, too. ‘‘I froze. Did I just say all those things out loud?
