二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A long layover(滞留)can be absolutely annoying. What are you supposed to do if you've got six, eight, or 12 hours to kill before your next flight? Most of the time, your options are to eat an overpriced meal, or to browse an overpriced bookstore. Well, you might have more choices than you think. These are the airports with the world's coolest activities you'd never expect.

    Munich Airport (MUC), Munich: Brewery(酿酒厂)tours

Where else but in Germany would you find not only a lively beer garden at an airport but also the actual brewery that supplies it? Airbräu is home to an award-winning lineup of cold ones and even offers brewery tours if you've got the time.

Los Angeles International (LAX), Los Angeles: Canine Friends

You're already anxious enough at the airport, and a long layover is bound to make it worse. Sounds like you need to take advantage of the therapy dogs at the Pets Unstressing Passengers program (PUP for short).

Incheon International (ICN), Seoul: Ice-Skating Rink

There's tons of stuff to do at Incheon International, including catching a movie or checking out a cultural museum. But what really sets it apart is the free ice-skating rink and ice forest, which opens seasonally. Don't worry: inline skating(直排轮滑) is available year-round.

Hong Kong International (HKG), Hong Kong: Golf Simulator(模拟器)

Hong Kong Airport used to be home to a real nine-hole golf course, but it was closed in 2015 due to an expansion of the airport hotel. Still, while you're waiting for your flight, you can borrow some clubs and hit the Golfzon simulator located in Terminal 2. It's probably better for air traffic control this way.

1If your flight from Munich to Hongkong is delayed, you may choose to________

    A.walk a therapy dog

    B.hit the Golfzon simulator

    C.visit a beer garden

    D.enjoy the beer festival

2What makes Incheon International better than others?

    A.Visiting a cultural museum .

    B.Going skating as you like.

    C.Watching an interesting movie.

D.Wandering in the ice forest year-round.

3What’s the purpose of the passage?

    A.To show must-see tourist attractions.

B.To inform tourists of the airport facilities.

    C.To introduce interesting layover activities.

D.To tell passengers unique airports worldwide.

  • 27、   Researchers have discovered a new bacterium that feeds on polyurethane, a kind of plastic that is difficult to recycle or destroy. Scientists say the discovery could help reduce a flood of hard — to — recycle plastics that are ending up in the world's landfills(垃圾填埋地) and polluting oceans.

A team from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, found the new type of soil bacteria. It was spotted in an area that contained a large amount of plastic waste. The team discovered the bacteria were feeding on polyurethane diol, which was widely used in many different products.

One problem is that recycling polyurethane requires a lot of energy. The plastic material does not melt when heated. Most polyurethane-based products end up in landfills, where they can release dangerous chemicals. The team round that the bacterium can produce enzymes(酶)that eat away polyurethane. This would make it possible to break down the material in the environment. The results were recently reported in a study in the publication Frontiers in Microbiology. Hermann Heipieper helped write the report. He said in a statement the finding “represents an important step in being able to reuse polyurethane products.”

German study noted that plastic-eating bacteria could be easily controlled and produced for industrial use. The researchers said the next step is to find more information about the bacterial enzymes that can break down polyurethane.

Scientist Douglas Rader wrote about the issue in a 2018 article for the Environmental Defense Fund. He said much more study should be carried out to learn about the complex relationships between bacteria and marine ecosystems. “Such research is needed before we can take action such as putting plastic-eating bacteria into the ocean,” Rader wrote.

1What is the problem about polyurethane?

A.It seems difficult to transport when it goes to landfills.

B.It affects the quality of plastic products if widely used.

C.It melts easily when exposed to the sun for a long time.

D.It pollutes the environment unless recycled or destroyed.

2What do we know about the new type of bacteria from the text?

A.It can produce harmful chemicals. B.It can gradually destroy polyurethane.

C.It is very hard to discover and control. D.It is very likely to increase plastic waste.

3What is Douglas Rader's attitude towards the future use of the new bacterium?

    A.Doubtful. B.Disapproval.

    C.Cautious. D.Enthusiastic.

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Plastic-eating Bacteria B.Plastic Waste — A Big Problem

    C.Plastic and Ocean D.Polyurethane — A Bacteria killer

  • 28、   As the days get shorter and the cold weather rolls in, we all want to curl up in a blanket and sleep until spring rolls around. But making time to get outside in the sun, even when it's cold out, could have bigger mood benefits than you might realize. New research finds that sunlight exposure is by far the greatest weather-related factor determining mental heath. In other words, more sunshine, more happiness.

For the study, a psychologist, a physicist and a statistician from BYU teamed up to compare daily environmental data from the university's Physics and Astronomy Weather Station with emotional health data archived by day for 16,452 adult patients who were being treated at the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services. Other weather variables(可变因素) including temperature, pollution and rain were not found to have an impact on mental health.

“We were surprised that many of the weather and pollution variables we included in the study were not significantly related to patients' scores once we had accounted for sun time," said Dr. Mark Beecher, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author.

Exposure to sunlight is a significant factor in seasonal affective disorder. Research has shown that the brain produces more of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin on sunny days than it does on darker days. What's more, lack of sunlight is linked with lower vitamin D levels, which in turn has been correlated with depression and low energy.

In addition to seeking professional help if you need it, taking a walk in the sun can help. Walking in nature is known to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, lighten the mood and even put the brain into a peaceful state.

1According to the new research, what can make people happier?

    A. Less pollution. B. Fewer rainy days.

    C. More cold weather. D. More exposure to sunlight.

2The underlined word “archived” in the second paragraph means______

    A. composed B. discussed

    C. recorded D. adjusted

3What did the researchers think of the findings of the research?

    A. They were as expected.

    B. They were surprising.

    C. They needed professional proof.

    D. They were not inclusive enough.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To inform readers of a new study.

    B. To tell people a piece of good news.

    C. To introduce a new way to gain happiness.

    D. To explain the benefits of walking in nature.

  • 29、Learning a second language is tricky at any age. Now, in a new study, scientists have worked out the exact age at which your chances of reaching fluency in a second language seem to drop: 10.

The study, published in the journal Cognition, found that it's nearly impossible for language learners to reach native-level fluency if they start learning a second tongue after age 10. But that's not because language skills start to go downhill. "It turns out you're still learning fast, "says study co-author Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology at Boston College. "It's just that you run out of time, because your ability to learn starts dropping at around 17 or 18 years old. People who start a few years after age 10 may still become quite good at a language," the authors say, "but they are unlikely to become fluent." Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. Children's brains are more plastic than those of adults, meaning they're better able to adapt and respond to new information. "All learning involves the brain changing," Hartshorne says, "and children's brains seem to be a lot more skillful at changing. " Kids may also be more willing to try new things and to potentially look foolish in the process than adults are. Their comparatively new grasp on their native tongue may also be advantageous. Unlike adults, who tend to obey the rules and patterns of their first language, kids may be able to approach a new one with a blank page.

These findings might seem discouraging, but it was heartening for scientists to learn that   the critical(关键的) period for fluent language acquisition might be longer than previously thought. Some scientists believed that the window began to close shortly after birth, while others extended it to early adolescence. Compared with those estimates (评估), age 17 or 18 — when language-learning ability starts to drop off—may seem relatively old.

【1】What is the best period to learn a second language?

    A.Before ten.

    B.Early adolescence.

    C.Age fifteen.

    D.Age seventeen or eighteen.

【2】When it comes to new things, what does the writer think of kids compared with adults?

    A.They're less skillful.

    B.They're less interested.

    C.They're more flexible.

    D.They're more stubborn.

【3】What does the underlined word "window" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Interest.

    B.Chance.

    C.Confidence.

    D.Motivation.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.It's Never Too late to Learn a Second Language.

B.It Takes Time to Be Good at a Second Language.

C.Do We Really Need to Learn Foreign Languages?

D.Why Kids Learn Languages More Easily than Adults.

  • 33、Aquaculture—or sea farming, as it is sometimes called—is one of the brightest hopes for finding an answer to the problem of a world food shortage. Although it may be years before sea farming produces large quantities of food, it is already partially successful. One of its successes is the growing of oyster (牡蛎).

Oyster farming is a big new business on Cape Cod, where large crops of oysters have been harvested. The waters there were famous for delicious oysters until the supply gave out about fifteen years ago. “There’s a whole generation of people who have never eaten oysters,” said Karl Touraine, marketing director of Aqua Dynamics Corporation, a company that grows oysters on nylon strings (尼龙绳) hanging from metal frames (金属架). “For about twenty years the oyster has been in short supply, and our aim is to change this by using new, modern growing techniques,” he explained.

“Wareham, on Cape Cod, is the first place in the US where oysters are being grown on frames just off the bottom of the sea,” said Hank McAvoy of the National Marine Fisheries Service in Gloucester. “But there’s nothing new about off-bottom raising,” Mr. McAvoy adds. “It’s been done successfully in Norway and Australia and, in the last few years, in Spain. The Japanese have used this form of sea farming for years, and they’re the most successful, with a yearly crop of more than 46,000 pounds of shelled oysters an acre.”

The Aqua Dynamics group grows oysters on strings, away from the bottom so that the oysters’ natural enemies cannot reach them. “When an oyster avoid enemies and live in unpolluted water with plenty to eat, he’ll grow fast.” Karl Touraine explains. “Oysters will attach themselves to almost anything they can,” he continues. “At Wareham, we use shells which we tie with nylon strings hanging from metal frames. We lower the strings into the water, leaving at least a foot of water between the lowest shell and the bottom.”

“So far the growth has been excellent and the taste is just delightful,” Mr. Touraine notes happily.

【1】What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?

A.To show the importance of farming.

B.To introduce the topic of oyster farming.

C.To give a brief introduction to aquaculture.

D.To encourage people to save food.

A.is a brand new way in Norway.

B.has failed to spread in Spain.

    C.is popular in many places

D.results in low production in Japan.

【3】What is the advantage of off-bottom oyster farming?

    A.It can improve oysters’ taste.

B.It offers oysters an enemy-free environment.

    C.It greatly reduces water consumption.

    D.It helps control environmental pollution.

【4】What is Karl Touraine’s attitude towards off-bottom raising?

    A.Approving.

    B.Worried.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Unclear.

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”
