二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、These days, a new start-up called Winston Club has been offering travelers the opportunity to book hotel rooms at just 50 percent of their usual cost. Obviously, there’s a catch — they have to be sharing the room with complete strangers.

Byron Shannon, the founder of the club, thought that there should be an easy way for people to connect when they’d like a low-cost way to access the comfort and convenience of a hotel, so the club was set up to provide a safe, reliable, economical solution that provided a better experience than CouchSurfing alternatives.

Byron said that he came up with the idea after he listed his own property on Airbnb when he was out of town for two days. He set out to look for a cheap option, but in vain. He didn’t want to dish out $150 or $200 on a hotel room. Frustrated, he wondered why there wasn’t a way for him to share the cost of a room with someone else at one of the nice hotels nearby. “My guest needed to stay there for three nights, and I was only going to be out of town for two,” he said. “I assumed it couldn’t be too difficult to find another hotel downtown for me to spend one night at.”

Later, Byron met with a friend who worked at a hotel, talked about his vision, and came up with the idea of getting random strangers together to share the cost of expensive hotel rooms. He eventually worked out the details, and launched the service along America’s West Coast — like Seattle, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland.

Safety is naturally a top concern, but Byron assures everyone that his screening procedure is quite strict. All the members must produce five forms of verification(证实)— phone number and professional email at account setup, one verified social media account and credit card at booking, and one photo ID at check-in. Members must pre-approve pairings before the reservation is complete.

Rather than staying with a stranger, people are sharing a space with someone who has been screened and is responsible for their actions. However, the concept is not for everybody. Winston appeals to the growing segment(部分) of consumers who are comfortable and familiar with the sharing economy and operate on a self-funded travel budget.

The company is currently accepting membership applications online. Several people have apparently signed up, mostly between the ages of 20 and 35.

1】【1What does the author mean by “there’s a catch”?

    A. The chances are limited.   B. It raises much concern.

    C. You have got a privilege.   D. It has a disadvantage.

2】【2Winston Club was started with the purpose of ________.

    A. persuading travelers to live in nice hotels

    B. helping travelers book hotels worldwide easily

    C. giving travelers access to safe and cheap hotel service

    D. offering travelers more chances to connect with strangers

3】【3Before people stay with a stranger, they should ________.

    A. pay for the reservation

    B. pass through a strict screening procedure

    C. meet with each other ahead of time

    D. share more responsibilities than rights

  • 22、   At the age of 83, I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without caring about the weeds in the garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time working.

Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to suffer. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

I’m not “saving” anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, or the first Amaryllis blossom. I wear my good clothes to the market. I’m not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.

“Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their positions in my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and do it now.

I’m not sure what  others would have done had they known they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past quarrels. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was.

It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift.

1Why is the author not “saving” anything?

A.She has already saved enough. B.She wants to seize the day.

C.She finds the chance to spend. D.She attends many special occasions.

2The author would feel angry if ________.

A.there were few things she could do B.she could not live long

C.her efforts were in vain D.her last days were full of regret

3What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To share what she has learned from her life.

B.To blame people who left many things undone.

C.To show her regret for what she missed in life.

D.To persuade people to think more of themselves.

  • 23、   People have been told to stay separated — at least six feet apart— and to practice what state and local officials call “social distancing”. Some have been asked to work at home. But as people try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus 新型冠状病毒), the resulting chaos and fear are bringing both large and small communities closer.

Simple acts of kindness are sprouting up online and in public, as neighbors, students, teachers, and others begin to connect those who can pass this long and isolating time smoothly, and the people who may not have the means to get through.

For Jesse Farren-James, helping out has taken the form of organizing trips to the

supermarkets for supplies, and use of her membership card if anyone needs to buy large quantities. She posted the offer in a Facebook group for the community residents, and some people came and turned to her. “I just feel so lucky that I have so many people in my life to rely on and so sad that not everyone has that,” she wrote in the group. In another interview, Farren-James said the “community is coming together" and “there are so many good and amazing people” offering to help where they can.

Also, parents in Dorchester have gathered together online. In a Facebook group called DotParents, parents have been raising money to buy food and supplies for students and families in the community. Lisa Graustein has been organizing this activity. On Thursday, she used the more than $2,000 raised by neighbors to purchase food in a restaurant supply company. A group of volunteers packed the food and planned to distribute to schools for those who may need it.

“Food shortage is real in our city and this crisis is going to be severe.” Graustein said. “But here's something we can do that deal better with the hard time”. This idea is spreading. She said friends in four other states had being running similar campaigns. Next, she wants to find a way to get landlords to temporarily abandon rent for residents in financial difficulties because of the outbreak.

1The underlined phrase in paragraph 2 “sprouting up” can be best replaced by  .

    A.Disappearing B.Growing

    C.Connecting D.Helping

2What do we know about Jesse Farren-James?

A.She is a shopping assistant working for a supermarket.

B.She is wealthy and always ready to help others.

C.She lent her membership card to the people in need.

D.She felt sad that not everyone has enough food.

3What did parents in Dorchester do to offer help?

A.They bought food from the supermarket for community children.

B.They set up a restaurant supply company to provide food.

C.They raised money to deal with food shortage.

D.They distributed money to community residents.

4Which is the best title for this passage?

A.Acts of kindness in coronavirus outbreak

B.Effects of social media in coronavirus outbreak

C.Social distancing in the online community

D.Helping each other in financial difficulties

  • 24、Even though they're not the most exciting things in the world, plants have attracted us ever since the days of early humans. They may not do any tricks or greet us when we come home at night like a dog would, but that doesn't mean they're any less interesting than animals.

However, just when we thought we knew everything we could about them, a recent study found that plants may have a secret ability that has gone unnoticed all this time.

According to the study by Australian biologist Monica Gagliano, published in the journal Oecologia, plants may be able to "hear” sounds . To come to this conclusion, Gagliano and her team planted pea seedlings (幼苗)in a pair of different Y-shaped pots with two arms. The first pot's arms led to fresh water, while the other's led to either dry soil or a sealed (密封的)plastic tube containing flowing water. Naturally, the first pot's seedlings grew toward the water. What's surprising, however, is that the second pot's seedlings grew toward the sealed water supply but not the soil.

"They just knew the water was there even if the only thing to discover was the sound of it flowing inside the pipe, ” Gagliano told Scientific American . She believes that plants are able to use their leaves to discover sound waves, which make tiny vibrations (振动)as they're produced. This could explain why so many people believe that singing or playing music to their plants helps them grow. “ I had a plant that I used to wash the leaves of once a week and sing to," plant lover Heather Goodall told BBC News. "It grew from being about 2 feet tall to 7 feet tall in just a couple of years."

So, does this mean we should start treating our plants like pets? Not necessarily, although perhaps it does mean we should give them more respect. "I would like to see plants accepted more as the amazing and interesting living beings, and less as just a source of human nutrition," Fatima Cvrckova, a scientist at Charles University in the Czech Republic, told BBC News.

【1】What did Gagliano find in their study?

A.Plants can recognize the sound of water.

B.Sound can change the direction plants grow toward.

C.Plants can tell the difference between various sounds.

D.Different plants can discover sounds in different ways.

【2】What do plants use to hear sound according to Gagliano?

    A.Their roots

    B.Their flowers

    C.Their fruits

    D.Their leaves

【3】Why does the author mention Heather Goodall's example?

A.To show a different way of growing plants.

B.To inspire people to sing to their plants often.

C.To prove that music plays a role in plant growth.

D.To stress the importance of treating plants like pets.

【4】What would Cvrckova probably agree with?

A.Plants are just a source of human nutrition.

B.There is still a lot we do not know about plants.

C.Plants are unbelievable and deserve more respect.

D.Most people do not care enough about their plants.
