  • 27、   Why do some people enjoy more health and happiness than others? It seems that they are able to realize their dreams rapidly. The good news is that you can be one of those people. 1 Now consider the following habits of exceptionally happy people from my book Find Your Happy.

Make themselves available to success. Happy people are great goal setters. 2

This allows them to stand out in different areas of their life. Ask yourself if you are open for opportunities and setting big goals.

Don't use the word luck. When you look at an exceptionally happy person, you may say, "They are so lucky." But a conversation with them will reveal that luck is not in their vocabulary. Instead, they believe that passion and persistence (坚持不懈) equals great results.

3 Exceptionally happy people are busy making their goals come true. They understand that spending time arguing with others takes them away from what they care about most. They love hearing people talk about their views, but happy people won't spend time trying to convince you to adopt their beliefs.

Walk out of their comfort zone and seek risk often. 4 So they ask for adventure and satisfaction through seeking new experiences. They see risk as growth and are happier because they live a life with no regrets.

5 Happy people don't spend a lot of time thinking about happiness. They live in the moment and enjoy the ups and downs of life. Happy people still experience setbacks, but they look at those setbacks as a way to learn more about themselves and to grow. Happiness is not something they seek, as it is a daily practice that never leaves them.

    A. Try to be more patient.

    B. Don't try to make you win over with debates.

    C. Realize there is more to life than being happy.

    D. I know this is true from personal experience.

    E. They work toward their goals daily and see opportunities in everything.

    F. Happy people have learned that settling in any area of life will hold them back.

    G. Happiness is available, especially when you understand what happiness is.

  • 28、Guanmei, a 65-year-old woman of the Dong ethnic group, is the inheritor of the Grand Song of Dong (侗族大歌), a national intangible cultural heritage in China. Her hometown Zaidai Village in Guizhou, southwestern China, is home to the Grand Song of the Dong ethnic group.

The Grand Song of Dong dates from more than 2,500 years ago. The way Dong singers use their vocal cords (声带) is different from how formally trained singers do. It is a folk chorus with multi-parts, no conductor, and no accompaniment. Organically growing from their natural surroundings, it is recognized internationally as “the sound of Nature.”

Before the Dong people had a writing system in 1958, the Dong culture, their history and stories were all recorded by means of songs. As a Dong saying goes, “Rice feeds the body and songs enrich the soul”. The Dong people sing right from their childhood. While not singing, they all work in their rice field.

Guanmei has been singing the Grand Song of Dong all her life, making her a famous singing teacher in her hometown and nearby areas. “The songs are our means of passing on wisdom, knowledge and life experiences to others. I will not exist in this world 100 years later, but Grand songs will. I’m honored to do this job, ” Guanmei said.

Kind-hearted, Guanmei has been volunteering to teach the Grand Song of Dong to the Dong children for over 30 years. Now she has more than 300 students. Guanmei is pleased to see the village children come to her house willingly when they have free time.

“Nowadays, more and more young people leave the village and settle in cities. Decades later, the Dong children out of the village might know nothing about Grand songs. We should do something just now. It’s our mission. What is once lost might be lost forever,” added Guanmei.

【1】What makes the Grand Song of Dong known as “the sound of Nature”?

    A.The outstanding conductor.

    B.The special musical instrument.

    C.The attractive natural environment.

    D.The inspiration from nature.

【2】What can we know about the Dong ethnic culture?

    A.The Dong singers are professionals.

B.The Dong culture before 1958 has been largely lost.

C.Singing is of vital importance to the Dong people.

D.They have a written language with a history of over 2,500 years.

【3】How does Guanmei feel about the future of Grand songs?

    A.Concerned.

    B.Sympathetic.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Satisfied.

【4】What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To call on young people to return to the Dong village.

B.To guide the Dong children to learn the Grand Song of Dong.

C.To show a woman’s efforts to keep the Dong culture alive.

D.To instruct people to appreciate the Grand Song of Dong.

  • 29、   What will the schools of the future look like? With the introduction of 5G technology, we’re starting to find out.

The answer is smart campuses, with high-tech features to help students learn more effectively and safely. They also bring convenience to teachers and administrators (管理者).

The University of British Columbia has what is believed to be Canada’s first 5G-powered smart campus, according to The Star newspaper. The school has partnered with tech company Rogers Communications to install (安装) a massive 5G network on its campus. Researchers at the school can use the network to test real-time 5G applications, as well as access a data storage facility (设施) similar to “cloud” storage, the newspaper noted.

US tech company Amazon is also looking to get into the smart campus arena (舞台). Alexa, the company’s voice-activated (声控) smart assistant, is being aimed at teachers. They may help to run classes more efficiently, says Amazon. For example, if a teacher has to teach different classes in different rooms, Alexa can remember the teacher’s preferences, such as whether or not they need to use a projector (投影仪).

Smart technology can also be used to keep students and teachers safe. At the Global Indian International School in Singapore, CNET reports that facial recognition scanners (扫描器) allow teachers to automatically lock or unlock classroom doors, while students can store their textbooks in smart lockers linked to their student ID cards.

People often describe college campuses as “mini-cities”. After all, they have their own on-campus infrastructure (基础设施), including transport links, roads, shops, restaurants – even police. And just like the smart cities being designed around the world, many college campuses are adopting smart technology. The University of Michigan in the US, for example, has its own self-driving shuttle (班车) system, allowing students to go from classroom to classroom in a safe and efficient manner.

Unlike cities, universities are seen as a particularly good testing ground for smart technology because many of them have sole (单一的) control over their property (财产). “Cities are so big, and there are so many players and stakeholders (利益相关者), it can be difficult. But many universities around the world have control over their estates (房产). They own all their buildings ... so they can become like a living lab,” said Gemmy Ginty, a designer working on a smart campus development strategy for the University of Glasgow, UK, in a news report by the Guardian.

1How is the text mainly developed?

A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By following the order of time. D.By explaining causes and effects.

2What can we learn about Alexa from the text?

A.It offers free “cloud” storage to its users.

B.It is used to test real-time 5G applications.

C.It can help improve classroom efficiency.

D.It can help monitor students’ class performances.

3Why are universities seen as a good testing grounds for smart technology, according to the text?

A.Smart technology benefits students the most.

B.Universities are full of laboratories and researchers.

C.Sole control over their properties makes it easier to test new tech.

D.There are many players and stakeholders on university campuses.
