二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A walker seriously injured in a mountaintop lightning strike which killed two others is showing signs of improvement, the police have said. A major rescue operation was performed on Sunday following two strikes which hit the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Two men died, while two others were taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said, “A man in a serious condition in hospital, following simultaneous(同时发生的)incidents in the Brecon Beacons, has now improved and he is recovering. Officers are continuing to get in touch with the next of relatives of the dead men and enquiries are ongoing. All men were believed to be from England.”

Mark Jones,of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, described the lightning strike as a freak accident, and something he had not been called out to in 30 years of service.

The walking group Ramblers Cymru said that while incidents involving thunder and lightning were rare, electrical storms should be taken seriously by walkers.

The organisation's delivery officer, Elly Hannigan Popp, said, “We'd advise everyone to check the weather forecast before starting a walk. If you hear thunder, see lightning or if your hair stands on end, postpone activities even if the sky looks blue and clear. Lightning will strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. Lightning can strike the same place repeatedly—especially tall, pointed, isolated objects.”

“If there is no shelter you should keep moving. And if you become the tallest object, crouch(蹲)in the open twice as far away from the nearest pointed object as it is tall. Make yourself as small as possible, stay on your toes and keep your heels together, as it will allow electricity to go up one foot, through the heels and back into the ground through the other.”

【1】What can we learn about the victims of the incident?

A.Both of the injured men are recovering slowly.

B.The bodies of the two men haven't been found.

C.The four men involved may be from the same country.

D.The police cannot contact the two dead men's relatives.

【2】Why did the author quote the police spokeswoman in Paragraph 2?

A.Because the accident is very serious.

B.To announce where the victims come from.

C.Because the police are looking into the accident.

D.To tell the readers some facts of the incident.

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3?

    A.Unusual.

    B.Regular.

    C.Unimportant.

    D.Frightening.

【4】What do the last two paragraphs tell us?

    A.Harm done by lightning.

    B.Warnings from a delivery officer.

C.First aid in a lightning incident.

D.Safety tips on a lightning strike.

  • 27、   The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phone, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful - both in school and in life.

Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.

Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks -- both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.

In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to know well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.

Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) “those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot (发现) spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct then over time.

“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”

1What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?

A.The absence of blackboard in classroom. B.The lack of practice in handwriting.

C.The use of new technologies in teaching. D.The popular use of smartphones.

    2Berninger’s study published in 2009 ________.

A.discussed the importance of writing speed.

B.indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.

C.found that good essays are made up of long sentences.

D.focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.

3Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?

A.Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.

B.Spelling improves one’s memory of words.

C.Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.

D.Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.

  • 28、Great friendships made over time

What kind of relationship do you think will provide you with more life satisfaction, better health and complete happiness? 1  A familial (家庭的) one? Surprisingly, the answer is friendship.

However, it’s not possible to have true friends without first making regular friends. Have you ever thought about how long it takes to turn an acquaintance (认识的人) into a true friend? 2 According to lead study author Jeffrey Hall, we need to spend at least 80 hours with another person to create a true friendship with them.

3 One group consisted of 429 adults who had recently relocated (搬家), while the other was made up of 112 freshmen from the University of Kansas. The results showed that the more time each person spent together, the faster friendship formed in both groups. But it seemed that Hall wasn’t satisfied with the result. 4 According to the survey, “casual” friends are generally formed after spending about 30 hours together. And people will go from casual friends to regular friends after another 50 hours. However, it takes a lot longer to get really close to someone: A “close” friendship takes about 140 hours to create and “best friends” need about 300 hours.

But spending time together isn’t the only factor (元素) when it comes to making friends. “It’s not so important to just be in the company of someone… 5,”  Since time is precious, Hall suggested taking advantage of our school years by making as many friends as we can.

    A.Watch a movie together ?

B.It matters how you spend the time.

C.Hall surveyed two groups as they began new chapters in their lives.

    D.A romantic relationship?

E.You can engage (参与) in friendly competition by playing video games.

F.A new study published recently might have the answer to that question.

G.He wanted to find out exactly how many hours it takes to form a friendship.

  • 29、   Put an ice cube from your fridge into a glass of water. You have a piece of string(线) 10 centimeters long. The problem is to take out that piece of ice with the help of the string. But you must not touch the ice with your fingers.

You may ask your friends to try to do that when you are having dinner together. There is a saltcellar on the table. You must use salt when you carry out this experiment.

First you put the string across the piece of ice. Then put some salt on the ice. Salt makes ice melt(融化). The ice round the string will begin to melt. But when it melts, it will lose heat. The cold ice cube will make the salt water freeze again.

After a minute or two you may raise the piece of string and with it you will raise your piece of ice!

This experiment can be very useful to you. If, for example, there is ice near the door of your house, you must use very much salt to melt all the ice. If you don’t put enough salt, the water will freeze again.

1We must use _______ when we carry out this experiment.
