二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Like their ancient toga-wearing counterparts, modern philosophers continue to disagree on the nature of freewill. Do we really have any control over the choices we make and the things we desire, and if so, to what degree?

Theories of freewill vary, but the ancient words of Plato still line up with our modern perceptions(概念) of temptation and willpower. The respected Greek philosopher argued that the human experience is one of constant struggle between the intellect and the body, between rationality and desire. Along these lines, true freedom is only achievable when willpower unchains us from bodily, emotional, instinctual slavery.

You can find similar thoughts throughout world religions, most of which offer a particular and often difficult path to rise above our darker natures.

And science? Well, science mostly agrees with all of this. Willpower is all about overcoming your natural desires to eat cupcakes, skip your morning workout, play games on mobile phone, hit the snooze alarm and check your e-mail during a funeral.

Your willpower, however, is limited. If life were a video game, you'd see a glowing "willpower" or "ego"(自我) meter at the top of the screen next to your "life" meter. Successfully resist one temptation, and the meter drains a little. The next temptation drains the "willpower" meter even more, until there's nothing left at all.

Our modern scientific understanding of willpower in large part stems from a 1996 research experiment involving chocolate and radishes(小红萝卜). Psychologist Roy Baumeister led a study in which 67 test subjects were presented with tempting chocolate chip cookies and other chocolate-flavored treats before a persistence-testing puzzle. Here's the catch: The researchers asked some of the participants to withdraw from sweets and snack on radishes instead.

Baumeister's results told a fascinating story. The test subjects who resisted the sweet stuff in favor of radishes performed poorly on the persistence test. They simply didn't have the willpower left to resist slacking off(松懈).

The research inspired more than a thousand additional studies discussing everything from the influence of positive messages to the ego-sapping power of daily decisions.

Studies also show that cognitive capacity also affects our ability to hold out against temptation. Cognitive capacity is essentially your working memory, which you employ when resisting a temptation ... or holding a string of numbers in your head. A 1999 study from the University of Iowa professor Baba Shiv found that people tasked with remembering a two-digit number held out better than people remembering a seven-digit number when tempted with chocolate cake.

1What do you understand by ‘freewill’?

A.The control we have over the choices.

B.The choices we make and the things we desire.

C.The choices that philosophers force us to make.

    D.Our perception of temptation.

2According to Plato, when is true freedom available?

A.Willpower to realize one’s own ego. B.Our ability to overcome temptation.

C.Our ability to remember things. D.The desire to give in to temptation.

3What is meant by ‘cognitive capacity’?

A.When there is a struggle between the intellect and the body.

B.When our willpower helps us to overcome our basic instincts.

C.When we desire that which we cannot achieve.

D.When we have no control over our ego.

  • 27、   Leap days(闰日)play an important role in keeping our calendars on track. It's all thanks to Julius Caesar.

Most years, the calendar is made up of 365 days. However, the Earth's turning around the sun is actually a little longer than that. It's about 365 1/4 days. This makes the calendar year a bit shorter than a solar year. If you're trying to set up an exact system for measuring the passing of time and changing seasons, this throws small trouble in the work. That was back in 46 B. C. when Julius Caesar was developing what came to be known as the Julian Calendar. He decided that every four years an extra day would be added to the calendar on the advice of an astronomer, Sosigenes.

At first, Caesar's way seems simple and direct. You “bank” those extra quarter days for a few years, and then spend them on a leap day. But as the centuries went on, people began to notice something was wrong—it was speeding ahead of the solar year. By the end of the 16th century, the calendar year had been as much as 10 days ahead. The solar year is actually a little shorter than Caesar and Sosigenes thought. “It's not exactly a quarter of an extra day. It's a little less,” says physicist Judah Levine. “So adding one day every four years was too much.”

Astronomers now know that a solar year is actually 365. 24219 days long. This may not seem like much under the Julian Calendar, but that little mistake led to about 11 minutes off a year. So in 1582, Pope Gregory decided to reset the calendar. He came up with something called “the century rule”. If the number of years is a multiple(倍数)of 100 and is divisible(可整除的)by 400, and if the number of years is not a multiple of 100 and is divisible by 4, an extra day is added. Pope Gregory was also responsible for setting leap day as February 29.

The calendar won't skip(跳跃)another leap year until 2100. That little setup has kept our calendars fairly accurate(精确的)for over 400 years.

【1】Who first came up with the idea of leap days?

    A.Sosigenes.

    B.Julius Caesar.

    C.Pope Gregory.

    D.Judah Levine.

【2】What is the purpose of setting up leap days?

A.To add one extra day to every year.

B.To make the Julian Calendar unique.

C.To teach people a method of saving time.

D.To make the calendar year equal to the solar year.

【3】What's wrong with the Julian Calendar?

A.It couldn't direct people in actual life.

B.It didn't completely agree with the solar year.

C.The calendar year was late more than 10 days.

D.It's not enough to add a leap day every 4 years.

【4】What year is a leap year?

    A.1900.

    B.1986.

    C.2024.

    D.2038.

  • 29、   US cosmologist (宇宙学家) Carl Sagan once said: “Across the sea of space, the stars are other suns.”

For centuries, human beings have dreamed of traveling into space, orbiting (围绕......运行) our little blue planet, and appreciating incredible views of sunrises and sunsets. And soon, it seems that our dream will finally come true, as US startup Orion Span announced on April 6 that it planned to launch the first hotel in space in 2021. It will be ready to welcome guests the following year.

The space hotel, Aurora Station, will orbit 320 kilometers above Earth, circling it every 90 minutes. It’s capable of housing two crew members and four guests. The crew members will likely be former NASA astronauts who worked on the International Space Station. However, there’s a catch: Each guest must pay at least $9.5 million (60 million yuan) for a 12-day stay at the hotel.

Once aboard the Aurora Station, guests will find many exciting things to do. According to Orion Span, guests can enjoy the excitement of zero-gravity as they fly throughout the space hotel. They can watch 16 sunrises and sunsets every day and view the northern and southern auroras (极光) through the many windows. They can take part in research experiments like growing food, and even take it home as a souvenir. And they can stay in touch with their families and friends via a high-speed internet connection.

But most importantly, the trip will offer a real sense of what it’s like to live in space. “The premise (前提) of Aurora Station is for guests to live, feel, and [breathe] what it’s like to be an astronaut,” Frank Bunger, founder of Orion Span, told the Robb Report. “The food and drinks are freeze-dried products. It’s not going to be five-star dining … Fire and gas don’t work the same way in space as they do on Earth.”

To better prepare guests for space travel, the company will require a health screening and provide a three-month training program that helps guests understand basic spaceflight, orbital mechanics (轨道力学) and life in the pressurized environment of space.

Some may have doubts about the project, but the company even has plans to turn part of Aurora Station into private apartments. “Future Aurora owners can live in, visit, or sublease (转租) their space [apartment],” Bunger said in a news release. “This is an exciting frontier (待开发的领域) and Orion Span is proud to pave the way.”

1What can we learn about Aurora Station?

A.It will be open to guests in 2021. B.It can only serve four guests at a time.

C.It costs every guest $9.5 million a week. D.It will invite NASA to train the guests.

2What can guests do on Aurora Station?

A.View beautiful auroras. B.Fly outside the space hotel.

    C.Buy various souvenirs. D.Enjoy five-star meals.

3According to Bunger, what is the main purpose of Aurora Station?

A.To help people learn more about space.

B.To offer comfortable space travel experiences.

C.To provide real experiences of living in space.

D.To prepare people for future space exploration.

4What can be inferred about Aurora Station from the last two paragraphs?

A.It’s ready for guests to book their first trip.

B.Few people are optimistic about its future.

C.Its guests must have a basic knowledge of space travel.

D.Private apartments are the most popular choice among its guests.
