27、 The clock always seems to be ticking rather too fast in the doctor’s office and the queue of patients outside the door seems to be pressing rather too hard. Some say it’s high time for the model of short, sharp one-to-one appointments to give way to shared medical appointments (SMAs共享医疗预约).
SMAs are doctor-patient visits in which a group of patients receive patient education and counseling(咨询), physical examination and medical support in a group setting. Typically SMAs are designed to have one or more doctors attend to a group of patients who share a common illness or medical condition. In contrast to one-to-one visits, SMAS provide a longer appointment time-frame as well as the opportunity for patients to have improved access to their physicians and meanwhile pick up additional information and support from peers.
However, doctors who have pioneered the shared appointment approach report that there are significant challenges involved. Dr. Sumego, director of shared medical appointments, Cleveland Clinic, identifies culture change as the most significant challenge. Physicians and nurses are trained in a model of personal service and privacy; the SMA approach is a fundamental challenge to those fixed ideas. They need shared goals and a way of testing the innovation against agreed standards. Dr. Sumego says, “The physicians may be worried about the possible chaos and efficiencies that are marketed. They also have to make the patients understand what their appointment is, and what the expectation is.”
“So, if an organization was looking to start shared medical appointments, I would advise them to start the buy-in from a few champion physicians, develop the work-flow and develop some experience. Provide some support behind what that best practice should look like. Create some standards so that, as the concept spreads, you can employ that experience to start the next shared medical appointments and the next.”
【1】What is the purpose of the SMA approach?
A. To improve medical service. B. To promote doctors’ reputation.
C. To conduct medical research. D. To meet patients’ expectation.
【2】According to Dr. Sumego, what prevents the SMA approach from being widely adopted?
A. Personal service. B. Fixed ideas.
C. Lack of equipment. D. Shared goals.
【3】What can the underlined “buy-in”in Paragraph 4 be replaced by?
A. practice. B. organization.
C. purchase. D. support.
【4】What can be learned about the SMA approach in the last paragraph?
A. It is currently being questioned. B. It is impractical in some areas.
C. It will enjoy wide popularity soon. D. It should be carried out step by step.
28、 When a laptop or smartphone battery starts losing its power, the only options are to buy an expensive replacement or just keep it plugged in all the time. But a woman Mya Le Thai may have found the solution to this problem.
Thai was frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degraded (退化) over time, until they failed to charge fully. She did not like having to keep her laptop connected to an electrical outlet to keep it powered on. So, she decided to do something about that problem. At first, she and her team at UC Irvine thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries to last forever.
Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. Most of these batteries have a lifespan of about 7,000 charging cycles before they die. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires to carry electricity. Nano wires are extremely thin. A human hair is thousands of times thicker, for example. Nano wires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries.
But, Thai had a theory — the nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel (凝胶). She and her team tested this theory. “It was a long process and a lot of work,” Thai said. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA, a type of plastic, was one of them. The nanowires were coated with PMMA and cycled through charging 200,000 times. The PMMA-coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever without losing charging ability.
Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results and she is enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself; but also in technology and energy.”
【1】Why did Mya Le Thai work on lithium-ion batteries?
A.She disliked the batteries for her laptop.
B.Her team were ordered to invent a new battery.
C.Many people thought batteries were too expensive.
D.The batteries would soon fail to get fully charged.
【2】What can we infer about nanowires?
A.They are too weak to carry electricity.
B.They are not suitable to use in batteries.
C.They Iasi exactly 7,000 charging cycles.
D.Their thinness is a cause of batteries degrading.
【3】What was Thai and her team’s breakthrough?
A.Coating nanowires in a gel. B.A new kind of battery.
C.New materials for batteries. D.A new way of charging batteries.
【4】What may be the best title for the passage?
A.Mya Le Thai discovered nanowires B.A woman invents a lasting battery
C.The options of batteries for wireless devices D.The reasons for batteries degrading
29、As the saying goes, “No man is an island.” 【1】If you don’t, you will have a much harder time attracting luck and getting what you want. If you do, you can have more time to do the things you really want or get through a difficult or unpleasant period of time.
【2】 Show your kindness and generosity to them, and they will return the favor. The Law of Reciprocity(互惠) works like a charm. Your mother may have told you many things that fall under this law when you were a kid. For instance, she may have told you that if you wanted friends, you needed to be friendly. Your mother actually was telling you about the Law of Reciprocity without you or her even knowing about it. 【3】 The more you help others gain what they are looking for, the more you will be helped. It may not seem like this is the case on the surface, but you can not give without receiving back.
【4】 Do acts of kindness unconditionally. Don’t demand from others, saying something like, “I have done so many favors for you, and now I want you to return the favor.” 【5】 Just do good things. Even if people don’t remember or appreciate what you have done, the universe will certainly give you the reward that you deserve.
A.So how can you get help from others?
B.Thus you don’t have to take the trouble to do things by yourself.
C.No, that’s not the way.
D.So always depend on people you can trust.
E.In fact, the Law of Reciprocity will help you achieve a lot of success.
F.It’s true that in order to succeed, you have to get help from other people.
G.However, don’t go about being nice expecting something in return.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high【1】 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an【2】 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the【3】 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an【4】 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.
From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?
The answer is yes. The first artwork【5】 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its【6】 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.
Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.
Art is a way in which human 【7】 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 【8】 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain【9】 traits of old master paintings be called art?
For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as【10】. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.
Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.
It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 【1】, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.
Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was 【2】 for the COVID-19 disease after 【3】 a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement.
All of the cats are expected to recover, it said. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after 【4】 to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.
Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger. "This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 【5】 we will all have a better understanding as a result.
While the other tigers and lions were also 【6】 symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and had started to lose her appetite already, and they did not want to 【7】 all the cats to anesthesia(麻醉), Calle said.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 【1】 into the hand?
Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 【2】. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 【3】. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.
The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 【4】 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 【5】 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.
The technology could 【6】 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 【7】 available space.
In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 【8】 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?
According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 【9】. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 【10】 the majority of people.
But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.
Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 【1】 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 【2】.
This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

The Dickensons lived on the eastern coast of America and the three boys, Carl, Simon, and little Ben loved the water. The elder brothers usually helped their dad on his farm and took care of their little brother.
There was an island off shore in the distance. One Saturday the two elder brothers decided to go there for an adventure. When they were leaving, their father said, “Boys, I have to go to town and I want you to take care of Ben. You can carry him together but be careful!” Although they thought Ben was too young to take risks, they still took him.
When the three arrived at the shore, they were lucky to find an old rowboat with oars (桨).Carl and Simon took turns to paddle (划桨)the boat.
Suddenly they noticed the old boat leaking slowly. Carl asked them not to worry and said that they could empty water when they got back. But as the boys neared the island, they struck a rock hidden under the water. It enlarged the hole, more water pouring in. They were glad to be safe on shore!
“How can we get back with the weight of us?” Simon wondered.
Carl answered “You row Ben across, and then come back for me. If we move fast, it won’t sink with only two.” Simon agreed.
The boys started to explore the island. It was flat with many trees. In a couple of hours they had gone all around the island, but when they headed for their boat, they were shocked! Their boat was bumping against trees. The tide was coming in! The island was disappearing!
The boys took a rock and tried to fill it into the hole but they only made it worse because of the old wood. Carl thought a minute “Simon, you take Ben as fast as you can. Then run for the house and see if Dad can come to rescue me. I can climb a tree or something that will give me maybe another hour.” The brothers hugged. Then Carl turned the boat around, helped Ben get in and pushed it as hard as he could toward home

Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now.

An urgent call came into Jim Green’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash — but her wedding ring was inside.
Jim, 42, didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours checking the video tapes from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像机), watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man approached the bench, quickly put something in his pocket, and walked off. Jim posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was,” Jim said.
Within hours, Jim got a text from 17-year-old Peter. Peter admitted to having taken the wallet and told Jim he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Jim, unsure whether he believed Peter, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Peter revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Jim, a father of two, looked closely at Peter — his small height, his ruddy cheeks — and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.
But the risks were high. The police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Peter could be facing a serious crime charge. “I had to help him somehow,” Jim says.
The police wanted Jim to bring the teen down to the station. Instead, Jim called the police and told them, “He’s going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”
Paragraph 1
Jim hired two local divers to search the waters where Peter had thrown the wallet.
