24、 Alex Winter is a rock climber. He spoke to Craig Jackson from Out and About magazine.
Imagine hanging on a rock face, with nothing between you and the ground hundreds of metres below. For Alex Winter this is just another normal day. I called him at his home in Fresno, California.
Craig: When did you first become interested in rock climbing?
Alex: Well, Fresno’s not far from Yosemite National Park in California. That’s one of the best places for climbing in the world. Both my parents love rock climbing and I started learning the basics at a very early age.
Craig: What advice would you give people who want to start rock climbing?
Alex: The best way to learn how to climb is to do it. You can’t learn climbing just from books. Practice on easy low climbs first, until you know the right moves. You need a good teacher. For me, that was my parents. And always use good quality equipment(装备). Your life depends on it. Probably the most important piece of equipment is the ropes. You really don’t want them to break!
Craig: Have you ever had any accident?
Alex: I’ve had a few falls, but the ropes have saved my life every time. If you lose your hold, the ropes are connected to the rock and they take your weight.
Craig: For you, what’s the best thing about rock climbing?
Alex: When I’m climbing I forget everything else in the world. The only thing that matters is my next move up the rock face.

25、 The term “multitasking” was firstly used to describe a computer’s ability to do several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. Although checking e-mails while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, multitasking can sometimes make us less productive(富有成效的), rather than more. Studies show that too much multitasking may bring anxiety and memory loss.
In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex(前额叶脑皮层). A research from volunteers performing multiple tasks shows that as they move from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you’ve ever dialed(拨电话) a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you dialed when the line is answered. What probably happened is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind moved to another thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. The research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency(效率) drops while multitasking, compared to when they perform only one task at a time.
Multitasking is easy when at least one of the tasks requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are tried at the same time, people sometimes make mistakes.
We often don’t remember things as well when we’re trying to manage several details at the same time. We may not notice new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory. That is one of the main reasons we forget people’s names – even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect(影响) our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may appear absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss key information being passed on to them.
【1】Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “anxiety”?
A.Stress B.Development C.Death D.Confidence
【2】The writing purpose of this passage is to________.
A.describe the problems of multitasking B.discover the secrets of multitasking
C.tell the stories about multitasking D.explain the importance of multitasking
【3】What can we learn about multitasking?
A.It is a way of life and the only key to success. B.It can be done easily by smart people.
C.It helps build a better relationship between friends. D.It has a close connection to our brain.
【4】What can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A.Multitasking helps people remember things better.
B.More mistakes are made when tasks require little thought.
C.People get low job efficiency while managing several details at the same time.
D.People forgetting who to dial need to have a good rest.
26、Steve Jobs, the founder and former CEO of Apple, died in 2011 at the age of 56. Jobs had been fighting cancer since 2004.
Even as a young man, Jobs was never one who followed the rules. He dropped out of college after only six months. He quit his first job to backpack around India. Jobs says that those early experiences made him creative. They opened up his mind and helped to create Apple’s “think different” spirit.
As a successful businessman, Steve’s passion and energy encouraged the world. He told us to “do what you love”. He believed “ People with passion can change the world for the better.” He made computers fun and interesting. His iPhone, iPad and iTouch are popular around the world. People say Jobs sells dreams, not products.
Jobs taught us how to face failure. He was fired by the successor he himself chose. Despite this, Jobs didn’t hide away. He picked himself up and continued to follow his passion.
Another valuable lesson he taught us was to listen to that voice in the back of your head – the voice that tells you if you’re on the right track or not. Most of us simply decide that we’re going to work in finance or become a doctor because our parents tell us this is what we should do. But Jobs believed and showed that it is wise to listen to that voice in your head, whatever it is telling you to do.
As Barack Obama said, Steve was “brave enough to think differently, brave enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.”
【1】How many years had Steve Jobs been fighting the disease?
A. For 56 years. B. For 24 years. C. For 12 years. D. For 7 years.
【2】What did young Steve do?
A. He finished his college. B. His first job was to travel around India.
C. He created Apple after leaving school. D. He never followed the rules.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. To do what your parents tell you. B. To work in finance or become a doctor.
C. To do what you should do. D. To follow your heart.
【4】What can we learn from Steve Jobs?
A. If you want to succeed, try to drop out of the college.
B. Believe that working hard is more important.
C. Be brave enough to follow your heart.
D. What your parents tell you is always wrong.
27、 Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes. So in 2007, the city began a scheme(计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme(bicycle freedom), people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only 1 euro a day or 29 euros a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kilograms). They are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 metro stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this — not even in France. Many years ago, Lyon started a free bicycle scheme. However, not everybody in Paris thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle; they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all of our traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. We know this is partly because rainforests are disappearing, but it’s also because there’s so much pollution in the world. We can help improve the situation right here. The Velib bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
“There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities,” the spokesman added. “But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise. The problems in our environment will only get worse.”
【1】How did Paris improve the situation of its traffic problem?
A.It built many bicycle stations. B.It is renting heavy bicycles to visitors.
C.It sold more bicycles to people. D.It is providing shared bikes for people.
【2】How much will you have to pay if you use the bike for 45 minutes?
A.29 euros. B.1.5 euros. C.1 euro. D.Nothing.
【3】According to the city spokesman, which of the following statements is true?
A.Traffic is not the only cause of global warming.
B.There aren’t any solutions to the city’s traffic problems.
C.Riding bikes is a perfect way to solve pollution problems.
D.It’s better to drive a car than to ride a bike to travel across the city.
【4】What of the following is NOT a way to deal with global warming?
A.Using bicycles often. B.Protecting the rainforests.
C.Reducing factory fumes. D.Traveling across a city by car.
【5】Which of the following may be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Traffic Jams in Paris B.Taking Action for the Environment
C.Bicycles and the Future D.The Advantages of the Velib Scheme
