  • 26、A scientist locked himself in a small air-tight plastic tent with 200 plants to see if they could change CO2 into oxygen (氧气) fast enough to keep him alive.

Kurtis Baute locked himself in a 3m by 3m tent in his brother’s backyard in British Columbia, Canada. He hoped to find out if by surrounding himself with plants, the CO2 he breathed out could be changed into oxygen to allow him to survive in the locked tent for at least three days. Unfortunately, he had to give up the experiment after only 15 hours, as CO2 levels reached a dangerous point where he risked suffering brain damage.

“I could probably survive in the tent for three days,” Baute wrote on his website. “But my goal is not to just ‘not die’. My goal is to end this project without developing brain damage or just generally causing lasting harm to my body. But as it turns out, that’s exactly what he risked as the 200 plants he took with him into the tent couldn’t meet his needs. Clearly, a cloudy sky prevented them from receiving all the sunlight they needed to perform photosynthesis (光合作用), so they couldn’t recycle CO2 fast enough.

“Plants are great at taking in CO2 and they love it. Since it wasn’t a bright and sunny day, they weren’t getting the light they needed, which meant CO2 just kept rising. I had to give up the experiment as that continued.” the young experimenter said.

15 hours into the experiment, Baute reached the set danger point and then ended this experiment. Still, he called the experiment a “huge success” as his main goal was actually the terrible effects of climate change and CO2 emissions. “The conclusion about my experiment is that if CO2 is too high, I’ll escape, which is just everyday experiences for many people on this planet. Everyone deserves clean air, but not everyone has it,” he wrote.

【1】Why did Kurtis Baute stay in the tent for only 15 hours?

A.The tent is too small for him to stay too long.

B.The environment in the tent is dangerous for him.

C.CO2 in the tent couldn’t be changed into oxygen.

D.He couldn’t survive in the locked tent any longer.

【2】What made it hard for the 200 plants to satisfy Kurtis Baute’s needs?

    A.His health condition.

    B.His wrong decision.

    C.Too much CO2.

    D.The cloudy weather.

【3】What does Kurtis think of the result of the experiment?

    A.Disappointing.

    B.Surprising.

    C.Satisfying.

    D.Interesting.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.A test to show the importance of clean air

    B.Surviving in the tent

    C.The set danger point

D.Making people know the use of plants

  • 28、   My brother Stanley died last January from cancerand I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months. I witnessed the care he received andat the timeI thought it was poor. It shocked and hurt me.

While Stanley was sickI was a medical student. I therefore put a lot of time and energy in the medical profession. It gave me an insider's view of the care Stanley receivedwhen most people spending time with a very sick loved one only have an outside view. Howeveras I see now it made me judge the care that his doctors and nurses gave him too harshly(严厉的).

We experienced long waits in emergency departmentsand doctors were unsure of the details of Stanley's case. We waited around for doctors to arrivebut they seldom turned up. But worst of all was Stanley's senior doctor. Near the endhe announced coldly that there was nothing left to try. “All the choices have been used"he said. And with thathe leftnever to be seen again.

All this affected the way I thought about my studies. Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chartAfter Stanley diedI finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of students in my year. They went on to get jobs in hospitalswhile I took a year out. I simply couldn't face working in medicine.

FinallyI applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myselfand I often had to tell patients bad news. It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a serious illness. I also found that I couldn't always answer patients' questions. They would want to know whether they could be curedor how long they would livebut it wasn't always possible to say.

It was then that I understood what difficult job health providers do. It made me think back to my experiences with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick. Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism(不专业)or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.

I began to see my patients as Stanleyand myself no longer as his sisterbut one of his caregivers.

Now I was in their shoes-the people who spend every day caring for others.

I still miss Stanley horriblybut at least now the anger has gone.

  • 29、   Wolf Warrior 2 (《战狼II), a movie that made box office history in China in 2017, tells the story of how the Chinese government successfully rescues overseas Chinese citizens in Africa.

At the end of the film, there is one line that stands out: “When you meet with danger in a foreign land, do not give up! Please remember, at your back stands a strong motherland.”

The movie sends the message that overseas Chinese will always receive timely help from China. But in the future, some headstrong(任性的) citizens will not get this help for free, People’s Daily reported.

On March 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affaires (MFA) worked out a draft for regulations on consular (领事的) protection and assistance, the Xinhua News Agency reported. The draft says that those who insist on travelling to dangerous places without considering warnings given by the MFA will not be able to take advantage of free rescue services.

For example, the MFA recently release a travel advisory (安全提醒) saying that Chinese citizens should avoid travelling to Maldives. Chinese who travel there and run into trouble may still ask for aid from the Chinese Embassy. But they will have to cover the cost of their rescue later.

In fact, this is a common international practice, People’s Daily said. Countries like the US, the UK and Canada have similar regulations.

According to the MFA, over 130 million Chinese mainlanders travelled overseas in 2017. The MFA issued over1000 travel advisories to advise Chinese citizens of the risks they may face when travelling.

1Why does the author quote a line from Wolf Warrior 2 ?

    A. To explain what the movie is about.

    B. To describe the feelings after watching the movie.

    C. To stress that China will help every Chinese person.

    D. To prove how strong China is.

2Who usually gives warnings about travelling abroad?

    A. People’s Daily B. The MFA

    C. Xinhua News Agency D. Travel agencies.

    3The draft suggests that ______.

    A. Chinese people can’t travel to foreign places

    B. Free rescue services have come to an end

    C. Chinese who travel to Maldives will run into trouble

    D. People will not get free help if they ignore the MFA’s warnings

4If the regulation is put into practice, we can infer that _____.

    A. China will be the first country in the world to do so

    B. People may have second thoughts about travelling to dangerous places

    C. The number of people who can travel overseas will be less than 130 million

    D. Only rich people will be able to afford to travel overseas
