  • 22、Eleven-year-old Allan Baltz of Jonesboro, Arkansas, is familiar with the foster (领养) care system. When he and his twin sister Alice were only four, they came to live with their foster parents Derek and Lesli Baltz.

Last fall when Allan got an opportunity to pay it forward, he made it count.

During the height of the 2021 shutdown, to keep their kids entertained at home, the family decided to switch up their hairstyles. Lesli dyed her hair red and Alice went blue. Derek tried out a mustache, and Allan went the craziest by growing out a long, beautiful mullet (胭脂鱼发型).

When friends pushed Allan to enter the USA Mullet Championships competition, Allan initially wasn’t interested because he thought he couldn’t win. However, once he learned there was a cash prize, he changed his tune.

“He instantly was like ‘Oh, OK. I can do it, and we’ll give the money to kids in foster care.” Lesli said. “He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t say, ‘I can get a bike, then give some money away.’ It was just instant that he wanted to give it away.”

After submitting his photo and following up with several weeks of campaigning, Allan took home the top prize in the kid’s division with more than 25, 000 votes in his favor.

He split his winnings between two local foster care organizations, Together We Foster and Project Zero, but his impact went far beyond just the $2,500 he donated. His giving heart inspired others to do the same, and he ended up raising an additional $4,500 for the two organizations.

“People also started volunteering … and donating,” Lesli said. “A few people that we know decided to start fostering because of Allan’s story. The way that people hear it and it inspires them to do something about the foster care crisis is really incredible.” Lesli said she couldn’t be prouder of Allan’s heart for helping others and feels truly lucky to be his mom.

  • 23、For many of us, going to college is a right of passage that eventually takes us into the adult world of responsibility, knowledge, money and opportunity. 【1】 But as a whole, studies clearly show the more educated we are, the more productive we are in society and life. Below are the top four reasons to go to college.

Become more knowledgeable in several areas. Almost every degree in college will require that you study some major subjects, such as English, math and communication skills. These skills are likely to help you in your future career. 【2】 For example, the ability to speak in front of a group of people may be something you use in volunteer work for organizations or in groups of friends.

【3】 College is often a mix of many different people from many different walks of life. Since you will likely work with many different personalities and ethnicities when you begin your career, college can help prepare you for this.

Gain independence. 【4】 This can make the transition from home to living on your own much less stressful and more gradual. Participating in various youth activities can help students begin to learn the skills needed to live on their own.

Broaden your horizons. If you want to study subjects like philosophy and sociology—topics that are interesting but don't lead clearly to one particular occupation—college can be a good place. 【5】 Beyond the classroom, college presents an opportunity to intellectually develop, meet new people and see new places.

    A.Build self-esteem.

    B.Learn about diverse people.

C.Some areas will help you in all parts of life.

D.The friends you make in college are the friends that you keep for life.

E.College allows students to begin to live independently from Mom and Dad.

F.There are also many who manage to do just fine without a college education.

G.Actually, there you will realize critical thinking and problem solving are more important than your major.

  • 24、The Alexander technique

Until earlier this year, I didn’t know anything about the Alexander technique—and saw no reason to think I should. One day, the backache I regularly suffered was more painful. I was brought up to think that the preferred way of dealing with aches is to do nothing and hope they’ll go away, but I eventually went to the doctor. After examining me, he said, “You actually have bad posture (姿势). Go off and learn the Alexander technique.” Three months later I could walk straighter and sit better.

The Alexander technique is a way of learning how you can get rid of harmful tension in your body. The teaching focuses on the neck, head and back. It trains you to use your body less severely and carry out the movements that we do all the time with less effort. There is little effort in the lessons themselves, which sets apart the Alexander technique from yoga or pilates, which are exercise-based. A typical lesson involves standing in front of a chair and learning to sit and stand with minimum effort. You spend some time lying on a bench with your knees bent to straighten the spine (脊椎) and relax your body while the teacher moves your arms and legs to train you to move them correctly.

The technique helps to break the bad habits accumulated over years. Try folding your arms the opposite way to normal. This is an example of a habit the body has formed which can be hard to break. Many of us carry our heads too far back. The head weighs four to six kilos, so any inappropriate posture can cause problems for the body. The technique teaches you to let go of the muscles holding the head back, allowing it to go back to its natural place on the top of our spines.

So who was Alexander and how did he come up with the technique? Frederick Alexander, an Australian actor born in 1869, found in his youth that he had vocal (声音的) problems during performances. He analyzed himself and realized his posture was bad. He worked on improving it, with excellent results. He brought his technique to London and opened a teacher-training school, which is still successful today.

So if you’re walking along the road one day with shoulders bent forward, feeling weighed down by your troubles, give a thought to the Alexander technique. It will help you walk tall again.

1What does the author suggest in Paragraph 1?

    A. She felt no better after the treatment.

    B. She got bored with the Alexander technique.

    C. She was sceptical about the doctor’s method.

    D. She was unwilling to seek treatment for her backache.

2What is the principle of the Alexander technique?

    A. Physical tension shouldn’t be completely relieved.

    B. The technique shouldn’t be combined with other exercises.

    C. The practice of the technique shouldn’t be attempted alone.

    D. Familiar physical actions shouldn’t be done with much effort.

3What can we learn about Frederick Alexander?

    A. He managed to recover his vocal powers.

    B. He was eager to make a name for himself.

    C. He developed a form of exercise for actors.

    D. He had to leave home to develop his technique.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The occurrence of back pain is widespread.

    B. Alexander improved the technique to treat body pain.

    C. The Alexander technique helps overcome posture problems.

    D. People with back pain are victims of inappropriate postures.

  • 25、Two new studies add further pieces to the jigsaw puzzle that is human evolution. One reports a (n)_________extra member of the genus Homo. The other casts _________ on possible interbreeding between three human species in the Middle East.

Homo longi--- “Dragon man” into English from Chinese, via Latin---is not a (n)_________find, but a reinterpretation of an existing one. The cranium (头盖) in question was dug up in Harbin in1933 and is_________at Hebei GEO University, in Shijiazhuang. It is146,000 years old and was_________ badged as an archaic form of Homo sapiens (智人). But Ni Xijun and Ji Qiang, who work at the university, disagree. As they report in the Innovation, the cranium would indeed have contained a brain similar in size to a modern human’s, but the fossil is too large to be sapiens and has molars and eye sockets which dwarf those of people today. Dr Ni and Dr Ji also realised that it is too long and low to be sapiens. It lacks the_________of a modern human cranium.

This is good news for_________ of the recent- African- origin theory, which holds that most non-African human beings alive today are descendants of a small number of migrants who_________to Asia from the Horn of Africa about60, 000 years ago, meaning that any non- African human fossil from before that date is probably of another species descended from earlier, non- sapiens departures from Africa. The question was, which earlier species did the Harbin fossil represent? By_________it with known archaic humans, including Homo erectus, Homo floresiensis, Homo heidelbergensis and Homo neanderthalensis, Dr Ni and Dr Ji__________ that it was none of them, and must therefore be new to science and so worthy of its own name. There is, however, one other possibility-for there is a now-extinct type of human of which no cranium has yet been __________ . Homo denisova’s existence was established by the extraction of DNA from a finger bone, and traces of that DNA, a remnant of interspecies breeding, still exist in modern humans, notably in China. Since one of the Harbin fossil’s molars perfectly matches the size and root __________ of a molar from the Denisova cave in Russia, after which Homo denisova is named, it may be that Dr Ni and Dr Ji have actually identified the first Denisovan cranium.

The other study, published in Science by Israel Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University, also speaks to the question of interspecific interbreeding. Even supporters of the recent-African-origin theory recognise that there was, __________, an earlier “ leakage” of Homo sapiens from north-east Africa into the Levant. Dr Hershkovitz and his colleagues have been examining fossils of __________ antiquity—120,000-l40,000 years-- collected from Nesher Ramla, a site in Israel. These, they found, have sapiens-like jaw bones, Neanderthal-like molars and crania similar to those of Homo erectus. This suggests to them that they are the __________ of miscegenation between all three.
