二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The expression“a thirst for knowledge" may soon have a new meaning for millions of people who have no way to get clean water. Researchers have developed a book with specially treated pages that can turn dirty water into clean and drinkable water. They say their invention could improve the lives of many in the developing world.

About 700 million people around the world are at risk of disease or even death because their drinking water is not clean. The water is polluted by harmful bacteria.

The book contains 25 pages. Each page is about one millimeter thick. The pages contain very small particles (微粒) of silver. The pages can be used as filters(过滤器)to remove harmful microorganisms(微生物) that can pollute drinking water. The filter kills the organisms that pass through it.

Pictures on the pages show the dangers of dirty water and how to use the book for those unable to read. The pages are made of filter paper. They are designed to be torn from the book. Water can be poured through the paper to be cleaned.

Ms. Dankovich, the inventor, says each page can treat up to 100 liters of water. She recently presented her invention at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. She was asked whether she had considered adding classic literature on the book's pages.

"The idea of classic texts—that's of interest maybe later. We have discussed a little bit more exciting text. But we really haven't had the time to go through that part," she says.

Teri Dankovich and another researcher tested the drinkable book in Bangladesh, Ghana and South Africa. The tests proved to be successful.

Water for Life, a non-governmental organization, has provided financial support for the project.

【1】What do we learn about the book from the text?

A.It has pages with several functions.

    B.It is about environment protection.

C.It sells well around the world.

D.It can treat about 100 liters of water.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "that part" in Paragraph 6 refer to?

    A.Classic texts.

    B.Exciting discussion.

    C.Invention presentation.

    D.Financial support.

【3】In which country did not the researchers test the drinkable book?

    A.Ghana

    B.Bangladesh.

    C.South Africa.

    D.America.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Researchers have found a way to save those being ill.

B.Book pages could provide safe drinking water.

C.Knowledge is as important as drinkable water.

D.Millions of people are in great need of drinkable water.

  • 22、Picture this: you’ve just settled into your workday and pulled up that big report you need to finish, when a friend sends you a couple of celebrity videos on WeChat. 【1】 And then the next thing you know, an hour has gone by while that big report sits, ignored, on your desk. So how does that happen?

To understand this, we conducted a series of studies with 6,445 people. Through this research, we identified three factors: the amount of media the person has already viewed, the similarity of the media they’ve viewed, and the manner in which they viewed the media.

We found the order and types of content we consume can affect our decision to keep consuming similar content. But what drives this effect? 【2】 When something feels more accessible, it becomes easier to process, leading us to enjoy it more.

These results also explain why it’s so easy to get distracted by apps on social media at work. 【3】 They offer bite-sized content that makes it easy to quickly consume several videos in a row. They often automatically suggest similar content, and many of them even automatically start playing similar videos, reducing the potential for interruptions.

【4】 To fight the pull, make an effort to just watch one video. If you really want to watch multiple in a row, choose videos that seem unrelated. You can also use a social media timer that urges you to take a break after a certain amount of time, or even just consciously remind yourself to consume different kinds of content.

So, if you’re struggling to climb out of a rabbit hole, try to find ways to reduce the similarity, repetitiveness, and relatedness of the content you’re consuming. 【5】 Once you manage to break free, you’ll be back at that big report in no time.

A.It can be difficult, but it’s not impossible.

B.You figure you’ll just take a few minutes to watch them.

C.Accessibility refers to how familiar a given kind of content feels.

D.These platforms are designed to trap viewers in a social media rabbit hole.

E.Prior research suggests that the three factors all increase the accessibility of similar media.

F.The good news is, a better understanding of the problem can give us the tools to escape it.

G.This will become a problem if it keeps you from doing the things you actually want to be doing.

  • 23、For decades, climate scientists have named hurricanes and ranked them according to severity. “Naming and categorizing heat waves is also a must,” states a newly formed international union, called the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance. “Hurricanes get attention because they cause obvious physical damage,” says Jennifer Marlon, a climate scientist at Yale University. Heat waves, however, have less evident effects, since the primary damage is to human health.

Heat waves kill more people in the United States than any other weather-related disaster. Data from the National Weather Service show that from 1986 to 2019, there were 4,257 deaths as a result of heat. By comparison, there were fewer deaths by floods(2,907), tornadoes(2,203) or hurricanes(1,405) over the same period. What’s more, climate change is increasing the possibility of high temperature events worldwide, getting tens of thousands of people dying each year because of heat.

Some populations are particularly easily harmed by high heat, including people over 65 and those with potential medical conditions. Historical racial discrimination also places minority communities at higher risk. Due to housing policies, communities of color are more likely to live in urban areas, heat islands which lack the green spaces that help cool down neighborhoods.

Part of the naming and ranking process will include defining exactly what a heat wave is. No single definition currently exists. Without a universally accepted definition of a heat wave, “We don't have a common understanding of the danger we face,” says Aaron Bernstein, an expert of the new group. “Defined categories for heat waves could help local officials better prepare to address potential health problems in the face of rising temperatures. And naming and categorizing heat waves could increase public awareness of the health risks caused by these silent killers.”

The union is in ongoing conversations with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Meteorological Organization and other institutions to develop a standard naming and ranking practice.

【1】What do we know about the heat wave in America?

A.It causes most serious physical damage.

B.It has got more attention in recent years.

C.It kills more people than other natural disasters.

D.It is the biggest killer among weather-related disasters.

【2】Why are minority populations easily harmed by heat waves?

    A.They live in poorly-built houses.

    B.They lack good medical resources.

C.They have less access to green spaces.

D.They are restricted in their movements.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph 4?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Conservative.

    D.Tolerant.

【4】What does the text intend to tell us about heat waves?

A.They also kill lives like hurricanes.

B.They should have names like hurricanes.

C.Climate change is affecting them greatly.

D.Measures should be taken to prevent them.

  • 24、Like many constructions, it started small. But now thousands of children with autism (自闭症) are making friends and learning social skills by playing a special version of online building game Minecraft.

Stuart Duncan got the idea through a popular blog he ran about his own experiences with autism as well as bringing up a son with autism. Other parents with autistic children started telling him that their kids were crazy about a game that let them explore a randomly generated wilderness. However, despite loving the game, many of the children were being bullied (霸凌) by other players.

So, in 2013, Duncan, a web developer in Canada, set up a server to run a version of Minecraft only for children with autism and their families. He thought the invite-only server would attract 10 or 20 people, but hundreds requested to join in the first few days. Now, almost three years later, running the special version, Autcraft, is his full-time job. The community has nearly 7000 members, along with a team of engineers to help manage its many activities. “Parents see such a benefit for themselves and their children,” says Duncan.

In Minecraft, you use blocks of materials like wood and stone to build whatever you like. “This is a great way for them to play a game they love, but also have a social experience,” says Kate Ringland from the University of California, who has spent 60 hours inside this virtual world, watching how the kids play and chat to one another. “It’s giving an alternative way for these kids to express themselves and communicate without the stresses of the physical life stuff.”

Everyday social situations can be challenging for autistic children, who may struggle to pick up on social signals or understand another person’s viewpoint. Duncan thinks Minecraft removes the pressures typical of the real world. There is no noisy or unfamiliar environment to distract (使分心) you, no pressure to track the other person’s facial expressions or worry about eye contact. Joining a community like Autcraft could be a good first step to feeling less socially anxious and more engaged.

【1】What inspired Duncan to run Autcraft?

    A.Online Bullying.

    B.His son’s request.

    C.Some parents’ advice.

    D.His blog about autism.

【2】What can we learn about Autcraft from Paragraph 3?

    A.It has about 7,000 engineers.

    B.It was an unexpected success.

C.It helped parents play with their kids.

D.It remains accessible to all the people.

【3】How does Minecraft help children according to Duncan?

    A.By teaching communication skills.

B.By solving their real world problems.

    C.By explaining other people’s viewpoints.

    D.By offering stress-free social experiences.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.How Can We Deal With Autism?

    B.What Makes Minecraft So Famous?

C.Why Do Online Games Benefit Children?

D.How Does Autcraft Help Autistic Children?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.

No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.

I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.

I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home. I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew... until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way

I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away —as if punishing myself could undo things.

“I would tell everything to Grandpa,” a voice inside me said.

“I was wrong.” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.
